Protecting ourselves from mechanical and electrical injury follow the Instructions.

Electrical Operations - Safety Check List to work on HV Equipment 6.6kV/11kV/132kV & above:Dos

Take permit to Work for attending to HV Equipment handling. Licensed Supervisor approval of work plans is required for HV Equipment handling. For work on de-energized / energized high voltage equipment, at least two persons are required.

Before starting work on a de-energized high voltage circuit, place warning signs, Danger Board/ Men at work or tags on the control switches where the operation of such switches would create a hazard.

Twice or thrice ensure which HV Equipment which is under maintenance or needed to be attended is isolated from Power circuit.

Ensure which you want to discharge whether the tag & physical location is matching or not.

Discharge the de-energized high voltage circuit with HT FRP discharge kit suitable for that HV system by ensuring the following things: -

Ensure before Wear HT gloves, Wear rubber bottom shoes or sneakers. An insulated floor is better than metal or bare concrete but this may be outside of your control. A rubber mat should be an acceptable substitute but a carpet, not matter how thick, may not be a particularly good insulator,

Wear eye protection - large plastic lenses eyeglasses or safety goggles. Always keep one hand in your pocket when anywhere around a powered line-connected or high voltage system.

Set up your work area away from possible grounds that you may accidentally contact. Have a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires readily accessible in a location that won't get blocked should something burst into flames. Person should know the operation of fire extinguisher.

Training to the personnel is required prior to work with live line tools and should also know how to do artificial respiration.

Inspect each tool or piece of equipment used as safety devices for high voltage work. Only use equipment in good condition.

Remove all Earth switches which are kept for maintenance/ attending work on HV Equipment after completion of work.

Release the Work permit after completion of work. Ensure no men in contact with the HV Equipment and should be away from HV Equipment before the HV Equipment is energized.

Identify and note in Log book any abnormality found in HV Equipment after Energizing. Check and note in Log book whether the parameters are in normal operating conditions after HV Equipment Energizisation.

Donts

Confused mind, in hurry, ill health and also in dark persons should not handle work on HV Equipment.

Don't wear any jewelry or other articles that could accidentally contact circuitry and conduct current, or get caught in moving parts.

As per IE rules Handling of electric supply lines and apparatus:Before any conductor or apparatus is handled adequate precautions shall be taken, by earthing or other suitable means, to discharge electrically such conductor or apparatus, and any adjacent conductor or apparatus if there is danger there from, and to prevent any conductor or apparatus from being accidentally or inadvertently electrically charged when persons are working thereon.

Every person who is working on an electric supply line or apparatus or both shall be provided with tools and devices such as HT gloves, rubber shoes, standing on rubber mat, safety belts, ladders, earthing devices, helmets, line testers, hand lines and the like for protecting him from mechanical and electrical injury. Such tools and devices shall always be maintained in sound and efficient working conditions.
