Fearing violence, anxious governments across Asia on Thursday stepped up security outside United States embassies following an attack on the American consulate in Libya that killed the US ambassador and three other Americans. In Manila, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) pledged security for foreign embassies and consulates in the country. A year and five months after the fact, President Benigno Aquino signed an order renaming South China Sea waters within the countrys exclusive economic zone (EEZ) West Philippine Sea. TAIWAN-JAPO I

MYANMAR
Although Myanmar has been part of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) scheme since it was set up 20 years ago, it has not really moved ahead in terms of development. Established in 1992, with sponsorship from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the GMS has been an umbrella scheme for regional infrastructure development. The Myanmar delegation attended all GMS meetings, but its projects were rarely implemented in the country because of internal difficulties and international sanctions. Lawmakers across party lines yesterday asked the government of Japan to send a representative to Taiwan to brief the Legislature on the purpose behind the nationalization of three of the Diaoyutai Islands amid an escalating sovereignty row. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will meet religious leaders from many sects to discuss peace building solutions for the Asean region and the restive south next week, the organiser of an international seminar said on Friday. China has issued the first comments attributed to presidentin-waiting Xi Jinping since his disappearance from the public eye over 10 days ago ignited rumours over his health, but there was no public sighting or new photograph of him. President Benigno Aquino returned to Manila on Sunday without meeting Chinese President Hu Jintao for muchanticipated bilateral talks that would have included their countries territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Mr. Aquino attended the 20th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum and leaders summit on Russkiy Island, off the Russian far eastern port city of Vladivostok during the weekend. Hu tells Japan to be aware and not make the 'wrong decision' President Hu Jintao urged the Japanese government on Sunday to realize the seriousness of the tension over the Diaoyu Islands and stop plans for "nationalization", saying Beijing will not recognize the "purchase" of the islands by the Japanese under any circumstances. A senior trade official warned on Thursday that the Japanese government's so-called purchase of the Diaoyu Islands will "inevitably have a negative impact on China-Japan economic and trade ties", while Japanese-funded companies expressed concerns over tensions. Seoul and Tokyo are moving to mend ties strained over historical and territorial disputes as they recognize the growing importance of bilateral cooperation over North Korean threats and other issues of mutual concern. The move comes as the U.S. calls on its key Asian allies to exercise restraint and move toward reconciliation amid its deepened engagement in the strategically vital region.
