The Power to Change Lives

Mission
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS of NYC) is to provide mentors to all children who need caring adult role models--dependable friends who can help expand their horizons, realize their potential and enrich their futures--changing their lives. We seek to train community organizations in every neighborhood, empowering them to establish their own mentoring programs.

Our Programs
Our programs serve 3,500 disadvantaged youth, ages 7-18, in all 5 NYC boroughs. Nearly 100% of those are from low-income, minority households. In 2012, BBBS of NYC engaged close to 7,000 New Yorkers, including children, family members and volunteers, and partnered with 500 schools and approximately 400 corporations.

The Statistics
Mentoring is a powerful and effective tool. Studies find that children enrolled in our programs are more likely to achieve in school, avoid risky behavior, and improve their self-esteem. Statistics show:
90% of Littles improved relationships with their peers 90% of Workplace Mentoring Littles who graduate from high school enrolled in college 91% of Littles increased self-esteem 96% of eligible Littles graduate from high school 96% of Littles are promoted to the next grade After at least 6 months of mentoring, 98% of Littles in the Juvenile Justice Mentoring Program avoid rearrest after incarceration as compared with 47% in NY state After at least 6 months of mentoring, 98% of Littles in the Young Mothers Program avoid a repeat pregnancy, as compared with 80% nationally
