THE LUTHERAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AT PHILADELPHIA

2012 nnual Report of onors

Ltsp.edu/annualreport
F
, let me extend my heartfelt
appreciation for the outstanding support The
Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia
(LTSP) receives from you its graduates, friends,
congregations, synods, and everyone else who sacrifices to
make its mission in education possible. Thank YOU!
The three special stories herein highlighting the
ministries and giving of Romeo Dabee 05; David Rowe
81; and Dick Grove 64, his spouse, Nancy, and our
devoted donor, Irma Wright, are self-explanatory. They
say a great deal about the challenges of ministry today in
different settings, and about what your generosity has
made possible in the preparation of our graduates and the
difference they are making.
As I read about Romeos diligent pastoral ministry to
the scurrying passengers and busy employees at JFK
Airport, regarded as a global gateway with its 42-million
travelers each year, I couldnt help thinking that the
seminary too has served as an international portal, with so
many graduates who have served all over the world. Our
new Dean, Dr. J. Jayakiran Sebastian, brings rich
international experience to his post, succeeding Dr. J. Paul
Rajashekar, who has served so well in that capacity and
who decided to step down to pursue teaching and other
interests on our campus. On another international note:
This fall, for the first time, we will have a field worker
assigned to Seamens Church Institute of Philadelphia and
South Jersey. Second-year seminarian Kat Steinly of
Sellersville will visit ships, extending Christs love to
seafarers from around the world in 201213.
The story of the ministry of the Rev. David Rowe in
Oley, Pennsylvania, reminds us once more of how many of
our graduates are engaged in just plain solid ministry despite
many challenges. Thanks to those of you who are graduates
and professional ministry friends who minister valiantly in
often unheralded circumstances! We thank God for
entrusting the development of such leaders to us, and for the
proclamation they give to the faith by how they lead. Pr.
Rowes daughter, the Rev. Becky Resch, was one of our first
scholars in the Theological Education with Youth (TEY)
program. Her dad tells us that several weeks after her TEY
summer was completed, she told her family that she had
decided to pursue pastoral ministry. She went on to attend
LTSP and now serves as an associate pastor at Abiding
Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing Township, New Jersey.
Thanks to Irma Wrights devotion and the devotion of
others, the Dr. Grover C. and Irma S. Wright Scholarship
Fund to benefit African American students at LTSP
continues to grow. A story in this report highlights that
much of the most recent growth is due to a $13,000 gift
made to the Fund by the Rev. P. Richard Grove, 64, and
his wife Nancy. Dick and Nancy have also contributed
regular scholarship assistance to help seminarians with
children to better afford their training. Thanks to Dick,
Nancy, and so many of you who have given to support the
many aspects of LTSP.
It once was the case that, with the support LTSP
received from the national church combined with
support from its partner synods, there was, frankly, little
need for raising significant amounts of money from our
constituents. The seminary had a modest endowment and
that, along with church support, made it possible not to
charge our students tuition and keep other costs very low.
Some even claimed the seminary had lots of money. That
was then! That is not the case now!
PRESIDENT
From the
Today, the seminary is facing stiff financial
challenges in these difficult economic times.
We are not alone. Many leaders in our
congregations, synods, and denominational
offices, as well as executives for many non-profit
organizations AND in the households we visit,
exchange the same lament with us. Our staff
and faculty know personally about hardships
imposed by these times, as I am sure you do too.
We give deep thanks to our staff and faculty for
their dedication in such times. Almost everyone
knows someone who has been laid off,
downsized, or who remains chronically
unemployed. Dave Rowe speaks of such
hardships in the story of his ministry in Oley.
Still, through our faith we continue to know a
God of love and hope in the midst of trials.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America and our partner synods once were in a
position to provide financial support sufficient
to cover most of the seminarys budgetary
needs, which in turn meant that our graduates
usually left seminary with no educational debt.
Today, these partners furnish the seminary
only 15 percent of its budgetary costs. Most of
our students today enter seminary with
significant debt incurred during their
undergraduate studies, and are willing in many
instances to take on more. Donors like you,
Dick and Nancy Grove, and Dave Rowe do
much by their gifts to help to support our
students, as you will read. Still, despite our best
intentions for furnishing student financial aid,
we cannot do as much as we want in these
tough times. Consequently, many of our
students graduate with significant debt, even
though our tuition does not rival that of so
many graduate schools. In addition, our
wonderful students, who have sacrificed so
much in order to serve our Lord, simply will
not leave seminary with the earning power of
many other graduate students entering the
marketplace. The sad reality is that some of
todays seminary graduates may spend most if
not all of their careers paying down their debt.
Finally, delivering the kind of quality
education our students deserve is just plain
expensive today. We desperately needed The
Brossman Learning Center so many of you
helped make possible. Before Brossman we
had no classroom building! Another example
of costs: Todays seminarians come to our
school expecting the same kind of technology
resources they used in their classrooms in
college and often have at home. The cost of
maintaining our technology with the rapidity
of change is taxing on all educational
institutions. Yet many visitors may not see
all that it takes to keep up with improvements
and keep it running smoothly.
We need your gifts to support our
seminarians and help offset the growing costs
of training them effectively making use of such
tools as rapidly changing technology.
We also need you to continue to send us
new students, who we believe will continue to
find valuable leadership roles across the church.
When we send them to your congregations,
be good to them. They have given and will
continue to give much. The church desperately
needs the kind of skilled professional leaders
that you can send us and we can prepare for
these difficult but exciting times.
Meanwhile, we will be pursuing the
strategic goals I wrote about in the last issue of
PS Magazine:
To complete a curriculum revision in
time for the 201314 academic year.
To achieve financial equilibrium,
working with our many partners and
through good stewardship of our
resources.
By 2015, to complete a $10 million
endowment initiative for student
scholarships, endowment growth,
faculty development, and the
renovation of perimeter housing.
To grow the student body to 500
by 2014 by increasing admissions by
20 per year in all programs.
To prepare for the 150th anniversary
of the seminary in 2014 by embracing
the future that God is sending.
With your prayers and with your support
we will get there together.
Philip D.W. Krey
Dear friend,
You are part of a remarkable story.
This is the outline: somewhere in this world a pastor is serving because of you. A leader is guiding a special ministry of care
because of you. A scholar is teaching, a musician is leading a congregation in song, a volunteer is serving food to hungry
people, because of you. There is much more that could be told.
Think of this: those actions are the result of the gifts of many people, including you. You have blessed the work of the
seminary with your encouragement and support, and as a consequence, men and women have been prepared for service in the
church and the world, to lead in the proclamation of the Gospel in word and deed.
This annual report is a way of sending our thanks to you for your support, and we hope it also gives you a sense of the good
that is accomplished through your contributions.
As we send this report the campus has welcomed new and returning students, and we have begun the new academic year.
Many of them are here only because you have helped through your generous gifts to the seminary. The impact of your gift, the
return on your investment, is truly immeasurable.
And so we thank you on behalf of the students and the people they will serve throughout their lives of ministry, because
you are a part of this wonderful work of the Spirit to call and prepare leaders for the church.
Please remember the seminary with generosity in prayer and support, and thank you for being a part of this life-giving story.
In Christ,

Scholarship Fund Enjoys
Growth and a Significant
New Gift
I
rma S. Wright continues to
devote her energies to
growing and sustaining the
scholarship fund in support of
African American Lutheran
students who seek to become
rostered professional leaders in
the church. The fund is housed
at The Lutheran Theological
Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP).
I love young people and try
to encourage them to want to do
something with their life, Irma Wright said. This is the fruits of the things that
[Grover] used to do and now Im the one to keep it moving! Thank God I made
the right decision! Her decision was to donate a sustaining gift of $75,000 to
establish The Dr. Grover C. and Irma S. Wright Scholarship Fund in the fall of
2010. Her extraordinary gift the single largest African American Lutheran gift
to LTSP in its nearly 150 year history was made possible by proceeds from the
dissolution of the Black Lutheran Community Development Corporation
(BLCDC), founded in 1987 by Dr. Grover Wright to provide affordable housing
for single-parent families and support such families to become self-sufficient. The
organization developed several housing units in Philadelphia. Irma Wright carried
on the work of BLCDC after her husbands death in 1997 until the organization
could no longer be sustained.
Today, more than $100,000 has been raised for the fund, according to Yvonne
Lembo, the first recipient of the scholarship in her third year of the Master of
Divinity degree program at LTSP and a philanthropic advisor with the LTSP
Office for Philanthropy who plays a key role in administering and attracting
support for the fund.
Recent fund growth is thanks in part to a $13,000 gift from the Rev. P. Richard
and Nancy Grove of Philadelphia, designed to provide a full scholarship for an
African American seminarian during the 2012-2013 academic year. Grove, a 1964
LTSP graduate, served as pastor at Christ Lutheran Church, 30th and Diamond
Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for several years in the late 1960s. Grove went
on to become coordinator of the Northwest Philadelphia Lutheran Parish, modeled
after a similar collaborative Lutheran Church initiative in Center City. The Groves,
now retired, live in Center City Philadelphia where Richard Grove serves one
afternoon a week as a docent for the National Constitution Center.
Grover and Irma were devoted members of the Christ Church congregation,
Grove recalled. He was a Pullman railroad porter and at the church was a Boy Scout
leader with many young men in the community involved in Scouting. I was really
impressed with his leadership qualities, and so I worked to recruit Grover to become a

community organizer and outreach leader for Christ Church. At the time, he was
beginning to think that his future in railroading was limited, and so was pleased at
the church leadership opportunity. Irma was involved in many activities at the
church, and both were a great support to me as a young pastor. So when the
Scholarship Fund was started, we saw it as a great way to honor the Wrights legacy
by providing financial support to an African American student. For several years,
the Groves have also furnished scholarship aid to assist married seminarians with
children.
Grover Wright went on from his work at 30th and Diamond to become
associate director for leadership development for the Lutheran Church in
Americas Division for Professional Leadership, which was seeking to recruit
talented African Americans to become pastors in the church.
Irma Wright was constantly at his side, also serving as a teacher and mentor
and providing administrative support and advice. In addition to serving as
president of BLCDC, she worked with the Urban League, first as a volunteer and
then as an employed administrator, ordering and keeping track of supplies, and
tracking income and expenses, among other responsibilities. Today, she remains
active as a pivotal member of Christ Church and stays close to the pulse of the
Scholarship Fund, regularly sending handwritten notes of appreciation to donors,
including Dick and Nancy Grove!
The Grover and Irma Wright Scholarship Fund remains open for donations.
The 2012-2013 fundraising goal is to match the Groves $13,000 gift with new
gifts and pledged support for the Fund.

Seminary Alumnus
David Rowe on Serving
the Rural Poor and the
Importance of
Giving to LTSP
T
he Rev. David Rowe, a 1981 LTSP
graduate and pastor of Friedens Lutheran
Church in Oley, Pennsylvania, doesnt
need a lot of prodding to explain why he is a
diligent donor to the seminary.
The seminary provides the most unique
opportunity for people to explore their faith of any
place, he said during an interview in his office in the
small, rural hamlet of Oley, surrounded by farmlands. Outside, the shouts and
laughter of children gathering for Vacation Bible School provided a backdrop. I
started my regular giving to support the (Timothy) Lull Lounge (in The Brossman
Learning Center), and Ive made giving to my seminary [a] part of my tithing.
Rowe has plenty of powerful memories of his seminary education, and said his
training at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is part of
his daily approach to ministry. The seminary gives its students a strong
foundation first-rate teaching of the Bible, solid training in systematic theology,
liturgy and homiletics [preaching], Rowe said. He trots out the names of many
mentoring professors Lull, John H.P. Reumann, Foster McCurley, Richard
Jeske, Robert Bornemann, Lyman Lundeen, Robert Hughes, and Harold Albert.
The seminary cant teach the leaders it trains everything, Rowe said. It is
hard to develop an understanding of stewardship and evangelism outside of the
parish. But seminary gives you the hand tools, the foundation so you can figure out
approaches to that other stuff. The seminarys influence has extended beyond
Rowe in his family. His daughter, Becky, was an early scholar in the Theological
Education with Youth (TEY) program. That TEY summer was a powerful
experience for her, Rowe said. It was several weeks later that she told us she felt a
call to pastoral ministry. Becky went on to seminary and now serves as an
associate pastor at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing Township, New
Jersey. Son Andrew plays the tuba professionally, and has overcome the challenges
of asthma to do so. A Penn State graduate, Andrew is the kitchen manager for a
cafe in State College, Pennsylvania. Pr. Rowes wife, Mary, has served in the area as
a parochial school and child care teacher and now directs a child care program in
nearby Douglassville.
Rowe said he began to think about becoming a pastor during his teen years. He
grew up as part of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Phoenixville and Centennial
Lutheran Church in Kimberton, both in Pennsylvania. As a youth he enjoyed
leadership opportunities in Centennial Church. I had a chance to lead worship, he
recalled. But for a while he thought he had a greater interest in chemistry and physics.
When he entered Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, however, he
continued
T h e L u t h e r a n T h e o l o g i c a l S e m i n a r y a t P h i l a d e l p h i a +,

registered pre-seminary and concentrated on philosophy and religion.
He was positively influenced by Ursinuss campus ministry initiative. Later
it was on to LTSP.
Rowe said worship and education are central to faith formation at
Friedens Church, where he has served as pastor for 18 years. We
emphasize discipleship, he said. We expect and encourage people to
live out their faith in their daily lives. Key staff leadership, including
for an ambitious child care program, comes from Associate in Ministry
Kathy Schaeffer, who has served at Friedens Church for 10 years.
Parishioners have run a food pantry at the church for 16 years, part
of a Reading area hunger outreach by many congregations. This area
can look affluent on the outside, he said. But in recent years he noted
there has been an uptick in pantry use from 40 to 50 families to 70
to 90. Anyone earning 150 percent of the poverty level or less is
eligible for pantry service, he said. The congregation actually has a
loading dock to receive goods for the pantry.
Oley is a beautiful rural community with adjoining, often majestic
rolling farm acreage. Jobs in Oley itself are not plentiful, Rowe said.
There is a trucking company, and the Oley area, comprising the town
and four townships, has its own school district. Residents commute to
King of Prussia and Reading for work, but fewer young children are
being raised in Oley than once was the case. We have our share of low
income people here, Rowe explained. Pantry customers include
seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, and the newly unemployed,
many of whom Rowe has come to know well. Some of these people
have never been unemployed before now, he said. On the morning of
this interview, Rowe had a problem with part of the congregations air
conditioning system. He telephoned a parishioner who might look.
The man has been unemployed, but Rowe learned he has found work
some distance from the church and cant come over. Dont worry
about the church, Rowe said on the phone. Im just grateful you have
found work.
Since Hurricane Andrew devastated Florida in 1992, Friedens has
had an active group of 15 or so folks who use vacation time to engage in
disaster response recovery work. Friedens members are frequently
joined by folks from other local churches.
Our crews go once or twice a year, Rowe said. Crew visits are all
over the map North Dakota; Biloxi, Mississippi; the city of Athens
and elsewhere in Pennsylvania; Florida; and Ohio.
Friedens members also offer leadership to Camp Noah, an initiative
organized by Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Minnesota to support
children in the wake of disasters that have impacted their communities.
Rowe explained LSS has provided his parishioners with key training
and made arrangements for Friedens members to stay in several places
where they have been needed to support the initiative. The camp
builds its program around the story of Noah and the Flood, he said.
They have wonderful teaching and mental health programs. They help
children understand they were not responsible for disasters. Many of
the children and their families have suffered huge losses. They know
people who died and who have moved away. Rowe explained that
Camp Noah is a blessing for volunteers who want to make a difference
but who dont happen to have carpentry or rebuilding skills. Athens, a
town in northern Pennsylvania just south of Binghamton, New York,
has received volunteer help from Friedens in the aftermath of floods
late last summer. About 20 percent of the towns people have moved
away, Rowe explained. They are having a tough time. Such sites of
devastation often quickly drop from the headlines after a natural
disaster, Rowe noted, and people can forget about them. Friedens is
among the congregations trying not to forget.
Rowe encourages churches and leaders in the current climate to do
what they can in the face of painful current events on many levels.
The Sermon on the Mount goads us, he said. For so many today
their work is their identity. We try to help those who are struggling
know their identity is formed by God through Holy Baptism. Our gift
is not in what we do but rather in who we are and what God has done.
We try to walk with them, give them pastoral care, and tell them we
really care about them in this harsh, harsh time. Our hope is not in
what we accomplish but rather in God. The role of each of us in our
assembly at Friedens is to be Gods brother and sister in Christ to
people who are having a hard time.
Rowe said he knows some seminarians come to LTSP without
having had a lot of church experience. They can learn that at
seminary, he said. On the other hand, with a mom who was a church
secretary and a mother-in-law who was a church organist for many
years, I was probably overchurched, he said with a smile.
For those discerning a possible professional church leadership
career, Rowe urges them to taste and try a lot of stuff church,
reading, movies, jobs that have nothing to do with church take what
comes with a sense of adventure. He urges prayer and conversations
about faith in daily life. Many people today are using different styles
and approaches in what they are doing, he said, mentioning the
Internet, and email devotions. In preparation for daily prayers,
Rowe said he reads the newspaper to get a sense of the issues in his
community and around the world. In that practice, he is following the
advice of a theologian he read in seminary, Karl Barth, pastoring and
preaching with a Bible in one hand and newspaper in the other.
A challenge for those of us who experience absolution from
God in our worship is how to share this what God has done for us,
Rowe said. He described the poor he has met in the past year, the newly
unemployed, and people who have lost their homes in a flood and now
have nothing. There are so many faces of despair, and as a total church
we need to do a better job relating to them.

CREATING an

LIFE INCOME and BEUEST GIFTS
Im interested in increasing my income and
helping prepare pastors to serve our church.
My education at LTSP was really important to
me! Ive always wanted to give something back in
thanks for that education, but I need the income
from the investments I have made.
T
he LTSP Office for Philanthropy staff
regularly hear these comments, and
they help to open a conversation which
can result in increased income for you, while
also helping to support the school that helped
prepare you or your pastor for ministry.
The following is an actual example of such an opportunity:
A retired pastor and his spouse had faithfully given modest gifts to the seminary
during his active ministry. In a recent conversation, he recalled his years at the
seminary and how important the foundation he received at Philadelphia was to him
as he served the Lord and his church. His wife had also reflected upon the important
role that seminaries play for everyone who is interested in the future of the church.
The couple was introduced to an easy method of accomplishing their goals. A
Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple exchange of an asset (such as cash, stock, or even
real estate) for regular income for the remainder of both of their lives. In this case, he
was 77 and she was 79. Based on their ages, they could receive a 6.0 percent rate of
return! This was significantly more than they were getting from their CD, so they
decided to make their gift, and by doing so their income actually increased! They also
received some attractive income tax advantages and were pleased that ultimately the
seminary would receive what was left.
The pastor and his wife were delighted because they increased their income
while helping their seminary.
Would you like to know how such a gift might help you achieve your goals?
For information or questions about Charitable Gift Annuities or other planned giving
opportunities, please contact Larry House at 1.800.286.4616, Ext. 6315 or

JFK Airport Chaplain
Romeo Dabees Ministry
Approach:A Calm,
Reassuring Witness for Christ
in a Frantic Enironment
Dabee graduated from LTSP in 2005 and
went on to earn an STM that he says
prepared him well to serve in a vibrant,
international travel hub.
A
t times it can take Romeo Dabee
(pronounced DayBEE), the Protestant
chaplain at New Yorks JFK Airport, an
hour to walk from his parked car outside
Terminal 4 to his office near The Christ for the
World Chapel on the terminals fourth floor.
Recently, as he left the parking lot he found
it necessary to step out in front of a pull truck
bearing a Smarte Carte label. The man had
been driving recklessly and had nearly struck a
passenger crossing the street to enter the
terminal. Dabee wasnt about to ignore the episode as just another New York
manic moment. His clerical garb quickly caught the attention of the driver, who
abruptly stopped. I just gave him a little word. Slow down. Vintage Dabee.
Polished, reserved, calm but insistent. His low voice diffuses rather than escalates
the episode. He makes his point and then moves on.
Just one episode in the fast-paced, confused, turmoil-laden atmosphere that is
JFK International Airport in Jamaica, New York, regarded as Americas Gateway
to the World. Seven terminals and more than 70 airlines (many you probably
never heard of ), 10 square miles of territory, 42 million passengers each year,
everyone on the move and wearing the varied, colorful garbs of a hundred
homelands, chatting in 50 dialects. Thirty thousand or so employees from varied
backgrounds staffing airline desks, ground transportation, cleaning crews, and
cooking enterprises, and performing myriad other tasks visible and less visible to
scurrying travelers. JFK is a whirling, jet-propelled cosmopolis, a United Nations
on wings and wheels.
Everyone here is on a journey, Dabee explained. When you want to be part
of a ministry that serves the globe, this airport is the place to be a testament to the
founders of the Chapel, a place to let Christ be known around the world by
witnessing in one space. The week before, Dabee was a helpful host to orphans
arriving from the Ukraine to spend the summer with prospective adoptive families.
Today, his Jewish Rabbi colleague is welcoming to the airport school children
bound for a summer educational adventure to Tel Aviv. The airport is a unique
animal, more of a community than a congregation, Dabee said. You serve

travelers, strangers you may never see again, and the community of staff
who work in the airport whom you get to know over time.
But wait, back to Dabees commute from the parking lot. After
pausing to enlighten the Smart Carte guy, he encounters a lone traveling
woman steering her luggage down a hallway. She asks him for directions.
When Dabee spots a traveler who appears to be struggling for bearings,
he approaches cheerfully and asks Where are we going today. Do you
need some help? Many are grateful for his interest. Occasionally he is
rebuffed. You cant let that bother you because right around the corner
will be someone else you can assist, Dabee said matter-of-factly.
Hospitality is a crucial aspect of ministry here. I work to assure that
people are somehow not blocked off from ways that are helpful, in a way
that travelers can hear a sane or still voice, that they see a smile that
brings them a sense of comfort and peace in a stressful environment.
Next stop, Mr. Kims dry-cleaning service on the first floor to
exchange greetings with the proprietor. Dabee then says hello to the
currency exchange employees at their station nearby. A little time with
a baggage handler he has come to know. Then he spies a neighbor, Ajay
Dhawan, a native of India who is the Station Manager (director of JFK
operations) for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. (Dhawan is also president
of the Terminal 4 Airline Consortium, which helps airlines relate to the
terminals management and TSA security management.) A quick visit
to Dhawans colorful office, set off by model airplanes and a wall of
photos of celebrities Dhawan has met.
Finally, Dabee arrives at the faith-based oasis that is at the east end
of Terminal 4s fourth floor. Hosts for anyone visiting the oasis include
Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim chaplains who oversee their
respective ministries, but who find ways to connect as well
examples: A Martin Luther King Day observance, a 9/11 remembrance
event, and recent disaster response preparation training featuring
regional police, fire, and emergency management officials, the New
York Port Authority, the National Transportation Safety Board, FBI,
and the Red Cross. The event included training at the Jet Blue
Terminal next door. As chaplains we have been learning about our role
in connection with first responders, Dabee said. While an
international airport in New York City might seem like a terrorist
target, Dabee calmly explained how safe he feels JFK is, with all of its
security. With a smile he noted that air travel is the second safest mode
of transit one can take next to an elevator. Still, he said, we are
working on being better prepared.
Dabee, a 2005 MDiv graduate of The Lutheran Theological
Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP), spent six years as a Lutheran parish
pastor at Our Saviour, Jamaica, and Gloria Dei in New Hyde Park, New
York, before his Conference Dean within the Metropolitan New York
Synod of the ELCA handed him information about the need for a
Protestant Chaplain at JFK, working under the auspices of the Council
of Churches of New York. At first Dabee tabled the idea, but then it
began tugging at me and he pursued and won the post, beginning last
December. During my STM (Master of Sacred Theology) studies at
LTSP I took a course taught by Prof. David Grafton called Children
of Abraham, which focused on Judaism, Christian, and Muslim
traditions. I did not see then that I was being led to a ministry like this
in a place like this where I would be working so closely with an Imam
and a Rabbi. There is also a Roman Catholic priest who serves as a
chaplain along the oasis. Another course that has strengthened his
current approach to ministry was called Sin, Evil, and the Travail of
Christian Theology as taught by former Prof. Stephen Ray.
Dabees chaplaincy seems to know few bounds as he walks the
floors of the many terminals, introducing himself, greeting strangers
and meeting unanticipated needs.
One week after he became chaplain, Dabee was contacted by a
Delta Airlines worker who wondered if he would assist in honoring the
memory of an inflight supervisor at JFK who had succumbed to a
chronic illness. He was obviously a beloved figure to so many, Dabee
said. The funeral, back home with family in Ohio, was not something
many staff here were in a position to attend. So we responded to their
request for a memorial service and held a service that included
preaching, prayer, hymns, psalms, and a eulogy to bring closure to them
for the life of their valued colleague and friend.
A few weeks later, an employee for the New York Port Authority at
the Lincoln Tunnel rang him up. Would Dabee conduct the wedding for
him and his fiance? Both had demanding schedules and no home church.
He is a Baptist from the Carolinas and his future wife is an Anglican from
the Barbados, Dabee explained. They told me our Christ for the World
Chapel would be the perfect setting for us to involve our families and
working colleagues in the wedding. It was a big celebration.
In the Jet Blue Terminal one day, Dabee was chatting with
managers for the airline when a passenger approached him. Are you a
chaplain? the traveler asked. Dabee told him yes. Im traveling to visit
my father who is ill in California. Could you pray for him? His name is
Robert. Dabee assured the man he would pray for his Dad and his
family. Go with God, he said to the man.
On another occasion, a bewildered woman inbound from an
international flight and traveling with two young children was trying to
figure out where in the airport she could possibly connect with her
scheduled flight to Dallas, Texas. Dabee discovered how to route her
and gave her instructions to her plane a couple of terminals away.
Hes befriended an airport employee looking for a second job to
help with family expenses, in part because her position at the airport
does not include benefits. Shes needed a drivers license to qualify for
the job and has had trouble passing the test, he said. Shes needed
someone to encourage her and not get too discouraged, he explained.
Sometimes your ministry here has a spiritual focus, and then there is a
need just to be a presence, to provide comfort and reassurance to the
whole person.
T h e L u t h e r a n T h e o l o g i c a l S e m i n a r y a t P h i l a d e l p h i a ,+
Each Wednesday about noon an announcement goes over the
sound system at the airport inviting travelers and staff who choose to
take a break to a brief worship service.
It lasts only about 12 to 15 minutes, he explained. There is an
opening prayer, Scripture reading, meditation hymn, prayers for the
people, the Lords Prayer, a blessing for those attending and a sending
hymn. His congregation includes passengers between flights and
staff, like baggage handlers, looking for a place of solace, respite, and
comfort in the midst of their hectic schedules. On one occasion a
young man from India who now resides in Ohio engaged Dabee. His
sisters husband died unexpectedly and he was going home for the
funeral. The man explained the service was just what he needed to face
his long trip home.
The chapel at the airport is available for all Christian groups to use.
It receives funds from benevolent donors and aviation businesses that
appreciate it, and donations are always welcome, Dabee said.
Funerals are a big reason why people travel through the airport, he
said. On another occasion a family from Guyana, his homeland, was
traveling for a funeral there. In a sea of faces you can kind of pick out
travelers from the place you are from, he said. When he greeted them
they quickly revealed the reason for their travels. Right there at the
gate I was able to do a blessing right before they got on their flight, he
recalled. Dabee came to the U.S. from Guyana in 2000 to enter
seminary. One year ago he became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Now, Dabee is working on plans for songfests during the Christmas
holidays to greet passengers in JFKs Arrival Hall. Hes also devising
focus groups and plans for 30-minute Bible studies to better serve office
staff and other airport workers.
Dabee, 36, is married to Rozelle Fredrick-Dabee, who teaches
English as a Second Language in the New York City elementary school
system. The couple lives in Queens Village, about a 10-minute
commute from the airport.
What is at the heart of this ministry is to be a presence, to bear
Christ to others in a busy, confusing environment, to bring solace and
rest even for a moment, to give believers a chance to hear Christ
preached, to offer them a word of promise and hope, just when they
need it, Dabee said. For me it is a blessing, an honor to bring Christ to
them that way, to be a part of their journey.

The seminary is proud of the faithful
ministry provided by its graduates.
Pastors and other leaders who
received the foundation for their
ministry at the seminary currently are
proclaiming the Gospel in 46 states
as well as in 12 other countries.
We are grateful for the fine
support by so many graduates, and
invite other graduates to help
continue the ministry which has
prepared them to serve.

The CRITICAL
NEED for
STUDENT
FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE
According to the ELCA Vocation and Education unit, seminary
student indebtedness today averages over $31,000. The Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is committed to
sending students into ministry with the lowest indebtedness
possible. However, this is an increasing challenge.
Funds for financial aid and scholarship support are a key
need for securing the future of LTSP students, the seminary, and
the church. Your outright gifts, as well as planned gifts designated
to enhance the endowment, will help to assure that financial aid
will be there for todays and tomorrows students.
For more information about creating an endowed scholarship fund,
please contact John Puotinen, 1.800.286.4616, ext. 6316 or
jpuotinen@Ltsp.edu.

The seminary is grateful for the
partnership of Lutheran
congregations, congregational
organizations, synods, and the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America which include the seminary
in their stewardship. We also
appreciate the support from others
outside the Lutheran tradition that
recognize the important ministry the
seminary provides to the whole
church.

The ability of LTSP to grow and expand its ministries
and outreach is due in large part to the love, faithfulness,
and commitment of its alumni and friends. The Cloud
of Witness society acknowledges those who have had
the vision to include the church in their estate and
financial planning as well as their annual giving.

Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a new charitable
giving program? They are no longer matching gifts of any kind. Rather,
eligible members are designated Choice Dollars through the Thrivent
Choice program based on their relationship with Thrivent Financial. If you
have Choice Dollars, we invite you to direct them to The Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.
Here are step-by-step instructions on how to designate your funds:
1. Log on to www.thrivent.com.
2. Sign in with your username and password or register for an account.
3. Once you have registered and signed in, select the Thrivent Choice
button, then scroll down and select the Get Started button. If you
are eligible for Choice Dollars, the amount of dollars you have to
direct is displayed in the Thrivent Choice portal below your login.
4. In the middle of the next page, type in Lutheran Theological
Seminary, in the Organization Name box and click search.

GIVING MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Ltsp.edu/give
In a year of economic challenges, LTSP
continued to provide exceptional
educational opportunities to future
leaders of the church. Without your
support, this simply would not have
been possible. Thank you.
In 20122013, LTSP needs your help
again. Unrestricted gifts directly
finance the daily operation of the
seminary and support scholarships for
our students. The greater the income to
the Leadership Fund, the more
scholarships we can award.
Thank you for your continuing
dedication and support for theological
education. Each gift truly makes a
difference, no matter the size. Please
make your annual gift today.
Give online at Ltsp.edu/give, or make
checks payable to: The Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Philadelphia,
