Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani Work Integrated Learning Programmes Division B.S. Process Engineering Programme First Semester 2012-2013 Assignment No. I : PEHC ZC412 : Process Equipment Design : 20%

Q.No.1 a) Discuss the significance of slenderness ratio in equipment design. b) Give the difference between: Grey cast iron and White cast iron. Q.No.2 Derive an expression for the longitudinal stress in a thin cylinder subjected to a uniform internal fluid pressure. Q.No.3 The inside radius of a hydraulic cylinder is 30 cm. Calculate the required thickness is it operates at 500 kg/cm2. The permissible tensile stress of material is 2400 kg/cm2. Q.No.4 A vessel having 1.6 m outside diameter is to operate at a pressure 5 kg/cm2. The permissible stress of the material used for fabrication is 1020 kg/cm2. Welded joint efficiency is 85%. Calculate the thickness required for a cylindrical vessel and a spherical vessel. Take design pressure 10% more than the operating pressure. Q.No.5 Discuss the combined stresses in struts. Q.No.6 A cylindrical pressure vessel 1.8 m in diameter and 6 m in height is subjected to an internal pressure of 8 kg/cm2. Corrosion allowance is 2 mm. If the vessel is fabricated as: Class B Vessel with J = 0.85 Class C vessel with J = 0.5 and J = 0.7 (a) What will be the minimum thickness of the vessel for each class of vessel? (b) If a strip of suitable size is welded all along the longitudinal joint, (joint efficiency = 1.0) what will be the thickness of the vessel and how much percentage saving in the material can be achieved?

Q.No.7 Calculate the thickness of a hemispherical head for a pressure vessel having a design pressure of 10 kg/cm2. Diameter of vessel is 3 m and the permissible stress is 2700 kg/cm2. Welded joint efficiency is 85%. Q.No.8 A self supported conical roof is to be designed for a storage tank of diameter 1.85 m. Minimum plate thickness to be used for fabrication is 6 mm. The slope of the conical roof is limited to 1 in 5. The roof plates at lapped and welded with continuous fillet weld on the top side only. Roof is subjected to a superimposed load of 125 kg/m 2 measured on the horizontal plane in addition to the dead load of roof plates. Density of plate material is 7850 kg/m3. Check by calculation whether 6 mm plate thickness is adequate for self supported roof fabrication. If, not determine the desired plate thickness. Poissons ratio = 0.33, Modulus of elasticity, E = 2 x 106 kg/cm2, Factor of safety is 12. Q.No.9 Calculate the thickness of torispherical head (100-6) and elliptical head (2:1) for a pressure vessel having a design pressure of 7 kg/cm2. Diameter of vessel is 1.5 m and the permissible stress is 1250 kg/cm2. Welded joint efficiency is 85%. Q.No.10 For the uniformly distributed loaded and end supported beam derive
