Solon Shepherds enlistment
with the Air Force from 1948 to
1951 set the stage for the rest of
his working years.
Stationed in Tokyo in the com-
munications department, Shep-
herd frequently saw Gen. Douglas
MacArthur walking around, and
he has pictures to prove it, he
said.
Being in the service, that was
where I got my training, the 82-
year-old said. Since I had been in
communications, I went to West-
ern Union and I applied there.
I got a job right away, he
added. I stayed with them for 32
years.
It worked out fine.
Now residing at the Mt. Laurel
Nursing and Rehabilitation Cen-
ter on Church Road, Shepherd
and 15 more veterans were visited
by the Warriors Watch Riders on
the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 8.
Activities director Maria Gom-
mel, who is a member of the mo-

She posted information about

It was five years following his

Now, Gommels whole family is

Group presented honor coin
Were a bunch of bikers that
cry, she said. We do. We cry.
There is never a time limit to
the events the Warriors Watch at-
tends. They stay, converse and try
to garner smiles.
At the nursing home, several
bikers came together on the
sunny day after rallying at Bob
Evans Restaurant, American
flags in tow.
Another group, A Heros Wel-
come, was on hand to deliver
recognition certificates.
Member Danny OKane said
that the group often does events
in Phoenixville, Pa., and doesnt
often have the opportunity to
come to the South Jersey area.
Theyre highly organized, he
said of the all-volunteer group.
Its just impressive what they
do.
The founder of A Heros Wel-
come is Sharon Hyland Keyser.
When OKane came home from
submarine duty in 1971, there
was no welcome. He simply put
his uniform away and moved on.
However, that wasnt the case
for his nephew who arrived back
from Afghanistan four years ago
to a big welcome.
The slogan for Warriors Watch
is, We have your backs here at
home.
Garbed in leather or jean vests,
the patriotic group presented an
honor coin.
Later, as the tune of God Bless
America streamed through the
air, the veterans, many of whom
are now confined to wheelchairs,
took turns posing for photo
shoots next to the motorcycles
that were lined in front of the
center.
Thank you for your service,
was the phrase that resonated
through the day, as the bikers
greeted the veterans.
Its a good thing to give back to
the community, said Gommel.
The veterans who live in the fa-
cility have served in various
branches, from the Army to the
Navy, to the Air Force to the Re-
serves.
Theyre very patriotic, she
said. We wanted to do something
nice for them.
As the anniversary of Sept. 11
recently passed, the week was
dedicated to them and their serv-
ice.
Theyre very emotional about
the time of year, said Gommel.
What better way to appreciate
them than to do a welcome home
for them?

G
ov. Christie last week said he
increased funding for schools
statewide by almost $200 mil-
lion. He also said that brought state
support for schools to its highest level
ever.
Now, while providing a quality edu-
cation requires more than just tossing
around dollars, theres no doubt that
local districts are grateful for the sup-
port. They remember all too well re-
cent years when state support was
slashed and tax-hike caps put in place.
Seeing more funds from the state no
doubt makes life a bit easier for all of
them.
When Christie slashed state funding
for schools shortly after taking office,
it indeed created hardship. But it also
made boards of education and admin-
istrators take a step back and rethink
how things are done.
One of the benefits weve seen is a
willingness and even encouragement
on the part of school districts to in-
volve the public in the budget process.
Thats not to say that some districts
werent actively courting public sup-
port before the budget cuts. But, when
everyone found themselves in the same
difficult situation, having to make
tough decisions about taxes and spend-
ing, it seemed like there was new em-
phasis on building public involvement.
We think school board member is
one of the toughest jobs around. Try-
ing to balance the mandate of provid-
ing children with a quality education
with keeping taxes as low as possible is
not easy.
But school boards responded. They
not only opened up the budget process,
they began to seek out creative ways to
save and raise money. They created
partnerships with other districts, for
example. Some are even looking at in-
volving corporate partners who want
to advertise on school property.
Yes, the added state money is wel-
come. But lets also remember that the
sharp budget cuts from a few years
ago, though painful at the time, also led
to improvements.
in our opinion
Education dollars
Theres more money for schools, but the budget cuts also led to progress
Doing things differently
The governor talked about increased
state support for schools. No doubt
that was good news for school board
members and administrators. But lets
not overlook the progress that came
from the budget cuts a few years ago.
Mom proud of daughters project
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Mt. Laurel Sun
Preparations are well underway for Jes-
sica Markowitzs Girl Scout Gold Award
project.
The 16-year-old Lenape High School jun-
ior has well exceeded the required hours of
hours for the project, said her proud moth-
er, Tina Markowitz.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, Jessica will host a
four-hour breast cancer awareness event,
open to the public with R.S.V.P. at her high
school.
The day will begin with a seminar in the
LGI from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by
crafts in the south cafeteria from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the high-
est award a Scout can earn. It is the equiva-
lent of the Boy Scouts Eagle Scout status,
said Tina.
There are a lot of requirements that
you have to do, she said.
For the project, the Scouts have to write
a basic proposal, including the concept of
their idea, how they are going to do it, the
fundraising involved and diagrams, and
then submit it to Girl Scout Council.
Once they have the approval, they can
hit the ground running and do their proj-
ect, she said.
A minimum of 80 hours of work is re-
quired, but Jessicas project has surpassed
that number, reaching at least 115 hours,
said Tina.
It was very, very involved, she said.
Virtua Hospital will be bringing repre-
sentatives to the seminar, and there will be
guest speakers talking of their own experi-
ences.
Jessicas grandmother is a breast cancer
survivor who was diagnosed at age 44. She
will speak. Her great grandmother also
had breast cancer and passed away shortly
after the diagnosis, said Tina.
Its something that runs in our family,
she explained.
Jessica has been regularly updating her
own blog, Pillows For Patients.
PILLOWS FOR PATIENTS
To R.S.V.P., head to Jessicas blog, pil-
lows4patients.wordpress.com, and fol-
low her directions. It is possible to either
solely attend the seminar or to only
attend the crafting section, or to stay
for both, according to her website.

Komen foundation
donated shirts, hats
Her first post, on June 16,
explained that the project had
been in the plans for more
than a year at that point.
We would love helpers,
said Tina of the crafting por-
tion.
Volunteers will be making
compression pillows to place
under armpits to alleviate
pressure from incision sites
following surgery and
drainage bags covers.
The drainage bags help in
draining excess fluids after a
mastectomy.
The Susan B. Komen Foun-
dation also donated 500 T-
shirts and hats.
Were still collecting
things, Tina said, to add to
care packages.
Jessica learned that the
compression pillows are help-
ful through her grandmothers
experience.
We mentioned this one to
her and since its close to her
heart, she thought it would be
a really good choice, said
Tina.
Recent fundraisers for the
project included a car wash
and bake sale as well as a trip
to Lenape High School to start
cutting patterns into different
pieces for the Sept. 22 event.
About 12 people helped her
wash the cars and roughly 20
people headed to Lenape to
help.
This project has helped her
daughter build confidence,
professionalism and leader-
ship skills, Tina said.
I think its giving her some
very lifelong skills that will
help her in so many areas,
she said. Shes feeling very
uplifted and rewarded. Its
been very positive feedback.

Winter is coming!
Time to think about your roof's abiIity to protect your home and famiIy.
Is your roof ready?
A roof protects your home from the elements and is the main defense against water
entering your home.
Most people don`t even think about the roof until a leak occurs and are not aware of
damages that may have already taken place over time. Roof leaks are rarely noticed
as soon as they begin to leak and generally cause costly repairs to more than just the
roof.
You might not even be aware of a leak if water is leaking down inside a wall.
Unknown leaking allows mold to thrive and be a health risk to you and your family.
Do you reaIIy want to wait untiI it Ieaks?
Simply look up to see if something doesn`t look right. Replacing the shingles now is more cost efficient than replacing
