Jorge Cornell has been harassed, provoked illegally, arrested and shot. Yet he forgave those who shot him. He forged a peace treaty among gangs in Greensboro. He ran for city council in 2011, gaining a fourth of the votes in his district. Jorge is supported by clergy, students, community leaders and thousands of ordinary people. He has been charged with 18 felonies in Greensboro without a single conviction. And now the GPD has partnered with the US Justice Dept. to bring RICO charges against him.

Only when people stand together, do we get real justice

The US Attorney and the Greensboro Police Department think so. On Dec 6th, 2011, this person was indicted on federal racketeering charges under the RICO statutes in retaliation for working to make our community better.

This Is A Very Important Meeting Jorge Cornell: working for peace, framed by police.

The Dangerous RICO* Prosecution of Jorge Cornell Lamont Armstrong, Framed By The Greensboro Police, Served 17 Years in Prison Before He Was Exonerated By The Duke University Innocence Project. We Are now Seeing The Same Thing Happen To Cornell in Real Time. In October of 2010, Anita Earls, a former US Department of Justice (DOJ) attorney, filed a Title VI complaint with the DOJ against the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) on behalf of Jorge Cornell, NC leader of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (ALKQN), and a group of ALKQN members. Here is an excerpt from the complaint: The GPD has systematically discriminated against and harassed ALKQN members since the groups formation in 2005. There is evidence showing that the Greensboro Police Departments anti-Latino bias causes it to intentionally target ALKQN members for deportation, bring baseless charges against them, and subject them to unlawful and discriminatory traffic stops, nonconsensual searches, and false arrests often involving the use of excessive force. To put this complaint in context, the Greensboro Police Department has been embroiled in racial controversy for decades. With each controversy, the Greensboro power structure joins with the police to try to make the problem go away so the city and the police - can continue business as usual. But the pressure is building. There are now 49 civil and criminal cases pending against the Greensboro Police Department by current and recently terminated Black and Latino police officers. The police officers are alleging a deeply entrenched sub-culture of double standards and corruption within the GPD. A group of 37 Greensboro citizens including Jorge Cornell - went to Washington to meet with DOJ officials to press the need for federal intervention in the matter of the GPDs longstanding record of civil rights violations. After a thorough discussion of the Greensboro situation, DOJ officials assured the group that DOJ took these concerns seriously and that they would follow up. But there was no follow up and inquiries about the status of the Title VI complaint went unanswered. Just over a year later, DOJ prosecutors charged Cornell and 13 ALKQN codefendants with violating the RICO statute. The charges paint a picture of Jorge as a criminal kingpin and terrorist. Those of us who have worked closely with Jorge know this is ridiculous. The Greensboro News and Record ran a December 11, 2011 editorial about the indictment: Jorge Cornell promoted a peace initiative among street organizations, drawing support from the Beloved Community Center and the Pulpit Forum. He called news conferences to accuse police of harassment and racial discrimination. And he ran for the City Council twice A federal indictment takes note of Cornells efforts to gain

respectability: In an attempt to disguise the criminal activities of the Latin Kings and frustrate law enforcement attempts to investigate and prosecute Latin Kings members, Cornell orchestrated a public relations campaign to falsely portray the Latin Kings as a public service organization A legal process now begins to determine the veracity of these charges If the charges are true, the indictment vindicates police. The charges have nothing to do with justice; their purpose is to vindicate the Police. There are widespread and longstanding accusations of GPD civil rights violations and corruption. In fact the GPD was found liable for wrongful death in federal court related to the 1979 Greensboro killings for which the GPD never acknowledged any wrong doing. Now, incredibly, the US Department of Justice has joined the police in this ploy. They are using their controversial RICO powers to cobble together a dubious conspiracy that is much easier to prosecute than traditional criminal charges. The Justice Department in collaboration with the GPD is casting a wide net among current and former ALKQN members and other associates and threatening them with long prison terms unless they testify that Jorge was directing the mayhem alleged in the indictment. RICO Charges are difficult to defend. Jorges court appointed attorney is already filing motions that discredit pieces of the conspiracy and that demonstrate that the prosecutors are more interested in fully utilizing their RICO advantages to win rather than ensuring that the trial is fair and brings out the truth. Jorges lawyer learned through a Freedom of Information request that DOJ did not investigate the ALKQN Title VI complaint - even though they are required to investigate civil rights complaints and even though their failure to investigate raises serious doubts about their role as unbiased prosecutors. When the trial judge asked DOJ prosecutors about the status of the Title VI complaint in response to a defense motion, they responded that they cannot find any information about the complaint but they will keep looking. While much of this case will have to play out in the courts, the general public can play a crucial role in the outcome by simply paying attention and insisting that Jorge be given a genuinely fair trial that brings out the truth about Jorge and the GPD. We call on citizens to get engaged to help us shine a light on this dangerous prosecution of Jorge Cornell.
