SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH

PASTORS CORNER Dear Parishioners, Jesus to Peter:

P-3

Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.

Well, as a human being I pretty much know how I think, but I am not all that certain that I know how God thinks. Jesus words to Peter are more than harsh. He calls him Satan! In a way I am surprised that it didnt end their relationship right then and there. But it must have been the words that followed that caused Peter to hang around. He must have wondered what so upset his master and teacher and where Jesus dark mood was leading. Lose your life in order to save it. What? At any rate, not thinking as God does seems to have dire consequences. So how does one become schooled in thinking like God rather than the human beings he created us to be? It strikes me that contemplating those things that most distinguish us as created in the image and likeness of God would also give us clues as to how God thinkshow God views things. As human beings our level of intellect and imagination, free will and decision making, certainly set us apart from the world around us. And I have always thought it amusing that one of our specific differences is risibilitythe ability to laugh. So besides the obvious conclusion that God must have a sense of humor, I think that considering the nature of an artist, with all of her or his ways of viewing things might tell us a great deal about how God thinks. Consider the artist standing before his or her work of art. What is the basic desire of an artist at work? We usually speak of passion when we refer to an artist or when we describe their art to someone else. Some years ago, at the beginning of the school year, one of our kindergarteners, Gabriella, presented with me a picture she had drawn of the church. I can tell you it was a divine moment for me. The doors of the church were rendered tall and welcoming and the facade of the church was presented as bathed in bright yellow light. Yes, I believe that is just the way God sees it too. This little girl, not yet so complicated or distracted by responsibility and goals, succeeds in thinking as God thinks, seeing as God sees. What is more, since giving is inherent to the nature of art, she announced to Mrs. Davies, This is for Father Richard. Back to Jesus and Peter. The Father, the Creator, sent his Son into the world to restore his work of artthe Kingdom. I believe that Jesus reaction to Peters rebuke is only a demonstration of his deep desire for the Kingdom and of his passion to bring it about. Only Satan could suggest that the Savior, the Restorer, should hush up about the whole thing for fear of reprisals. Jesus seems horrified at the thought of the real reprisal that would be brought about by his ceasing and desistingthe end of hope, the loss of heaven and of eternal life. In the meantime, you and I are left charged with continuing Jesus restoration. We would do well to go about our task as artistsartists with passion and desire for the Kingdom. We should see the Church as our studio and the world as the canvas on which we leave our unique image of God. We must take heart that it is indeed possible to see and think as God sees and thinks. We only need to consider our homes and the families that dwell there, the peaceful future we desire for our children and youth, and the careers we hope will make a difference, to know what Jesus started continues in us. And in losing our lives to the Kingdom, we will save them. Msgr. Richard PASTORS NEWSNOTES Today I want to add my thanks and gratitude to Martin Boskovich, who served as a very active and important part of our Vision Committee. Martin, please accept my apology for omitting your name in last weeks NewsNotes. Hospitality Sunday was a huge success! I hope last Sundays mingling and meeting with fellow parishionersdid you introduce yourself to someone you didnt know?will be just the beginning of a more connected faith community here at St. Rita. Thank you to all those who helped make Hospitality Sunday a realityMary Lou Butler, Rosemary Hagerott, the St. Rita Guild, the St. Rita Mens Club, any I may have forgotten to list, and a special thank-you to the donor of the table umbrellas! (More tables and more umbrellas will be making an appearance soon.) This is Catechetical Sundaythe beginning of our new year where seasoned members of our faith pass their knowledge and faith in God to the next generation. Thank you to all those who give of their time to do this very important work. Please plan to attend our Ministry Fair next Sunday. All ministries and organizations in our parish are working to create displays to let you know just what is available in our parish. Come see! Msgr. Richard

St. Rita School

Orientation for New Students and Families. Monsignor Richard, Mrs. Harabedian, Teachers, Staff, PTO Board member, school parents, and Student Council hosted an orientation for new students and their parents on September 4. The morning began with a prayer and greeting and was followed by an overview of the fantastic opportunities offered to St. Rita students such as: the CYO Championship sports program; speech and debate; afterschool enrichment classes; Spanish; Mathletics; and state-ofthe-art technology. Student Council offered a thorough tour of the school to the new students while parents met to ask questions and become acquainted. We all joined together for a BBQ lunch to wrap up a delightful morning. All students arrived on Wednesday refreshed and excited to start a new school year and the beginning of celebrating 90 years of Catholic education in Sierra Madre.
