Healthy living is more than eating right and exercising.

Its a whole state of mind, as Ive learned from so many of our enlightened advertisers. Tending to our spirit and our mind is a key part of overall health. I have always understood the importance of a healthy mind, but not so much the spirit. For me, spirituality has always meant religion, but there is a distinction: spirituality seems to be more of what your inner soul is about. It is more of an inner worship, tending to your self. Thinking about the people in my life, I feel as though the ones who always have a positive demeanor and outlook even in the face of adversity have that peace of mind and spirit. That person who, when you think of them, conjures up that smiling face in your mind. I had a friend, Chris, who was that person for me, and did she ever teach me a lot! So unfairly, she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. How helpless you feel when you hear the news. But that girl remained her positive self and fought through it. (I still see that smiling face and those twinkling eyes when I think of her.) What an example for the women/girls in her life! October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an effort to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease and provide greater access to services. Organizers want to empower women to take charge of their own health and commit to regular screenings. Need some motivation? The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 225,000 new breast cancer cases in women in the U.S. in 2012. Tending to your overall health is made a bit easier when you keep an open mind and educate yourself. We have so many great articles to help you on your way. Dawn Matlak presents her case for re-localizing herbalism and re-localizing our healing. Jack A. Erb gives us an overview of super foods what we need to eat. Dr.

John M. Haase discusses the facts around human growth hormone (HGH) and the benefits of raising our levels. These are just a few examples of what we offer you this month. Please read on for more! In honor of those who have lost their brave fights with breast cancer, encourage all of the women in your life to get screened this month, even yourself! In health and happiness,

Do you have a comment or question about something you read in Nature's Pathways? Is there a story you'd like to read? How about something you didn't like as much? Whatever your opinion, we want to know! Please e-mail Jackie at jpeters@naturespathways.com or info@naturespathways.com. Thanks for reading!

things to clear and nurture the energy on a regular basis and they could certainly feel it. Here are 5 steps you can take to both clear and uplift the energy in your home or office so it feels GREAT for you AND your clients:
1. ClAP ArOUND The PeriMeTer Of The rOOM.

I had a beautiful spiritual connection with him.

3. GO ArOUND The rOOM AND eiTher SMUDGe wiTh SAGe Or fiND A SPrAy ThAT hAS SAGe iN iT.

Dense energy in rooms tends to accumulate along the walls and particularly in the corners. Clap in front of you along the wall as you walk the perimeter of the room to break the energy up. You can clap in the corners from the baseboard as high as you can stretch your arms. It can be helpful to have a window open as you are doing this for this dense energy to release. Wash your hands when you are done.
2. GO ArOUND The PeriMeTer Of The rOOM AND riNG A bell.

You can find sage at any new age bookstore. The smoke from sage can be quite heavy, so I have switched to using a spray that has essential oils, including sage. Look online for sprays that contain sage, which is very clearing and purifying.
4. wAlk ArOUND AND STATe iNwArDly Or OUT lOUD yOUr iNTeNTiONS fOr The SPACe.

You can see what bell feels right to you. I use a Balinese bell I had purchased when I was in Bali. I also use a small, very chimey bell that my friend, Reuben, gave me that has meaning for me because

By stating clearly your intentions for the kind of energy and experiences you want to have in the space, you set the tone for the energy. You can say, I invoke the energy of lightness, healing, joy and expansiveness in this space.
5. PlAy SPiriTUAl MUSiC iN The SPACe.

the space to a very high vibration. I use chanting music. My favorite songs are by Snatum Kaur, who does Indian devotional music. My favorite album of hers is Grace. I would play her music in between client sessions and clients would come in and say, It feels SO good in here. Even if you work with your clients by phone, the same energy clearing principles apply. I have phone sessions with my coaching clients in my home office and I keep the energy as clear as it would be if they were walking into the space. When we are on the phone, they are feeling both my energy and the energy of the space I am in at the same time. The more you nurture the energy in your home and office, the more it will nurture you and your clients!

young energy ..................................

by Dr. John m. haase

ere is a simple question: If you could only choose one of the following, which would it be? A lot of money, true beauty, long life or good health? As we all know, money in the bank and looking good dont mean much if you are too tired and sick to enjoy it. The same with old age not so great if you cant get out of bed. The key, of course, is feeling great with vibrant energy. What I like to call young energy. In my last article, the second of this series, called the Aging Revolution, I revealed that the effects of aging can now be significantly reduced by raising the amount of your HGH (human growth hormone). In the past, only weight lifters and professional athletes ventured into the world of performance supplements. But now they are going mainstream, and, if taken correctly, they help us feel better, look better and slow down the troubling effects of Father Time. This article will discuss the facts around HGH, what people like you and me are using right now to raise their HGH and then expose some of the scams that inevitably come with cutting edge health care products.

stimulates new tissue throughout the body. For children, it makes them grow larger by simulating the growth of almost all cells and organs. When youre older, it maintains muscle mass, bone density, skin elasticity, body fat to muscle ratios, hair color and energy levels, just to name a few of the effects. Quite simply, human growth hormone is the real deal. It works and works well. The professional athlete uses it for two reasons: to gain strength and to repair muscle after injury. It allows them to work out harder and stay healthy. You probably already know that a heavy workout breaks down tissue that takes days to repair. HGH activates small cells called myoblasts or satellite cells. These cells live within the muscle to fuse with, and ultimately form, new muscle fibers. The more HGH, the faster the repair and regeneration. Another benefit: HGH selectively burns fat as energy to help get the job done. So you lose weight and get stronger all at the same time. How great is that?

history made in wisconsin

what exactly is hGh?

HGH is a hormone made up of a large number of complex amino acid links formed in the anterior pituitary gland of the brain. It is called the Master Hormone because it has a part in controlling a number of organs directly and almost all organs indirectly. It is released into the blood stream and while it is very short lived, it is picked up by various tissues, and more importantly by the liver, where a secondary but nearly as powerful substance is formed called Igf-1. Igf-1 stays in the system for 12 hours or longer, and because GH (growth hormone) is used up so quickly, Igf-1 is what we actually measure to determine our levels of GH.

The benefits of HGH all became public in the breakthrough study published in the New England Journal of Medicine by Daniel Rudman, an MD in Madison, WI in 1990. Before that time, growth hormone was not easily synthesized and therefore was not available for experimental or clinical use. The results of his study were shocking. Six months of trial use turned back the clock on muscle mass and fatty tissue 10 to 20 years! In addition, in elderly men, smaller organs and muscles re-grew to match an earlier age, and body fat was reduced by 14% without additional exercise or diet.

what about aging and hGh?

why do professional athletes use hGh?

It has been called the fountain of youth hormone because it

Most, if not all, of the effects of aging are directly due to declining hormones. As HGH falls (see the graph), all of our natural healthy hormones fall as well. Stimulating HGH along with proper diet and exercise can produce amazing results. Controlled studies with injectible HGH have shown the following positive effects:
www.naturespathways.com

HGH. Numerous studies citing the effectiveness of various combinations of amino acids and other elements prove that their ingestion directly raises the level of HGH if the correct combination of the proper amount of ingredients is utilized. Bio-stimulators increase production and/or release of human growth hormone directly from the pituitary gland. For instance, doctors at the University of Rome gave a combination of L-Lysine, L-Arginine and L-Pyroglutamate to a group of male volunteers and found that the average GH increase in their bloodstream was more than 700%! The most effective method of raising your HGH is to eat sensibly, avoiding a diet heavy on sugar and fat. Exercise regularly and take an effective bioactive stimulator from a company that has full disclosure of the ingredients.

who could benefit from natural hGh release?

All of these positive benefits can be summed up in one word: vitality! Its the very definition of young energy.

what about the risks of taking hGh?

There are almost no known side effects to naturally increasing your growth hormone production. This is commonly done by extreme exercise, fasting, deep sleep, testosterone and certain amino acid links. In the right combination natural supplements like the BeWellFactory product line can produce remarkable effects. They represent the fastest growing part of the anti-aging movement. HGH can be blocked by excess fatty acids, stress hormones that your body produces like cortisol, and certain drugs. Since insulin counteracts HGH, that will also reduce the amount of growth hormone in your system. So, the more you eat, the less HGH and therefore less fat is broken down, creating a vicious cycle. Injectible HGH does have a few problems such as joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, water gain and diabetes, and is now mainly used for dwarfism and more recently as a performanceenhancing drug. However, the doses are extremely large and the cost is prohibitive. In addition, the FDA does not recognize aging as a disease, so it severely limits HGH use to a few medical conditions, which effectively stops the availability to the public regardless of the documented benefits.

The simple answer is anyone over the age of 35 who feels the pull of declining hormones and wants to try to live with young energy. How do you know that you need or want HGH support? Take an assessment of your biomarkers. There is a free self-scoring test at http://bewellfactory.com/self-test, or just go to the home page of BeWellFactory.com and follow the link to the test there. You are always welcome to call me if you have any questions.

Massage & bodywork therapy

Evolution of sacred touch in mainstream medicine ......................................................................
by ken-adi Ring

any cultures, both East and West, historically have embraced a form of healing touch with roots going back centuries, even millennia. Theres evidence in Egypt of foot and hand rubbing depicted in the Tomb of Akmenthor, BC 2330. Hippocrates wrote in 460 BC, The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing.1 More recently in the 19th century, the Royal Gymnastic Central Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, commissioned Pehr Henrik Ling to apply what was called the Swedish Movement Cure; hence the term Swedish massage. Ling was assisted by a friend, known simply as Ming, an expert in Kung Fu-based, Chinese Tui na massage. Massage has been undergoing development continuously for over 5000 years in China aided by the development of the martial arts styles and formations of gymnastic techniques. Swedish massage spread through Europe and was later popularized by some U.S. physicians, such as Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, of Battle Creek, MI. Origins of the word massage are: French, massage, meaning friction of kneading and Arabic, massa, meaning to touch, feel or handle. With the formation of the American Medical Association, massage fell out of vogue in the early 20th century. The scientific approach to healthcare and the emerging of physical therapy became a dominant force. Need for healing touch, however, never went away. Massage again began to gain prominence in the 1970s thanks to efforts and professional developments such as the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and lobbying efforts. In contemporary times, massage has gained great popularity in sports and business settings. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta first used therapeutic massage as a core medical service to the U.S. Olympic Team. Michael Jordan, other athletes and actors, such as the late Bob Hope, have massage therapists on staff and often get daily treatments.

Natures Pathways | October 2012

Where there were two or three trained masseurs in Madison in 1974, when I started my practice; there are now hundreds practicing massage and/or bodywork. The greater Madison community has a plethora of healing practices in therapeutic massage and bodywork. Where there were no schools, there are now over a half dozen certified schools with massage training programs in Madison. Massage has joined the ranks of professional health care therapies. Basically, massage, soft tissue manipulation, is performed to encourage lifegiving circulation and hydration, to reduce stress and assist the immune system. This author started the first Wisconsin School of Massage & Bodywork in the mid 80s, though short-lived. There were two campuses, one in Madison and one in Milwaukee. Observing this profession grow and evolve over the past three decades, a sense of the depth and awareness is spurred on by renewed evidence of health benefits. A variety of scientific, documented, researched approaches to massage have become available in the massage profession. These include: deep tissue; structural integration, such as Rolfing, developed by Ida Rolf; neuromuscular therapy, advanced by Paul St. John and others; mayofascial therapy; Shiatsu massage; and more. There was a reemergence of the Swedish technique, which the Esalen Institute of Big Sur California evolved. It included a more loving, sensitive and even sensual embracing style. Evidence mounted also in scientific research, as studies showed a contribution and recovery to athletic achievement and pain relief, for example. In a University of Miami study, it is demonstrated that premature babies grow faster and healthier than babies that were not touched with loving therapeutic intention. These and other research studies showed all ages and lifestyles can benefit from intentionally delivered touch; it demonstrates a benefit to not only the client but also the community environment in which (s)he lives. Many of these studies were peer reviewed.
www.naturespathways.com

Our inquiry leads to the psychological and even esoteric world of healing. A listening for what the body-energy system needs was important, but lacking in the medical model. Technology and pharmacology became the emphasized treatment protocol and became increasingly specialized, which had its place. Medicine, however, was becoming compartmentalized. Environments and treatment relationships became more sterile. In the Touch industry, energy approaches to healing massage began to emerge. The whole person was more then the sum of its parts. Some clients responded well to these gentler forms of therapy, thus an increasing demand. Today, delving into the nuances of hands-on healing, there seems no end to the styles and techniques available as an emerging need for a softer, more personal and humanistic approach was evident. At the very conscious level of this work, touch can be considered as sacred. The late Janie Johns, life coach and former founding head of the massage therapy program at Madison Area Technical College, said, Life is a source of sacred energy flow and it flows in around and through us all the time. We need but be open to access it. Bridging to the sacred, energy paths include: Shiatsu or finger pressure, which works with the acupressure points and energy meridians of the body; polarity therapy, developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, is working with special energy touch techniques and polarity dynamics of the human energy field; and Reiki, developed by Usui Shiki Ryoho, a Japanese healer and researcher, utilizes universal life force. Milwaukee-based Helen Borth was the first Reiki Master in Wisconsin from whom I received training. Providers like Helen impressed the sacred upon their students. Therapeutic Touch developed by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, and healer Dora Van Gelder Kunz, and Richard Gordons Quantum Touch were developed as avenues of intention. TT and QT are intentionally directed processes of energy exchange, with the practitioners hands being a focus facilitating the healing process. In Reiki, the clients energy field draws energy from the universal life force and practitioner is facilitator or gateway. Another form achieving credibility both as a deepening form of gentle bodywork and in energy practitioner circles is Thai massage. This is a form in which the whole system is moved and stroked and gently articulated and twisted in an integrated way using methods of movements, pulling, pushing, stroking and cradling. This treatment is usually done on the floor, though it can

be delivered on a table if preferred. Another cultural adaptation is Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, a gift of the Kahunas. A new avenue I am formulating from my dual professions of hypnosis and massage therapy is Hypnossage, the combining of touch therapy with the deepening access of mindful hypnotic relaxation, which has been well received. We have established possibilities of sacred touch. The medical efficacy and implications of the evolving massage profession are evident. Hands-on healing was brought to a new level with this influx. There are many more forms of massage and bodywork/ energy work, too many to be included here. Widespread use and acceptance of professional massage and bodywork, TT, Reiki and other forms of sacred touch are widely practiced today in mainstream health care delivery as well, including widespread use in clinics, hospitals, HospiceCare, even ICUs and pre- and post-natal care units, and of course in health clubs and spas. Serving as a delegate at the 66th AMTA National Convention in Orlando, I was reminded how important this work is to community and of its growing importance as both a treatment and preventative. Though therapeutic massage as an art and a science has become an arm of the medical profession and is rapidly moving and positioning as a central health care modality welcomed and utilized in mainstream medicine, it is important to remember we are consciousness embodied, we are molecules of emotion as well as physical structures. In that light, all touch therapy is sacred as the care is delivered with intention. Our approach to each other is best done with respectful regard, honor and with permission. In our approach we best listen for and be careful of our unique boundaries. Along with obvious similarities, we each have our differences, and our needs and reception models of care will vary. Carl Rogers Person Centered Psychotherapy teaches that empathy and positive, unconditional regard are necessary for treatment. Add touch therapy, and it is the definition of sacred intention. So treated, both client and therapist benefit from the exchange of this sacred work. Both are uplifted and drawn to an experience of a higher Self, as a completed circle, shared as giving and receiving are one.

health of your canine BFF, but also of yours! Exercise is as important for your dog as it is for you! As with people, obesity is becoming a major health problem in todays dogs. Many diseases seen in dogs are linked to obesity and lack of exercise. Forty percent of all dogs seen by veterinarians in the United States are considered overweight, with many clinically obese. If the physical threats associated with obesity arent enough, there are the behavioral aspects of lack of exercise. Dogs are active by nature. Their ancestors, wolves, covered many miles every day in search of food. Many domestic dogs were selectively bred to be even more active, hunting, herding or patrolling, hour after hour. Preventing them from their genetically programmed activity level only builds frustration, which usually exhibits itself in the form of hyperactivity, barking, digging, tail chasing and home destruction. Lack of exercise is one of the major reasons behind many causes of problem behavior. Remember, its difficult for a tired dog to get into trouble. Dont think you can just stick your dog in the yard and hell exercise himself. Unless he has a friend, or lots of stimulation on the other side of the fence (in which case hes probably barking too much to be a good neighbor) he may chase his tail a few times, sniff around and then just sit there. Youll need to play coach to get him in shape.

Questions to ask your doggie daycare facility:

1. May I take a tour? (If denied, move on.) 2. How many dogs in a group? (Should be <20.) 3. What is your emergency plan? 4. What is the procedure if your dog gets sick or injured? 5. Is the staff trained in first aid and CPR? 6. Are the dogs supervised? 7. Is the staff knowledgeable in obedience training and pack behaviors? 8. What techniques are used to correct and reward behaviors? 9. What games/activities do they plan?

Holistic doggie daycare is one that treats each guest as an individual, with a focus on developing a well-rounded pooch. The group sizes should never be larger than 20, and breaks should be allowed so over-stimulus doesnt develop into an unbalanced dog. The daycare workers should have knowledge of basic obedience training and will work with your dog one-on-one to ensure his individual training and play needs are met. A day at a holistic doggie daycare will result in a fun day that will create a tired and well-mannered pooch!

8-week-old puppy or you have adopted an adult dog, there is no better way to break the ice than by attending training classes. Even if you have attended dog training classes in the past, each relationship you develop with your canine companion is unique. Because dogs have a pack mentality, being in a group setting helps your dog create confidence in you as a pack leader. Not only does training work the physical aspect of your dog, but it will provide your dog with a strong trust in you, which creates a well-balanced and well-behaved companion.

P for play

Set time aside everyday to play with your dog. There isnt anything that would make him happier! Go for a walk or run. Play fetch or take him swimming. Enroll Fido in structured play groups where he not only gets exercised, but develops good socialization skills. Play groups are also a great place to practice your dogs training skills in a group setting with you there to be his pack leader. For those that have busy schedules, enroll your dog in doggie daycare. Ensure the facility has holistic practices. A doggie day care that is poorly supervised by untrained or inexperienced staff could have a negative impact on your dog.

expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Gym membership benefits, the women & weight training myth and sports nutrition product options ....................................................................
by karmen nenahlo

Question: If I want to get in the best shape of my life, is a gym membership required? Answer: Thats an interesting question. Despite the fact that I work for Anytime Fitness, I have to tell you the answer is no. A gym membership is not required to get into great shape. In fact, you can get a fantastic workout doing just bodyweight exercises in the comfort of your own home. That said, having a membership to your local club does increase the number of tools in your toolbox. In other words, gyms typically have a lot of high-quality equipment that you simply wouldnt have access to otherwise, and the culture and environment in the gym can be very motivating. Youll typically also find fitness experts that can help you determine the best path forward in terms of reaching your goals. So based on these benefits, and many others, do I recommend you join a gym? Yes. But do you absolutely need to join one in order to get in great shape? No. Question: My wife thinks shell get big and bulky if she starts lifting weights with me. How do I convince her otherwise? Answer: This comes up all the time, and its one of the biggest myths out there. First of all, women simply dont have the proper hormonal balance to put on large amounts of muscle tissue. Secondly, even if they did have the right physiology, it would take some serious training to do it. Getting bigger muscles requires high-volume workouts (lots of sets and reps) and a pretty high intensity as well. Picking up a few weights here and there isnt a recipe for building mass its what you do and how you do it that really makes the difference. Remind your wife that weight training programs can always be tailored to specific goals, so if she doesnt want to put on large amounts of muscle, thats just fine. Generally
14
Natures Pathways | October 2012

speaking, a full-body circuit with higher rep ranges a few days per week would work well if shes just looking to tone up or maintain her current level of muscle tissue. If she wants to get an individualized program based on her goals, look for a qualified personal trainer in your area. Question: I train for a lot of endurance events and Im getting tired of the same old sports drinks. Are there any alternatives that would work just as well? Answer: Absolutely! There are many other engineered sports nutrition products that are designed for consumption during training sessions and races. Gels are a popular choice and so are Sharkies, Sports Beans, Clif Shot Bloks and Cytomax Energy Drops. All of these essentially function in the same way, and provide carbohydrate for energy and some much-needed electrolytes. Some may include other ingredients as well, including caffeine. Your best bet is to experiment with several options during your training to find out whats most palatable and well tolerated. Its also important to remember that these products are very concentrated, so they need to be consumed with plenty of water to help with the digestive process. If you fail to do this, youll likely end up with gastrointestinal distress, and no one wants that in the midst of a training session or race. Lastly, lets not forget about good ol solid food. Some people perform really well consuming bananas, pretzels and even candy like M&Ms. The issue here is finding something thats both easy to carry and will keep well throughout your event. Good luck!

Safety first in kids halloween costumes ............................................................................

ressing up and engaging in role play is an important component of childhood learning and having fun. Although costumes are regularly used in day care centers, schools and at home, they become the center of attention when Halloween arrives. The practice of wearing costumes dates back at least 2,000 years to ancient Europeans and Celts. These cultures celebrated a holiday called Samhain, which represented their new year. Samhain fell on November 1 and marked the first day of winter after the summer harvest. These ancient people associated the winter with coldness, darkness and death, and believed the day before Samhain October 31 established a distorted boundary between the living and the dead. Therefore, individuals wore costumes and masks to avoid being recognized by the ghosts that came out on the night of Samhain. They would also place bowls of food outside of their homes to satisfy the ghosts and keep them from entering the home. Although Halloween has transformed more into a commercial holiday than one associated with death and the afterworld in the literal sense, many adults and children continue to participate in the rituals that were set forth many years ago, most notably wearing costumes. Parents may want to ensure that the costumes their children wear are safe to help make Halloween a day without injury. Create a cape that doesnt choke. A long cape can be stepped on and then tug at a childs neck. Instead, make a cape that has arm loops to keep it in place instead of a tie around the neck. This way there never will be a choking hazard. Check makeup labeling. There are many safe Halloween cosmetics on the market, but some should not be used around the eyes or mouth because allergic reactions could occur. Double-check all ingredients lists and package warnings before using makeup on children, who tend to have more sensitive skin than adults. Also, it is a good idea to do a test patch of the product. Put a small dab of the makeup in the crook of the inside of the childs elbow. Wait 24 hours and see if any itching or a rash forms. This could indicate an allergy to the product.
16
Natures Pathways | October 2012

Keep eyes open. Masks are popular components of Halloween

costumes, but some designs can obstruct vision or even impair breathing. Masks always should be comfortable to wear and offer good forward and peripheral views. Choose natural materials for costumes. Buying a pre-made costume at the store may save you time and money, but there may be safer options if you construct a costume yourself. Many costumes are made overseas and may contain materials that are toxic or off-gas volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), particularly plastic and vinyl products. Breathing in the fumes can be dangerous to young children. By making the costume yourself, you can control what fabrics and other materials are used. Go organic. There are a number of companies that are now making Halloween costumes from organic fabrics and recycled materials. A simple online search can give you a host of prospects for purchasing these costumes. Make it visible. Trick-or-treating at night can be, well, tricky. Darkness can make it hard for drivers and other pedestrians to see costume-clad children. If going door-to-door will be happening at night, consider giving children glow sticks or flashlights to carry. There also are reflective tapes that can be attached to costumes that make them light up when lights shine on the tape. Avoid choking hazards. Many costumes come with small detailing or accessories that may be hazardous to young children. Youngsters who do not yet know what items should and should not be put in their mouths should not wear costumes with removable or small detailing. Also, avoid the use of fake teeth (such as vampire fangs) and fake blood or goo capsules that are meant to be bitten, so they wont be swallowed.

Halloween is meant to be a time of fun and adventure. Ensuring costumes are safe for children can help make the day even more enjoyable for all involved.

A monthly advice column for your energy system ......................................................................

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind.

ometimes we all need a reminder of how to stay in balance, including myself. For this months column I thought an experience I had would resonate with many of you regarding this. I was driving back home from a relaxing holiday weekend when it started to downpour. Lighting was striking left and right, and the rain on the windshield left no room to see the speeding cars around me. This has always been a source of panic for me in the past not having control of the surroundings and knowing that at any moment a car could lose control. My heart starting racing almost immediately. I clenched up and squinted my eyes as if this would help the situation. I could feel my panic locking inside my body as I tensed all my muscles leaving no room for it to release. This stressful situation went on for about 45 minutes. I contemplated stopping at a rest stop, but I was 3 hours from home and missed my family. Then, suddenly and subtly reminded, I realized that I couldnt change the situation. I was inspired to see what the rain could do for me rather than obsess over how it was hurting me. I imagined (with my eyes open) that the rain was penetrating into the top of my head. Every pore allowed more and more purifying water
Natures Pathways | October 2012

to enter my tense physical self. Down like a waterfall it fell until it reached my feet, all the while creating ease and fluidity in my muscles. My brow unfurrowed and I smiled. It felt wonderful. So wonderful that I started laughing. Yes, it was a bit ridiculous to laugh out loud in the car surrounded by a thunderstorm, but it was amazing. My experience reminds us all that the most difficult part of selfhealing is remembering to do so. Remembering that you really do have control of your experience. Healing is becoming whole. In any given moment, ask yourself, Do I feel whole right now? If the answer is No, then remember to use the tools around you to create wholeness for yourself. Have fun!
Tina, a Madison-based intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina opened The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural intuitive gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

re-localizing herbalism ...............................................................

by Dawn matlak
ioregional herbalism teaches us that the plants around us are often edible and medicinal. In fact, you may have recently purchased them in tea or pill form, while they are right there, growing near the waters edge. Even in the jungle of cityscapes, amidst the mesh of barbed wire and the links of chain fences, there is medicine natural medicine eking out an existence like the rest of us; pushing itself up through the ground with a minimum of nutrients and a smattering of sunlight; holding fast to an accumulation of detritus in the far end of a gutter. The will of a seed to germinate is incredibly great, write Claudia AbbotBarish and Meghan Murphy. What would it take for us to see our medicine as living and vibrant just as we are?

Centrality

First, get your bearings. What time is sunset today? How many days until the moon is full? Is the soil under your feet more clay, sand, rock or silt? Can you name five birds that live here, and do you know which are migratory and which stay put? What primary geological processes or events shaped the land here? Can you name five edible plants in your neighborhood, and the seasons they are available? Now, take a moment and consider what fruits and vegetables are grown here throughout the year. Although fresh local

of preservation-minded eaters throughout the seasons. As we increase our efforts to eat locally, we discover the abundance (and limitations) inherent in consuming foods grown in our area. This has an effect of connecting us more intimately with our surroundings, and better understanding the greater cycles of nature that we live within. In a similar turn, local herbalism reflects this wisdom. According to Michael Tierra, locally grown food and herbs harmonize ones blood chemistry with the climate and environment thickening and acidifying the blood in colder climates, while thinning and alkalinizing it in warmer climates . Herbs work differently than supplements such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Rather than merely filling a hole caused by the absence of nutrients (the result of prolonged ingestion of nutritionally deficient, chemically grown foods), herbs allow our bodies to more efficiently extract those nutrients from wholesome foods. Many healing traditions teach that health imbalances respond best to treatments that originate in our immediate surroundings. When we reorient ourselves and pay attention to where we live, stand, breathe, work and build, might we also find tools for healing all around us? Juliette Abigail Carr of Old Ways Herbals illustrates this possibility: I can say with confidence that every region has representatives of the major medicines humans use. Its one of the most beautiful aspects of co-evolution, and to me its magic. Whether its an herb that will help knit a wound, soothe a colicky baby, fight infection or lift the blues whatever we need, the place we live has it, wherever that place may be . We dont need the miracle this or the super-cure that from the other side of the planet. Herbs have an intelligence all their own, which is quite remarkable and humbling for humans to acknowledge. Peeka Trenkle describes the wisdom of dandelion: One plant that most suburban dwellers love to hate is the dandelion, which proliferates in areas that are polluted with toxic petrochemicals and heavy metals. One of the purposes of the tap root of the dandelion is to pull toxins out of the soil and restore it to health, the same way dandelion-root tea can help to detoxify our livers. Yet another reminder that we are much more connected to the plant life around us than we often pay attention to. Rosemary Gladstar writes that Many of our most plentiful and weedy species are those herbs considered tonics or food herbs. Herbs such as burdock root and dandelion, chickweed and cleavers, nettle and red clover grow in abundance across the landscape unpampered, mostly unappreciated, these feisty weeds are full of vitality themselves and offer us a path to well-being. The distinctions between food and medicine can be deliciously unclear. Everyday I say, Thats the best wild salad ever! says Linda Conroy of Moonwise Herbs. Yesterday it was the wild mushrooms we harvested. Weve been eating a lot of purslane lately, in lacto-fermented pickles, as a pot herb and in pesto. Last week, it was milkweed pods. We put up a lot of wild edibles so that we can eat them all year long. Like Willy Street Co-ops own Eat Local Challenge, could we also challenge ourselves to re-localize our healing? Why is this challenging in the first place?

T
heres something very serene about the drive to Spring Green in the fall. The rolling hills, the dazzling color, the crisp, clean air; it is nature at its finest. Upon arrival, the tranquil, supportive, small community welcomes you as one of its own. What sticks out initially is a unique combination of commerce, agriculture and the arts. Looking closer, youll find some healthy living establishments that you must experience. Meet their owners and what youll learn is that they have a very good sense of well-being. Its one thing to be devoted to a healthy lifestyle, yet another to have the passion to help others on their journeys. Thats just what three businesswomen in Spring Green are doing with their lives. Meet Cecilia Farran of 43/90 North Earth, Debora Morton of Driftless Depot and Cassandra Vieth of Lexington Fitness. Each brings something different to the table when it comes to your total health and wellness.

tranquil beauty, where seekers can gain spiritual strength from the very earth of the Wisconsin River Valley. Farran is ever-conscious of our precious planet. As a way to honor Earth and the beautiful land of southwest Wisconsin, she named her business after the global location of the store: latitude 43 (degree symbol) north, longitude 90 (degree symbol) west. And its been tested! After inquiring about the name, a somewhat uptight male customer left the store and re-immerged with a brand-new GPS, seemingly set on proving me wrong. But sure enough, the location was accurate, Farran jokingly shares. It is certainly a location you should plan on visiting soon! As Farran puts it, If the state of the world is getting you down or your own path is strewn with rocks at the moment, come visit! 43/90 North Earth and Farran have a unique way to soothe your mind, inspire your spirit and comfort your soul.

43/90 North Earth has been the fulfilling lifes work of Cecilia Farran for twelve years now. The thoughtful, deeply spiritual woman makes it a priority to provide the perfect atmosphere in her gift store for self nurturing. Its more than a shop, she says, Its a haven, a respite, an oasis of calm. Amongst the peace and quiet, however, is also the opportunity for gentle conversation. Many of Farrans customers find that she is an extremely knowledgeable spiritual resource. The voracious reader feels strongly about feeding her inner wisdom, from which she generates new ideas, offers guidance and shares a sense of the sacred. Dubbed as Southwest Wisconsins most complete source for selfhelp and conscious living, 43/90 North Earth also offers gifts, of course! One could spend hours browsing the unique assortment of books, apparel, jewelry, garden dcor, stationery, CDs, home dcor and more all selected by Farran to bring clarity and calm to your life. People need to do more inner work in this crazy world, she advises. Youll find she encourages well-being, self awareness, social ethics, conscious growth, peace and green living. Nestled beneath a strong, ancient spirit oak, 43/90 North Earth seems perfectly situated for such a business. Spring Green offers a

Driftless Depot, an organic market, deli and caf, is Debora Mortons way of helping people enjoy the eclectic bounty of the food world and choose their food more conscientiously. Since opening her business in June 2011, it has become a destination for customers who appreciate organic products that support a sustainable environment. What makes Driftless Depot unique is that Morton herself is a great resource of information and only offers products that she has tested and approved. She is always researching a variety of healthy food options and will even take requests if a customer doesnt find what they are looking for. Just as the tagline suggests, everything that is offered in the establishment is mindfully selected. Morton takes care to purchase locally, certified organic whenever possible and selects heirloom and unique varieties of products for quality and pleasureful cooking. My husband and I are also growers and love to cook. All our products we know well and use ourselves. Preparing good quality food is not only healthy, but brings friends and family together another aspect of wellness. Morton serves gourmet sandwiches daily at lunch time and a wonderful fresh Wisconsin trout dinner on Friday evenings (RSVP only). Watching the hardworking woman in action, you see her devotion

to her customers. Everyone is made to feel at home, is well taken care of and is graciously thanked for their business. Driftless Depot is a wonderful asset not only to the community here in Spring Green, but also to the many who travel here, one customer shared. Similar to Farran (above), Morton also named her business after the beautiful land she has called home for 30 years. We have people stopping in from all over the world, so I take the opportunity to educate them about our healthy, growing area, she explains. The driftless area, part of which is in southwestern Wisconsin, is noted mainly for its deeply carved river valleys and for having escaped glaciation in the last glacial period. Many in the Madison area and beyond are finding that it is the place to visit, especially in fall. Morton invites you to Driftless Depot, where she had made it easy to shop mindfully.

Lexington Fitness is the product of Cassandra Vieths (Cassy) passion for both personal fitness and helping people. After seeing a real need in Spring Green for a fitness facility, the Richland Center resident opened Lexington Fitness in November 2011. There was nothing of its kind within a half-hour drive, she explains. Fitness is a way of life for me, so I want it conveniently available to all. Jim DeVita, a 19-year resident of Spring Green, couldnt agree more. My family was so happy to see this facility open. It is great for our community. We love this gym! DeVita bought a family membership the day of opening and they are familiar faces at 24/7 Lexington Fitness. DeVita is quick to point out that there is so much great energy in the place due to Cassys obvious commitment to ensuring her members be successful. I enjoy helping and training people to reach their fitness goals, says Cassy, who has been in and around the fitness industry for 30 years. Lexington Fitness is filled with new cardio, selectorized and functional training equipment and free weights, and offers a wide variety of group fitness classes. As a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, she understands the benefits of functional training and has incorporated that into the programming. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program consisting of constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements, according to Cassy. This type of anaerobic activity causes your body to burn energy in all three metabolic pathways and keeps it burning all day. It doesnt stop with activity for Cassy. Members need to be aware of nutrition, the foods and amount of food they are putting in their bodies, she advises. A big culprit in her eyes: high-glycemic foods. All of this training and nutrition talk may seem overwhelming to the average person, but thats why Cassy is here. Shes a knowledgeable source who strives to make the lifestyle of fitness available, understandable and do-able for everyone. When it comes to overall fitness, in Cassys words, Consistently challenging oneself in a variety of ways and choosing quality fuel to keep you going are Habits for a Fit Lifestyle.

Acai
(Euterpe oleracea) ..........................................

he acai (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) palm tree, native to tropical Central and South America, produces a reddishpurple berry that is related to the blueberry and cranberry. The acai berrys name, which comes from a language of the native people of the region, means fruit that cries.

Laboratory studies have focused on acai berrys potential antioxidant properties (antioxidants are substances that are thought to protect cells from damaging effects of chemical reactions with oxygen). Laboratory studies also have shown that acai berries demonstrate anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity.

what acai is used for

Acai has become popular in the United States, where it has been promoted as a superfood. Acai berry products have been widely marketed for weight-loss and anti-aging purposes, but there is no definitive scientific evidence to support these claims. The acai berry has long been an important food source for indigenous peoples of the Amazon region, who also use acai for a variety of health-related purposes. Acai fruit pulp has been used experimentally as an oral contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the gastrointestinal tract.

Side effects and cautions

how acai is used

There is little reliable information about the safety of acai as a supplement. It is widely consumed as an edible fruit or as a juice. People who are allergic to acai or to plants in the Arecaceae (palm) family should not consume acai. Consuming acai might affect MRI test results. If you use acai products and are scheduled for an MRI, check with your health care provider. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Acai berry products are available as juices, powders, tablets and capsules.

what the science says

There is no definitive scientific evidence based on studies in humans to support the use of acai berry for any health-related purpose. No independent studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals that substantiate claims that acai supplements alone promote rapid weight loss. Researchers who investigated the safety profile of an acai-fortified juice in animals observed that there were no body weight changes in rats given the juice compared with controls.

Tips from Tony ......................................................................

by Tony bednarowski

burn baby burn!

Research has proven that a pound of muscle burns 30 times more calories than a pound of fat. Thats why it is absolutely essential that you preserve your muscle mass while ridding your body of those undesirable fat pounds.

lets burn some fat!

Did you know that the optimal heart rate for burning body fat is 80% of your hearts maximum capacity? There is an easy way to figure out how to get the most out of your cardiovascular workout. Here is a simple formula to calculate your perfect target heart rate so you can maximize your fat burning potential:
220 - (yOUr AGe) = (x) * .8 = yOUr PerfeCT zONe exAMPle: 220 - 35 = 185 * .8 = 148 beATS Per MiNUTe

1. Weigh yourself only one time per week. 2. Weigh yourself on the same day every week. 3. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Remember, weight loss comes in unpredictable spurts, so dont get frustrated if you have a week or two with no weight loss; its just your body making adjustments that are necessary in order for your progress to continue and be permanent. A persons weight can fluctuate five or more pounds throughout the day, so by following these three very important but simple rules you will have a clear cut and accurate picture of how your true weight loss is going.

Also keep in mind that if you do some type of weight training, ALWAYS do your cardio workout afterward. Why? Well, during a weight training session you burn muscle glycogen. This will leave your body searching for an alternate source of fuel when it comes time to power through your cardio workout. This alternate fuel will come directly from fat storage, thus helping you burn more body fat at a quicker rate.

Seeing signs of progress beyond the scale!

Can i spot reduce fat?

Unfortunately, it is impossible to reduce fat in a specifically targeted area of your body. Body fat is reduced in layers. So, for example, doing crunches will strengthen your mid-section but will not take the fat off your stomach. Similarly, an activity like walking or running will burn fat all over your body, not just in your legs or butt area. However, you can incorporate a sensible exercise program along with healthy eating habits to speed up your weight loss while toning your body.

Take a trip to your closet and take out a pair of pants that fit snuggly before you began your new healthy lifestyle. Are you able to ease into them, when before it was a chore just to get them on? This is a sure sign that progress is at hand. There are many everyday indicators that will give you hints that your body is changing, from the way your clothes are fitting to just sitting more comfortably in a chair.

why do you need a coach to lose weight? .....................................................................

by chuck urmann
f you are like me, you have lost weight many times only to gain it back. I started my weight loss journey 16 months before being introduced to a health coach. During that 16 months on my own, I did what I had learned from past weight-loss successes and only managed to lose around 23 pounds. After skeptically starting with a health coach and his program, I began to lose weight right away and managed to lose an additional 40 pounds in a 10-week period. I was not a skeptic anymore and was so impressed I wanted to pay it forward by becoming a health coach myself. Who knew that I would be able to make this a full-time career? My weight loss was due to the assistance of my health coach and his program, which combines medically-proven, portioncontrolled meal replacements with a free coach that I could go to with my questions, problems and successes. Having the health coach was like having access to a free accountability partner. I was able to use this free health coach as much or as little as I wanted. As a health coach now, I am very careful to respect my clients space and to find out right away how often they want contact. Most of the time I am in communication with clients more in the first few weeks and less often as time goes on when they have the hang of it. I am always open to clients contacting me whenever they wish. Because I coach people all over the country, all communication is by phone, e-mail and text. After I attained my weight-loss goal, my health coach made sure that I knew how to transition slowly back up to normal calories. The reason we gain our weight back after a long time of reduced calories is because we feel we accomplished our goal and go back to eating as we did before the diet. On the program I used and now work with, we slowly over a couple of weeks add calories and make sure that clients realize the importance of continuing to eat five to six times a day. We also encourage clients to practice an exercise plan that they enjoy and that is sustainable. We as coaches are available for you and there is program support available free of charge whenever you need us after youve transitioned. I have clients who call me multiple times a week and others who, after the first couple of weeks, dont need my support. Its all up to them. I would love to help you get on the road to long-term health. Give me a call or e-mail and lets get started. Just commit to

Do you know how important your liver is? ......................................................................

by marcia k. Simler, cnhP
our liver is the most important organ in the body. A healthy liver is essential for a healthy life; it has a profound bearing on mental and emotional states, physical health, longevity and the quality of virtually every body function. As the bodys main detoxifier, the liver is vitally important in the neutralizing effects of environmental pollution. About one in one hundred thousand people have a healthy liver. The reasons for this disturbing fact include poor dietary patterns, poor attitudes, stress, use of drugs (both prescription medications and so-called recreational) and heredity, which can all be summed up as lifestyles and circumstances that are contrary to the natural laws of life. Each organ and system takes a break for awhile (5 to 6 weeks) and doesnt work up to par. This is the time for the liver to rest a little from all its functions. During this time, it is very important to support and cleanse the liver to obtain a better level of health. Signs that your liver is not functioning correctly may include irritability, crabbiness, anger, resentfulness and feeling too tired to do anything normally. Support the liver with milk thistle, red beet root or other cleanses/supports to help it through this period.

Many peoples immune systems are no longer able to hold their own against a polluted environment, antibiotic-altered microorganisms, immunization-altered antigen responses, prescription drug-altered metabolisms and their high-stress lifestyles. In fact, the liver may well be an integral part of the immune system. It provides primary support to the endocrine glands, which help regulate the immune system. The liver recycles hormones relieving the much over-worked adrenals and thyroid glands. Regarding the allergic (hyper-immune) response, the liver helps control the histamine reaction.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired??

The natural detoxification of the body (removal of poisons and metabolic waste products) is based primarily on the liver functions. The liver processes gases in the blood stream. If the liver is congested and its function impaired, these gases are passed along to the lungs for elimination, resulting in foul breath and greater stress on the lungs. Additional gasses interfere with proper breathing and respiration. Many other functions of the liver include: blood management (vascular), nutrient storage, bile, gamma globulin and cholesterol secretion, blood cleansing, damaged red blood cell removal, blood pressure maintenance, blood clotting factors production and fatty acid regulation. The liver stores vitamins A, D, E, K and B-12, glycogen for energy and minerals; metabolizes protein, carbs and fats for energy; and constructs over 50,000 systems of enzymes to govern metabolic activity. Did you know? ......................................................................

here are many health benefits associated with vegetarianism. Research indicates that vegetarians have lower levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, and obesity rates are generally lower among vegetarians than their meateating counterparts. In addition, vegetarians have reduced incidences of type 2 diabetes and lower blood prevssure than meat eaters. However, unless their diets are well-balanced, vegetarians also may have low levels of protein, which can compromise their overallhealth. Protein is essential to build and repair bodily tissues and provide amino acids. Muscle, hair, skin and connective tissue are mainly made up of protein, as are several important chemicals in the body, including hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters. Proteins are made up of amino acids. There are some amino acids that cannot be produced by the body and must come from a protein-rich diet. Many of the foods that contain protein are animal-based (meats, poultry, milk, eggs, etc.), and these foods are commonly avoided by vegetarians and vegans. As a result, their bodies may be deficient in vital nutrients. The amount of protein needed varies by ones body weight, age and activity level. A person who is 150 pounds should eat roughly 55 grams of protein each day. A 200-pound

person should eat around 75 grams. An ounce of meat has around 7 grams of protein per serving. Therefore, vegetarians will have to replace those grams with other sources of protein. Here are some options:
Eggs (large): 6 grams Milk (1 cup): 8 grams

Cottage cheese (1/2 cup): 15 grams Cheese (1 ounce): 6-10 grams Tofu (1 ounce): 2.3 grams Most beans (1/2 cup cooked): 7-10 grams Soybeans (1/2 cup cooked): 14 grams Split peas (1/2 cup cooked): 8 grams Peanuts (1/4 cup): 9 grams Sunflower seeds (1/4 cup): 6 grams Quinoa (2 ounces cooked): 2.5 grams

Alpaca fleece Mother Natures insulation ............................................

by Sally & Tom Schmidt

lpacas are native to South America, where they live in the high mountainous regions of Chile, Bolivia and Peru. Their largest import to the U.S. occurred from 1984-1998, according to Alpaca Registry, Inc. Since that time, the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association estimates that the North American alpaca herd has grown to over 100,000 animals. These versatile animals were designed to survive extreme temperatures, both cold and hot. Part of their fiber is hollow. The air pocket inside their hollow-core fiber provides alpacas with Mother Natures insulation. In cold temperatures, the hollow hair traps an alpacas body heat, surrounding them in a protective barrier of warmth. The only time an alpaca feels the winter cold is when the wind blows, separating their fiber and breaking through their layer of insulation. Alpaca fleece has even been used in sub-zero temperatures to prevent emergency communication electronics from seizing up. George Meyer of RJM Auto Electrics in Mount Isa, Australia is a specialist in arctic conditions and materials suitable for use in extreme environments. He says, There is only one other natural material that rivals alpaca fleece for its warmth, but it is very hard to get hold of: polar bear fur. (Alpacas Australia Magazine, Winter 2004) Yes, polar bears also have hair that is hollow. Mother Natures insulation can also be found on caribou, white-tailed deer and antelope. Alpaca fiber is equally effective at keeping you cool when the weather heats up. The air pockets act as insulation against the heat. This keeps your body temperature cooler than your surroundings. Simply stated, in summer it blocks the heat out. In winter, it keeps the heat in. This concept is sometimes difficult to grasp, but if you think of alpaca fleece like the insulation in the walls of your home, it becomes easier to understand. When alpaca fleece is made into a finished garment, it retains its wonderful insulating properties. A person wearing alpaca clothing experiences better temperature regulation, leading to a better quality of life. Everyone can benefit from the natural insulation

provided by alpaca clothing, but it is especially helpful for people with circulatory problems. Persons living with health conditions such as Raynauds syndrome, diabetes, arthritis and hormonal imbalance can benefit greatly by wearing alpaca clothing. Maintaining a constant core body temperature is also critical for the elderly, cancer patients and those who have suffered traumatic injuries. (Raynauds Association, American Diabetes Association, Cancer Survivors Association) Harvesting alpaca fleece is done by shearing the alpaca with electric shears. Shearing is done by professionals who are trained in proper care of the alpaca and its fleece. After shearing, the fleece is ready for processing. Alpaca fleece is a renewable natural resource. Regular shearing is important to maintaining healthy alpacas. For alpacas living in Wisconsin, the best time to shear is in late spring. Once they are sheared the alpacas continue growing more fleece. This allows them to attain 1 to 2 inches of fleece growth before winter arrives again. The fiber that is harvested is made into clothing, allowing us to enjoy the insulation that has helped alpacas survive for hundreds of years. So, the next time you feel too hot or too cold, remember Mother Natures insulation alpaca fleece.
Sally & Tom Schmidt began Sabamba Alpaca Ranch and Bed & Breakfast in 2006. Located in De Pere, WI, they have successfully grown an award-winning herd of over fifty huacaya alpacas. Sally served as a director on the board of the Alpaca Fiber Co-op of North America and is a member of the National Show Committee for 2013. Sally & Tom specialize in educating new and existing alpaca owners. They focus on industry trends, health care, handling skills, product and business development, fiber sorting and grading, and breeding consulting. Their next Beginners Seminar will be held Saturday, October 13, 2012. Reservation required. Sabamba Alpaca Ranch also features a bed & breakfast. Guests interested in alpacas can stay overnight for a full alpaca lifestyle experience. Jane employs a health coach for weight-loss effort .....................................................................................

ummer 2012 was one for the record books: hot, humid and dry. It took everything we could do to stay cool, and that included wearing our loosest clothing. Finally we had a break in the heat and it was cool enough at night to put on a pair of jeans. Not sure how it happened, but my favorite jeans had shrunk in my closet over the summer! They were no longer my skinny jeans. They were the I cant breathe in these jeans jeans! I had to do something, and needed a simple plan with support in place to help ensure my success. Like many people, I have tried many programs on my own without much success. This time I needed something that I could sustain for more than three days! Thank goodness, Chuck Urmann came into the picture. Chuck is a health coach with Take Shape for Life, a program that is designed to help you lose weight quickly, safely and easily, while learning how to keep the weight off for the long term. When I met Chuck, I saw his own before and after pictures after being on the program. I couldnt believe it was the same person! I thought, If he has done it, he could help me get back into my skinny jeans! More importantly, Chuck could help me get back to being healthy. Coaches are expensive, I thought. I wanted to lose the summer weight, but could I afford to? What I learned was that his services are free when you place your order through his Web site. The Take Shape for Life Program was very affordable, and Chucks expertise came with the deal! What did I have to lose but my summer weight? As a health coach, Chuck really was my partner. He helped me to place my order, and
32
Natures Pathways | October 2012

said to call him as soon as my order arrived. It took only four days to come to my door, and I couldnt wait to get started! Now that was a first I was looking forward to a diet. Only it wasnt a diet! Take Shape for Life teaches you a lifestyle change, and Chuck was right there with me. My meal replacements came on a Thursday, and Chuck gave me the option to start on Monday or the next day. I chose Friday. What was I thinking? Its the weekend! Chuck reminded me that life is full of weekends, so I jumped in! Overall, the program is easy to follow, and great for someone who is on the road and not always home to prepare meals. Everything is portable. The hardest part was eating all the food because I was never hungry! To keep your metabolism going, you eat every two to three hours. Once I was in the routine, it was easy. I must confess, I wasnt a breakfast eater, and I had to start the day with a small meal. If I was home, I made myself pancakes. If I wasnt home, I had a protein shake or one of the delicious bars that were in my package. After breakfast, I had 4 more replacement meals for the rest of the day. Oh, yes, one of those meals is dessert! Chuck told me it was critical to my success to eat all my meals. He stressed the importance of planning each and every day what to bring with me. Whether at home or out, each day you have a Lean & Green Meal, which consists of a lean cut of meat, and a salad or veggies. Most of the time, I had mine for dinner, and with Chucks help, I knew how to switch it up. Chuck even gave me ideas for dining out. As I said, the program is easy to follow, as are many other programs. The biggest difference

was having Chuck alongside me. We spoke several times the first week, and at least twice per week after that. He was available when I got stuck. He probed and learned I wasnt drinking my eight glasses of water per day. I drank the water and got back on track! Chuck was encouraging, supportive and held me accountable. He knew firsthand what I was going through, and just reminded me what my goals were. He asked me each week where I was with my loss, and if I was on track. Had he not been there to tell me that, I would have thought I was failing. The first week I lost over four pounds. The second week, only one pound. Chuck didnt scold me when I cheated [a few times!]. He told me that was normal. If not for him, I would have given up! The Take Shape For Life program can fit most everyones needs. There are many items that are gluten-free, and they also have a program for those who are vegetarians. So if you have a lot or a little to lose, or just want to be healthier, Chuck Urmann is your guy. So what were my results? After 28 days I lost a total of 11 pounds and 10 inches. I am happy to report that I can fit back into my skinny jeans! This time, with Chucks guidance, I will keep fitting into them. I might even have to go buy a new pair.

what is areola repigmentation? ................................................................................

by Renee may

reola repigmentation is a specialty area of tattooing that requires advanced experience as well as technique. This procedure helps improve the appearance and self-esteem of both women and men who have undergone breast surgery. Areola repigmentation techniques can create an areola after breast reconstruction, minimize the appearance of scars, or restore an areola to a more natural-looking color and shape. Areola repigmentation may also be called areola tattooing, areola micropigmentation, areola pigmentation, areola recoloring or areola simulation.

complex simulation can be achieved with or without a nipple button created by the surgeon.

how areola repigmentation helps people after breast surgery

The areola is part of the human breast in both women and men. It is a circular area of skin around the nipple that is often darker and thicker than the surrounding skin. The areola plays a key role in the aesthetic look of a breast. Since a womans self-image can depend on the appearance of her breasts, a missing areola can be psychologically devastating. A woman can survive breast cancer after undergoing a mastectomy, and she can regain her figure with a breast reconstruction. However, she may not feel complete without an areola. A woman can become emotionally distressed from a scarred areola as well. A mans self-esteem can also be lowered by the appearance of his chest and breasts. Areola tattooing provides the finishing touch after breast surgery. Patients feel the tattooing process helps them during the last part of their recovery to look complete and feel whole and normal again. This is the goal, to do everything possible for those that have gone through so much already, to help them feel normal again.

The color of an areola can be darkened, balanced or enhanced with tattooing. The process helps women who have discolored or lightened areolas after breastfeeding or patients who have had areola graft surgery. Patients with skin discoloration disorders can also benefit from areola tattooing. Also, individuals who have not had breast surgery, but are self-conscious about their areola color or size (too light or too small) may choose this procedure to adjust their appearance.
AreOlA SCAr CAMOUflAGe

Many breast operations require one or more incisions at or around the edge of the areola, which may produce scarring. The most common peri-areolar scars are from breast augmentation or reduction surgeries. A scars appearance can be softened, blended or reduced by tattooing the areola scar using corrective pigment camouflage techniques.

This procedure is for patients who have had breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Cosmetic tattooing techniques and color pigments are used to create the appearance of an areola. For a unilateral mastectomy patient, this process helps the reconstructed breast to match the natural breast. For patients with bilateral breast reconstruction, both areolas are recreated. Areola

heres something great about going out for breakfast during the work week. It kind of gives you that less-stressed, weekend feeling, even if its not. On a recent morning, I chose a great little place on Madisons east side in the Atwood Avenue area: Mermaid Caf. Ive passed by many times, and the scene there with brightly colored outdoor tables filled with people enjoying food and drink has always caught my eye. The Mermaid Caf has been at this location since 2005. Considering the lovely morning, I decided to sit outside. I ordered my caramel latte and began looking over the breakfast and lunch menus. The quiche of the day, which is usually a variation of classic quiche Lorraine, was still baking, so I decided to go with a breakfast sandwich. I chose a sandwich called Oh Mighty Isis, named after Isis, a woman who worked at Mermaid Caf and who created the signature coconut curry aioli that truly makes this sandwich unique. It was served panini style with perfectly toasted bread, fluffy eggs, cheddar cheese, tomato, avocado and the very tasty aioli. The delicious sandwich was just what I needed to get my day off to a wonderful start! All of Mermaid Cafs products come from local vendors, some of whom have farm markets. Needless to say, everything on my sandwich was extremely fresh and colorful. I appreciate their efforts to buy local!

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I tried the homemade chocolate farm cake. I like chocolate anytime of the day, but at breakfast, you cannot go wrong! Farm cake is a mix between a muffin and a cake, and this one was extremely chocolaty and moist. It also had a cream cheese filling with chocolate chips. This particular recipe came from the Ovens of Brittany cookbook. This classic cookbook, which I am proud to own a copy of, has had a great influence on the Mermaid Cafs recipes, as well as those of many other restaurants around the Madison area. The Mermaid Caf opened the bakery four years ago, and after enjoying the farm cake, I am so glad they did! The owner of Mermaid Caf, Lisa Jacobson brings a passion and commitment to local sustainability that stems from her family farm upbringing in Sun Prairie. She also worked two years with REAP where she learned all about food systems. Lisa invites you to stop in for breakfast, lunch or just a quick cup of coffee!

Super foods! what are they? ......................................................................

by Jack a. erb
uper foods? Sounds enticing, to say the least. Lets take a look. Super foods are typically not part of the Standard American Diet, which includes a high percentage of caloric intakes from processed foods, such as:
Refined sugars, including high fructose corn syrup. White flour, white rice and other processed grains. Processed vegetable oils (shortening, margarine, refined oils,

turnip greens, spinach, barley grass and wheat grass.

Alliums

These variations of the onion are good: garlic, onion, leek, chive, scallions and shallots. Alliums contain sulfur compounds that aid in liver detoxification, support the immune system and fight infection, help to lower blood pressure and balance cholesterol levels.

hydrogenated oils).

Much of this food is laced with chemical additives (e.g., pesticides, preservatives, etc.). Super foods, on the other hand, are high in nutrients and low in calories. Basically, what we should be eating! When your body gets the nutrition it needs, you start losing the craving for less nutritious foods. Here are some examples:

Green tea

This super food helps support the vascular blood clotting function, reduces cancer risk and helps maintain cholesterol.

Dark chocolate

berries

Blueberries, bilberries, huckleberries, goji berries, acai berries, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Berries have high ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity). They are also sources of vitamin C and vitamin A. Berries protect the eyes, brain and cardiovascular system and support liver health. The colorful pigments in berries are antioxidants, which are a healthy substance for our bodies.

Some research has linked chocolate consumption to reduced risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Eaten in moderation, dark chocolate is good for your heart and brain, helps control blood sugar and is high in vitamins and minerals.

Other really good super foods

Apples

Another super food with alkalizing properties is the apple. Your body should have a pH level of 7.365 or higher to maintain optimum health and energy levels. Any pH level below 7.0 and you are probably very sick. Stay away from sodas or vitamin drinks; these have pH values around 2.4, which is very acidic. Stomach acid has a pH of 2.4, which is needed to digest your food along with 13 different enzymes. Gatorade also has a pH of 2.4. Drink lots of water and drink alkaline water if you can find it.

Tomatoes, hot peppers, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, yams and winter squashes. Walnuts in particular cool inflammation and improve blood flow. They are a source of good fats. Seeds provide high fiber, vitamin E and monounsaturated fats, which help keep the heart healthy and the body disease-free. Legumes (beans and lentils) are some of the highest plant sources of protein. There are various supplements you can purchase to complement these super foods, but natural foods are always the best. I myself take a combination of both super foods and supplements with my busy schedule. To your good health!

The ins and outs of gas fireplaces ..........................................................

by ernest bingham

f youre thinking about getting one, now is the time to go shopping. If you have one, now is the time to get it tuned up before the cold weather hits. Gas fireplaces can be a real economical source of heat, light and ambience. They can also be troublesome, quirky and just no fun to be around. If you have one of the quirky ones, consider simply trading it up to one that will make you happy. A modern

gas fireplace is a joy to have in the home. Theyre an economical source of heat and they can be beautiful and very dependable. If youre thinking about buying one, here are some things you should know. There are two kinds of gas fireplaces: one that needs electricity to function and one that needs no electricity whatsoever. As a general rule, gas fireplaces that need electricity will not function in a power outage. I tend to recommend a gas fireplace that needs no electricity. Its dependable if you do have a power outage. We tend to shy away from electricity-dependent fireplaces also because their fans are often very noisy. If you have a gas fireplace, take a careful look at it. Does the glass have a hazy appearance? Is there soot on the logs? Does it generally appear dirty? These are good signs that it needs some maintenance. You can clean your own glass, but dont try tuning it. The gas fireplace is just like a small furnace, it needs a specialist to keep it happy. Before you turn it on for this season, check the venting to be sure there are no bird nests at the exit. Gas fireplaces are fairly new on the American market; they began being introduced roughly in the early 80s. They are continuously evolving, not necessarily for the better. The first ones introduced to the United States were by a company called Valor. It is the oldest maker of gas fireplaces in the world. They have been in operation since 1890 in Birmingham, England. Valor has been the pioneer and the author of many firsts in fireplace technology over the years. Virtually all Valor fireplaces can function completely without the need for household electricity. Many fireplace makers have moved away from Valors philosophy of no electric because they think you dont care. I, myself, am a buyer and personally I care. I remember all too well the ice storms and being without heat. We are a small family business; I have dropped many fireplace lines because they dont share my philosophy. If the fireplace cant stand on its own in an emergency, why spend the money? Well, thats my rant for the month. Thank you and God bless.

The five most deadly cancers ..........................................................

ancer has surpassed heart disease as the foremost cause of death for people in North America. A cancer diagnosis can be life-altering. Although there are many successful treatments for cancer, there is no definitive cure. Plus, certain cancers continue to be more ominous than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 100 types of cancer, characterized by their location in the body and abnormal cell growth in that area. Millions of dollars have been raised and spent on cancer research and finding new and innovative methods of treatment. Although the five-year survival rate for those with cancer in the United States has improved considerably over the last three decades, the National Cancer Institute still lists many cancers as the primary killers of many people. Here is the most recent classification of the five cancers that claim the most lives each year.

1. lUNG CANCer: Lung cancer is responsible for more

deaths than any other cancer. Roughly 160,000 people succumb to lung and bronchial-related cancers each year. Although it is the most deadly, it is also the most preventable, as many cases of lung cancer are the result of certain lifestyle choices. Quitting smoking is the single most effective way to reduce your risk of lung cancer. 2. COlOreCTAl CANCer: In 2008, 52,857 Americans died from colorectal cancer, says the CDC. Most cases of colorectal cancer begin with groupings of small, benign cells called polyps that over time become cancerous. Screening is necessary to check for cancer of the colon and rectum, but because they are embarrassed and uncomfortable, many people avoid preventive measures. 3. breAST CANCer: The second most common cancer in women, breast cancer can affect both sexes. It is also the most deadly cancer among women, with roughly 35 percent of the cases in the United States resulting in fatality.

metabolism. This cancer is deadly because it is difficult to detect in its early stages, as it does not always produce symptoms and the cancer tends to progress rapidly. Pancreatic cancer claims around 40,000 lives each year. 5. PrOSTATe CANCer: Prostate cancer is exclusive to men and is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among them, according to the NCI. This type of cancer forms in the prostate, a gland that produces seminal fluid that carries sperm. It is estimated that 28,000 men will die from prostate cancer in 2012. Although many cancers are fatal, survival rates are improving. Thousands of people diagnosed with cancer beat the odds and go on to live healthy, disease-free lives.

Thursdays 6-7 p.m. yamuna Body Rolling for Beginners with laura flanagan Yamuna Body rolling is a revolutionary approach to health and fitness using balls designed exclusively for this practice. It consists of a series of routines using 6 to 10-inch balls. Unlike other ball exercises, YBr goes far beyond random movement and stretch. It allows you to work specific muscles in detail, to create suppleness in tight areas and optimize range of motion. Yamuna Body rolling reeducates muscles and stimulates bone, creating positive, permanent changes in the body. the ball moves along muscles to stretch them, dislodge tension and discomfort, increase blood flow and promote healing. Lying over the ball, you literally roll your body out almost like dough, stretching and elongating your muscles. the YBr routines follow specific sequences that match the bodys own logic and order. starting where each muscle begins, at its origin, you roll toward where it attaches to the point called its insertion. Whether youre young or old, a fitness buff or a couch potato, rolling with a YBr ball can help you feel better, more vibrant, more alive! Youll have a ball toning, strengthening and realigning your body.
