East Village and Lower East Side Bike Friendly Business District
What is a Bike Friendly Business District? A Bike Friendly Business District is a network of bike-friendly businesses, cultural institutions and community organizations committed to encouraging safe bicycling in their district. These bike-friendly community leaders know that a network of bike lanes, bike parking and public bike share stations create vibrant, safe streets that boost local business. Indeed, streets that prioritize biking and walking and include amenities like bike lanes and pedestrian plazas have been proven to boost retail sales by 10 to 25 percent. What makes a business bike-friendly? Participating businesses offer discounts to customers who arrive by bike, advocate for bike infrastructure (like bike lanes and bike parking) and educate their customers and working cyclists on the benefits of safe bicycling. Several businesses also make deliveries and transport goods by cargo bike. Why the East Village and Lower East Side? These neighborhoods are known for their street life and theyre great places to bike! The areas local businesses and arts venues are integral parts of the neighborhoods social fabric, enriching life for residents and visitors. Home to the nations longest protected bike paths, and situated in the heart of CitiBike New Yorks public bike sharing program the East Village and the Lower East Side are some of the best places to ride your bike, take in New Yorks unique sights and sounds, and discover local businesses. What do businesses get for participating? Participating businesses are part of Transportation Alternatives NYC Bike Friendly Business campaign. Transportation Alternatives promotes NYC Bike Friendly Businesses to New Yorks 500,000 daily bicyclists, and to T.A.s network of over 90,000 members and supporters through the programs website, transalt.org/business. Transportation Alternatives also provides free consultations with Bike Friendly Business owners to guide them through installing amenities that attract new audiences of bicycling customers.
