KINDERGARTEN, PRIMARY SCHOOL, SECONDARY SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL 100% BILINGE SECONDARY SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY SCHOOL YEAR 2012-2013 FIRST PERIOD EXAM TYPE A TEACHER: MONSERRAT RODRGUEZ CEVALLOS STUDENTS NAME: GRADE AND GROUP: DATE: LIST NUMBER: POINTS: /40 RESULT:

I. INSTRUCTION: Answer the following questions. (4 points) 1. Describe how Mercator, conic, and planar projections each distort the appearance of Earth's surface. Then choose which map might best represent the United States. Explain your choice.
Sample answer: A Mercator map is useful for areas close to the equator. On a Mercator map, areas far away from the equator appear much larger than they really are. A planar projection distorts landmasses as they get farther away from a center point. A conic projection best displays the Earth's surface at the middle latitudes. Landmasses near the equator and the poles are distorted in a conic map. Because the U S is located in the middle latitudes, a conic map would most likely distort the United States the least.

2. Think about the state you live in as part of a culture region. What do most of the people in your area have in common?
Possible Response: Most of the people in the student's area probably speak the same language, wear similar kinds of clothes, use the same technology, and work in similar kinds of jobs.
