How is Geology related to Engineering? Discuss the scope of application of geological knowledge in the planning and execution of engineering work. Describe common rock forming minerals and their abundance. Also discuss the advantages of study of minerals by physical properties. Distinguish between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks on the basis of origin, structure, texture, composition and utilization. How are unconformities recognized in the field? Add a note on their importance in major civil engineering works. (a) What is an earthquake? How are they caused? Discuss the effects of earthquakes. (b) What is reservoir induced seismicity? Add a detailed note on seismic hazards in India. Explain how vertical electrical sounding data is interpreted using three layer curves, two layer curves and inverse slope method. What are dams?
