Lesson Topic: __Motion__________________ level:_____K_______ Length of lesson: ___5 days_______

Grade

Stage 1 Desired Results

Content Standard(s): SKP2. Students will investigate different types of motion. a. Sort objects into categories according to their motion. (straight, zigzag, round and round, back and forth, fast and slow, and motionless) b. Push, pull, and roll common objects and describe their motions.

Understanding (s)/goals Students will understand: *Objects on Earth move in different ways

Essential Question(s): How do objects move? Why does an object move the way it does? How can you make objects move?

Student objectives (outcomes): Students will be able to: *View an object and state the motion it will take on *Sort objects according to their motion *Be able to decide whether a common object will push, pull, or roll

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): Students will design Other Evidence: an amusement park and draw it on paper. GKIDS assessment on motion The park will have to include a ride for Thumbs up/down for comprehension each type of motion, (push, pull, roll, Pre-assessment straight, zig-zag, round and round, back and forth, fast, slow, and motionless)

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities: Day 1- Teacher will give students the pre-assessment one-on-one. After this has been done the lesson will begin Opening- Teacher will show students a series of objects: a ball, a wagon, a toy lawn mower, a toy

train, etc. The teacher will ask the students what it means to move and the class will come up with a definition of motion. The students will think to themselves about different ways that objects move. Lesson- The students will view the video podcast on motion Closing- The students will go through the objects the teacher presented, pick one and show the class how the object moves. (explain) Day 2- Opening- Students will review what they have learned about motion so far. The students will describe different types of motion Lesson- The students will go on a scavenger hunt in the room. They will search for objects that move different ways. The students will be given 15 minutes to find several different objects. The objects all have to move different ways. At the end of the 15 minutes, the students will come together and share what they have found and how it moves. (apply and empathy, explain) Closing- The students will draw objects they can think of in real life that move round and round, straight, zig-zag, and back and forth. (apply) Day 3-Opening- Students will raise questions about what they still dont understand about motion. Teacher will assess comprehension using thumbs up/down. Teacher will do a quick review of what students do not understand. (self-knowledge) Lesson- Students will view portion of video podcast about ways humans can move objects themselves. Teacher will have a student pull the wagon around the classroom. Students will observe what happens when the wagon is pulled. (wheels go round and round). The teacher will then provide students with a variety of objects that roll. The teacher will tie a string around the objects and have the students experiment by pulling the objects around. The students will decide what the characteristics of objects are that pull easily. (interpretation) Closing- The students will assist the teacher in coming up with objects that can easily be pulled, pushed, and rolled. Day 4-Opening- Students will review real-world examples of objects that move in different ways. Lesson- Teacher will begin explaining the performance task for the unit. The students will be given a large piece of paper and crayons. The students are to design an amusement park. They will draw the different rides on their paper. They must include a ride for each type of motion- round and round, zigzag, straight, back-and-forth. They also must include some sort of activity or ride in which a human is making an object roll, push, and pull. The students will begin working. (apply) Closing- The students will stop working and share their drawings with their table. The students will tell each other one thing they like about each others drawing and one thing they can improve on. (empathy, perspective) Day 5- Opening- Students will share their favorite object that moves and what type of motion it has. Lesson- The students will continue working on their amusement parks. They will finish up with them and begin presenting. The students will present their amusement parks to the entire class. They will have to show each ride and explain how it moves. The teacher will grade each student using the performance task rubric. Closing- Students will share one fact they learned in this unit. Follow-Up ActivitiesActivity 1- Students can go home and create a list of objects in their house that move and how they move. The students can then bring in one object to share during show-and-tell

Activity 2- Students can find an object that moves 2 or more ways (i.e. a merry go round goes both up and down and round and round) to share with the class Activity 3- Students can create an object that moves out of household materials. (for example- create a car out of toilet paper rolls and wheels) Resources: GA DOE Framework Breckenridge, Judy, (1993), Simple Physics Experiments with Everyday Materials Teaching Physical Science with Toys

Pre-Assessment/ GKIDS assessment

1.) Which one of these objects goes round and round? Straight? Zig-zag?

2.) Name an object that rolls? That you can push? That you can pull?

3.) Name an object that goes fast? Slow? That does not move?

Performance Task Rubric 1 Work is messy, unable to understand, no effort put in to be creative Does not include types of motion on the rides Is not able to explain how the ride moves and or is incorrect on all of them 2 Work is legible, but not much creativity involved in the drawing Includes some types of motion but not all Can explain how some of the rides move, may make a few mistakes as to how a ride may move 3 Work is a legible and creative invention Includes all types of motion set out in the directions Can explain correctly how all of the rides move
