In the article Constructing Work-Life Balance and Fatherhood: Mens Framing of the

Meanings of Both Work and Family, John Duckworth and Patrice Buzzanell (2009) explore fathers perceptions of their roles and the specific ways in which they maintain balance between work and personal issues. The ultimate goal of the authors is to show that fatherhood is closely associated with numerous responsibilities, problem-solving skills, and situations. A literature review is presented in the article, as the researchers pay attention to social constructionism and fatherhood together with work-family management. 2 The purpose of the study is to present various aspects of fatherhood and masculinity as an

importance of managing work-family issues. The participants in the study were 18 men who identified themselves as fathers. A small sample size such as this is indicative of the qualitative nature of the implemented methodology. The researchers used the constant comparative technique to analyze the results from the interview and transcription processes thoroughly. 5 Complete researcher involvement was demonstrated during the research process. The

researchers actively participated in every stage of the research process because they were engaged in discussing important themes with the men involved. Some interviewees stated that such immense responsibilities included extended family and diverse communities. Resolution of work-family conflicts occurred in several ways. Half of the participants worked full time, and thus they employed child caregivers. They generally reported that their role as fathers included the huge responsibility of solving various problems. 7 The research methods enhanced the credibility and reliability of the study because the

relevant information was obtained in a highly professional and objective manner. The researchers showed the dynamics operating in fathers specific discourse and practices associated with the work-life balance. The research findings were both confirmable and transferable to a larger population despite the limited size of the sample. The main basis for the trustworthiness of the study is the researchers efforts to discuss important personal accounts of fatherhood rather than generalizing about the research problem. 8 The conclusions presented in this study rang true to me as a reader because the

researchers convinced me of their main arguments. I agree with the description given by the participants that a work-life balance is perceived as a multidimensional negotiation process. The fact that the participants discussed different forms of involvement with their children is indicative of the theoretical and practical implications of the study. It allowed for a greater understanding of better coping mechanisms that can help in reaching a balance between work and family responsibilities. 9 The Results and Discussion sections provided strong conclusions on fatherhood and

fatherhood roles and ideologies. The article is quite instructive because it shares valuable

information about the necessary balance between work and family issues in the lives of fathers. Work and life integration is of crucial importance for maintaining various responsibilities in todays busy world.
