Outline of Topic and Preliminary Project Title My field of research is sustainability with a subtheme in geothermal systems.

My preliminary project title is Geothermal Systems and the Listed Building: A Critical Analysis of Retrofitting.

Aims and Objectives I shall explore the histories of both sustainability and conservation and how, after a time, these movements began to inform and influence each other.

I shall research the national legislative framework concerning both conservation and sustainable development in Ireland.

I shall explore in detail the design principles and technology concerning sustainable geothermal heating systems.

I shall undertake a case study of a locally listed building with which I can analyse the feasibility of integrating a geothermal heating system.

In my conclusions and recommendations I aim to explore what changes may be made to the current legislature concerning both conservation and sustainability

Proposed Methodology

I shall research multiple source materials in order to build up a detailed history of both conservation and sustainability beginning at their earliest origins and explore their progress to the present day as well as the fusion of these two movements.

I shall explore several sources of material such as the internet and published works and the technical guidance documents concerning the areas involved, as well as preparing questionnaires and organising interviews with local parties knowledgeable in the areas of conservation and sustainability.

I shall undertake interviews local conservation officer and the primary conservation architects in the area.

In the case study I shall explore the listed buildings in a local context, examining the protected buildings in the Cork area that have had geothermal systems installed in the last twelve months.

I shall evaluate the data I have accumulated throughout my research and suggest what modifications may be made to the existing legislature that could potentially accommodate an easier coexistence between these two areas of Architecture.
