e-mail from Dan

09/20/12

Heres an excerpt from JKV President and CEO Dan Rexroths weekly e-mail to ALL associates. The full message is attached, if you would like to read the entire thing.

Last week we received results from the All-Associate Survey and shared a summary of the Village-wide results with you. Identifying areas to work on is only the first step, how we attack those issues is just as important. Your involvement is the key. This week or next, you will have a department meeting to review your specific department numbers. To follow up, every department will be submitting an Action Plan by Nov. 15. Please also consider volunteering for the Village-wide Task Force that will meet two to three times in October and November to review Village-wide results and make recommendations. Associate input is critical in developing a truly effective action plan. One of the Village-wide themes you identified in the survey was a desire to know more about the Villages future and how you fit in. I thought in my e-mail this week I would tackle this question. We strive to approach issues with a view for the long-term health and viability of John Knox Village. We could have made decisions that would make us all happy for a few years, but be harmful to the Village in the long-term. Instead, we have chosen to look at the bigger picture. We did make some course corrections, similar to those made by other organizations the past few years. As a result, I am pleased with some early positive financial indicators at the Village the past couple of months; and the second half of this fiscal year looks to be improved over the first half. This fall the leadership staff and board of directors will be having planning sessions in late October and early November. One focus for us will be .

Village Hospice to Shift Missouri Office Location

Ketti Dawson, MS, Village Hospice Director The bank building which houses our Lexington, Mo. office is closing and the building is for sale. With this occurring, we need to evaluate our location of the Hospice office in Lexington. This year, every department has been asked to do their part in helping the Village be fiscally responsible. Keeping that in mind, the decision has been made to move the Lexington office back to the home base in Lees Summit, effective Oct. 1. We will plan to take our time and evaluate in-depth the relocation of a new satellite office in the future. We will continue to serve the Lexington area and all other areas we are currently servicing. To ensure a presence in the community, we will advertise Village Hospice in multiple media venues and be active in community events. We appreciate the team in Lexington and their flexibility to work with the

changes.

by Kim Klockenga, vice president of finance

It is my pleasure to announce the addition of Heath Leuck (pronounced Luke) as the new director of finance. Heath comes to John Knox Village with extensive experience in the audit field, serving clients in the Senior Living industry. The finance team is excited about the experience and potential Heath brings, and we are sure you will enjoy working with him. Please give Heath a warm JKV welcome and share with him the important aspects of your department and job responsibilities. He has already been setting up meetings to get to know the people and the operations of John Knox Village over the past several weeks. One of Heaths first major assignments will be preparing the budget for Fiscal Year 2014, so it is important you share the nuances of your departments business so he has insights needed to prepare a quality budget for FY14.

Getting to Know Heath Leuck

I am pleased to be here and am looking forward to learning the inner workings of John Knox Village and how I can help each of you be as successful as possible in your work for FY13. My personal philosophy: Always lead by example and treat everyone with respect. Out of college, I worked for BKD for five and a half years, providing audits exclusively in the health care industry including audits of other CCRCs (continuing care retirement communities) in the Kansas City area. I also performed audits for nursing homes, skilled care facilities, hospitals and health systems. When I left BKD, I went to work in the treasury department of SCLHS (Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System) for two years, later moving on to CBIZ MHM where I performed audits in the not-for-profit, governmental and for-profit industries. Outside of work, I am the Networking Chair of the local HFMA Chapter (Healthcare Financial Management Association) and am on the finance committee of the homeless shelter reStart (an interfaith ministry with homeless persons).

VCC Census Reaches 300!

by David Mercier, Village Care Center Administrator This is a BIG week at the Village Care Center! As the VCC gets ready to begin the new Resident Centered Staffing model this weekend, we have also hit the 300 mark in daily census. This is a great accomplishment, due to the efforts of a number of staff. Great job, everyone! This large number of residents at the Care Center will present an additional challenge during this transition time, but everyone is stepping up and providing an extraordinary amount of dedication and effort to make this time go as smoothly as possible. I recognize and appreciate this effort. The benefits to both residents and staff will, in the long run, make the challenges we are facing at this time turn out to be very worthwhile.

Combined Responsibilities Result in Greater Efficiency for Risk Management, Public Safety
by Kim Klockenga, vice president of finance As part of our efforts to fill the current opening for director of compliance and to seek out cost savings for the Village, we have reviewed all of the jobs in the risk management department. In evaluating ways to become more efficient, we have decided to decentralize some of this departments responsibilities. We have begun this process by changing the way claims are handled, giving the individual departments a larger role in the claims process. This should improve the procedures by bringing the business units closer to the action and to developing possible solutions. Changes in Responsibility for Mindy Rust In addition, by realigning some duties that were duplicated by administrative assistants in risk management and public safety, we believe effective administrative support can be delivered to both departments by one position instead of two. Therefore, effective immediately, Mindy Rust is now the administrative assistant for risk management and public safety. We currently are working on moving phone numbers and network settings. None of the procedures or contact information for security, dispatch, transportation, or EMS will change. Mindy will remain in the risk manage-ment office, located on the second floor of the Administrative Center.

Getting to Know those We Serve: Happy 107th Birthday!

Leonard Dark of Valley View celebrated his 107th (thats no typo!) by eating barbecue with friends and family at Valley View. In addition to being featured in an article published by the Lees Summit Journal, Leonard received a proclamation from Lees Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads. The proclamation includes a summary of Leonards life and concludes with the statement: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Randall L. Rhoads, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Lee's Summit, do hereby present this proclamation to MR. LEONARD DARK in honor of his 107th birthday and in admiration of his life-long journey filled with wonderful memories of family, friends, day-to-day events and special occasions throughout the years.

Leonard is pictured above with (from left to right) Heather Scott and Linda Franklin of Valley View, Larry Dark, Dan Rexroth, Rodney McBride, (front row) Sharon Woods, Ila Dark and Leonard.

Community Involvement: Piccadilly Gala

Community involvement is an important part of John Knox Villages philosophy. We give back to the communities in which we operate in many ways. One example is the Piccadilly Gala. Each year the Downtown Lees Summit organization holds a fund-raising in The Pavilion. By providing special arrangements for the event to be held at The Pavilion, we help them in their efforts to keep downtown a vital and exciting part of the community. Representing the Village at Piccadilly were: Connie Taylor, resident assistance; Robin Benge, housekeeping; Rhonda Magers and Amy Yesenosky, Village Care Center; and Cathy Reynolds, Sales & Marketing.

Creating and maintaining a culture that embraces the Quality/Integrity Management Plan is a high priority for the Village. All associates receive training and important information about our plan, the Standard, and Code of Conduct to help reinforce this priority. All associates have multiple access points to address problems or concerns about the plan, other policies and procedures or the Code of Conduct. One of ways to address problems or concerns is through a 24-hour confidential HELPLINE. The purpose of the HELPLINE is to provide easy access to report concerns regarding compliance with laws, regulation, policies or the Code of Conduct. You can use the HELPLINE to report any concerns regarding improper or unethical activity such as breach of confidentiality, inaccurate coding or billing, improper care, safety concerns and more. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can affect the body's muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Most workrelated MSDs develop over time and are caused either by the work itself or by the employees' working environment. HEALTH PROBLEMS range from discomfort, minor aches and pains, to more serious medical conditions which require extensive medical care and time off. Reducing the musculoskeletal load of work is part of our 'objective', which helps to create a safer environment. PAIN: Pain is the chief symptom of most musculoskeletal disorders. The pain may be mild or severe, local or widespread. Although pain may be acute and short-lived, as is the case with most injuries, pain may be ongoing with chronic illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis. REPORTING: It is not a good idea to tolerate pain (as we generally tend to ignore minor aches and pains), especially if they show up in the same part of the body over a period of time when doing a certain activity usually associated with repetitive activity. Report pain symptoms to your supervisor and analyze your tasks/

activities to see if there is a trigger that is causing the symptoms. Ignoring pain in the initial stages, could lead to costly medical diagnosis and treatment and to a certain extent irreversible. So finding a solution that leads to musculoskeletal disorders is very important. Talk to your supervisor and/or call Risk Management any time you have issues with your work protocols/processes and remember: DO NOT IGNORE THOSE PAINS.
