BE ORIGINAL. I dont want you to repeat what Ive said already in class. Express your own thoughts and perspectives. There will be nine possible questions to choose from, each focusing on one film. I want you to be prepared, so below are the topics to choose from. KEEP IN MIND YOU STILL HAVE TO WRITE THE ESSAY IN CLASS DURING THE TESTING TIME WITHOUT NOTES. 1. Jaws: Pick a scene, or even a single shot, and analyze it focusing on camera techniques and how they are used to communicate character and tell story; OR - To paraphrase Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, literary critic and author, plots tend to contain one or more of seven basic conflicts. Among these are Man against Man, Man against Nature, Man against Himself, and Man against Society. Apply these to any two characters in Jaws. Which are appropriate to which characters, ands how does this help further the plot? 2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Pick a scene, or even a single shot, and analyze it focusing on camera techniques and how they are used to communicate character and tell story; OR Consider the non-linear story structure of Eternal

Sunshine and how it is appropriate to the theme of the movie; OR Consider Eternal Sunshine as a love story, how it fulfills and violates expectations, and why. 3. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge: Pick a scene, or even a single shot, analyze it focusing on camera techniques and how they are used to communicate character and tell story; OR Consider how the filmmakers recreate a fantasy narrative taking place entirely in a characters head, and what elements of the story in retrospect might tip a viewer off to the twist ending. 4. The Mark of Zorro: Pick a scene, or even a single shot, and analyze it focusing on camera techniques and how they are used to communicate character and tell story; OR Cite comparisons and contrasts with more recent action/adventure or even superhero movies, considering the place of The Mark of Zorro in film and cultural history. 5. Watch or re-watch Nuit Blanche. https://vimeo.com/9078364 http://youtu.be/JVuUwvUUPro and the Making of Featurette http://youtu.be/tuOS_GF9drQ http://vimeo.com/8963350. Consider how technique and fantasy or dream are used to tell a comparatively simple story, once you have determined and defended what the story is. 6. Finish watching La Jette. http://youtu.be/82q77j5xxY8 https://vimeo.com/31209852 Consider the unusual technique, how it impacts the story being told, and how it is appropriate to the story being told. 7. Watch The Birth of A Nation in its entirety. Pick a scene, or even a single shot, and analyze it focusing on camera techniques and how they are used to communicate character and tell story; OR consider the pitfalls for culture and society at large of employing stereotypes for dramatic storytelling. 8. Make up your own question regarding one or a combination of the movies cited in the previous questions, and answer it. 9. Write a brief essay on any silent film you have seen outside of class and other than the ones cited above. Be certain that the essay convinces me you have seen the movie IN ITS ENTIRETY. (And yes, The Artist is eligible, as is Silent Movie (1976) and The Call of Cthulhu (2005) http://www.hulu.com/watch/195976 https://vimeo.com/9405378 http://youtu.be/rd6JxaYKRcw .
