of St.

Johns in Pine Meadow

St. Johns mission is to nurture all people in their spiritual growth, in their Christian education, and in their relationship with God. The Rev. Salin Low, Rector October 2012

BACK TO BUSINESS!
The fall season is clearly upon us, with the kids back in school, fall sports starting up, the 'refreshing' air, and all the summer memories behind us. The fall at St. John's sees the start of church school, the return of the ten o'clock service, welcoming a new Parish Administrator, and the worst looking sides of the church getting a new coat of paint! My favorite season also reminds me so much of what a beautiful place we live in and how much God has provided. As hectic as the fall can be, it is sometimes difficult to place church high enough up on the priority list. This is an exciting time at St. John's, and I do my best to have my son see me place St. John's near the top rung of the ladder. It seems obvious to me to give God the hour or so back every week in return for all that He has done for me. As far as the getting back to business part of the fall, this is what most consider the 'real' start of the church year. As such, the Vestry and Stewardship Committee have started already looking at the budget and financial needs of the church for the upcoming year. Last year, the Vestry, for the first time in my time at St. John's, presented a balanced budget to the parish. Some cuts, some increased time off for the Rector, some fundraising, and a little less outreach than in previous years. But NO withdrawals from endowment. This is a huge step, and one that the Vestry hopes to maintain; but a step that will not come without the continued support of the church members. The theme for this years annual appeal is 'Toward the Tithe'. We will be asking people to consider a 10% increase in their pledge over last year, hopefully bringing them closer to the Biblical standard of the Tithe. We all know stewardship is a journey, and we appreciate that people are at different stages of their journey depending on their individual circumstances. All I am asking is that you prayerfully consider your commitment to our lovely house of God when the pledge card arrives. This year we were able to increase our outreach by the hard work of our Deacon, Denise. The Vestry sees this as a huge part of what we are called on to do, but all this takes a financial commitment. As in previous years, I have my faith to tell me we will make this happen again, and we can continue to grow and thrive at our tiny little spot somewhere between Satan's Kingdom and a Pleasant Valley! Faithfully Yours,

Stan Moraski Annual Appeal Chair 2013

Create your own mite box to collect loose coins. The accumulation of small gifts can make a big difference in the work of the church. Bring your coins to the church anytime to be combined with others gifts and presented at the altar on the first Sunday of the month. The September offering was $130.78. We collect all month so feel free to bring in at any time and bless it on the first Sunday of the month.

Our church school had a very successful Homecoming Sunday with many old friends returning and a few new friends. Please make every effort to have students in class on time, as we will begin class at 10:00AM. All classes are learning parts of the Old Testament this fall. In Oct.: Primary class (located in the parish hall) will hear the stories of Noah and the life of Moses. Intermediate class (located in the addition) will be studying the overarching history of the Old Testament through; Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Joshua continuing with the period of the judges beginning with Deborah. Middle school class and 9th grade class (located in the addition) will also be learning about our ancestors of the Old Testament with a new DVD based curriculum called, re:form. The characters they will focus on are: Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab and Deborah.

PARISH REGISTER
(Broadly Defined)
The register is broadly defined, because there are events in the lives of parishioners and their families which are not recorded in St. Johns register. It is good, however, for us to hear about these events in each others lives. Let the office know about happenings in your own life and in the lives of other parishioners, especially hospitalizations.

Coffee Hour Hosts

10:00 a.m. Service
This is an important part of our ministry of hospitality to visitors, to children, to one another. Coffee supplies other than cream are available in the kitchen. Baked goods are terrific, whether home baked or purchased whatever works for you. A sign-up sheet for the fall is posted in the parish hall. All parishioners who attend the 10 a.m. service are requested to host at least once this fall.

There are also available dates to provide flowers for the front of the church. The sign-up for that ministry is in the narthex. Donating the flowers beautifies our worship and is a way to honor or commemorate loved ones.

Stewardship Annual Appeal

This years theme is Toward the Tithe, and we are asking all parishioners to consider raising their pledge by 10 percent, understanding that each household faces different challenges. Pledge cards will be mailed on October 22. Consider your commitment prayerfully. Commitment Sunday is All Saints Sunday, November 4. It is meaningful to place your card in the offering plate on that day. If you are not able to be there, please mail your card in advance. Together we can keep St. Johns strong!

Church School started the year on September 9. It was good to see the kids back. And of course we topped off the day with a luncheon.

Thanks to Deacon Denises efforts, we participated in Church in the Park (Bushnell) in Hartford on September 15. There was a Eucharist followed by distributing 100 bag lunches prepared by parishioners.

On Sept. 16 we sponsored an Amber Alert session at New Hartford Day to register kids for a police data base. 65 kids were registered. Thanks to all who helped.

Norma Pappalardo discusses with Rose Osborne her plans for rejuvenating the Gill Garden while Stan Moraski puts the finishing touches on painting the rear of the church.

On September 23 we thanked Pat Ward for her 17 years of service to St. Johns. She has retired to spend more time with husband David (on the left) and a grandchild coming in November. Kevin Case presented Pat with a bouquet and a gift from parishioners. Thanks to all.
