Presentation This passive or semi-active quarter car scale model is a demonstrator allowing designers and students to quickly test, implement, and develop various kinds of control strategies, for car dynamics performance studies, allowing comfort and road-holding improvement. Electronic suspension optimization is one of the main challenges in current day automotive issues. This practical workstation has been built to allow designers to control various parameters of the system to improve the comfort and road-handling of the car. This also gives students the opportunity to discover this industrial applications and put into practice various skills at the same time, such as data processing, control systems, real-time embedded systems, and computer sciences. The main objective of the control system developed is to improve the comfort and road-handling of the vehicle by controlling the damper in real-time. Dissected view

System description The proposed system is made of two masses in vertical translation. The upper mass represents the sprung mass (vehicle body, seats, passengers,), whereas the lower mass is the wheel, braking system, suspension arm.... These two masses are linked by a suspension made of a spring and passive damper or semi-active -controllable hydraulic damper-. The scale model also includes various sensors required to control the damper and analyze the achieved performances. The ground vibrations are simulated by a linear brushless motor driven by a programmable controller. A graphical interface allows the user to adjust the ground disturbances parameters, save the measured variables, and specify the parameters of the control strategies. Quarter-car model principle

The quarter-car can be simply modeled by two masses linked to each other by a linear suspension made of a spring and a damper, providing respectively a force proportional to the deflection of the suspension, and proportional to the deflection velocity. The tire can also be modeled by a linear stiffness by neglecting its non-linearities. This simple model can be used to design controllers, by determining directly the most appropriate damping rate c or to study the influence of the various parameters on the behavior of the vehicle.
