Free runners miss out on award
The Ellesmere Port and Cheshire Parkour Collective,
a group of athletes who practice the sport of free
running, have visited a park in London designed
specifcally for their sport.
The group had been nominated by Cheshire West
and Chester Council for the Independent Academic
Research Studies (IARS) Partnership Award and was
shortlisted and invited to London for a special awards ceremony.
With the help of local Councillors Pat Merrick, Lynn Clare, Mark Henesy, Diane
Roberts, Nicole Meardon, Justin Madders, Paul Donovan and Angela Claydon through
their Member Grant Budgets, four members of the group were able to attend the event
and also got the opportunity to visit a purpose-built Parkour facility.
The group have been consulting with local residents on plans to develop a purpose-
built park in Ellesmere Port for the past year.
Parkour Collective member, Craig McNeil, said: We were really happy to be
nominated for this award and even though we didnt win it was a great opportunity to
see how other young people are making a difference in their communities.

We would all like more space in our
homes and with houses in the UK get-
ting smaller, space is at a premium. But
what if there was an afordable way
to create more space in our homes? A
simple solution for all those people fed
up of living among clutter and one that
doesnt require planning permission or
any major structural building work.
For most, the loft is a dark and dingy
place visited seasonally; once to dig
out the Christmas decorations and
then again to bring down the holiday
suitcases. A precarious scramble across
dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing
whats needed then clambering back
past boxes filled with long-forgotten
belongings.
But that dark and dingy place is worth
thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So
shouldnt you be making the most of it?
And thats where More Than Loft
Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded
in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL
specialises in generating space by mak-
ing the loft easily accessible. And thats
all it does. Its not a generic
building company, and its not
jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only
installs loft hatches, ladders,
boarding, lighting and insula-
tion. Its what the company
does all day, every day, using qualified
local installers who are reliable, tidy
and efficient.
The latest MTLL franchisee to open
covers Crewe and Chester and is
run by skilled tradesman, Adam
Shepherd...Our average job is about
290 and only takes a few hours to
complete, says Adam.
And for that, customers get a modern
two section aluminium ladder 50sq
ft of boarding and a light to make the
space safe and secure.
The price customers are quoted is
the price they will pay, with no
additional call out or credit card
charges.
More Than Loft Ladders is al-
ready a trusted name in the north
west with over 2,500 successful instal-
lations, and I really wanted to bring it
here to Cheshire...Its such a great and
cost efective way for people to gain the
extra space they need, added Adam.

WORk has begun to create a new
neighbourhood play facility for the
beneft of local residents on the
Rossmore estate.
The 16-week project will
see amenities for all
ages installed at
Wharf Lane,
including climbing
apparatus, a
slide and a zip
wire. Seating
for parents
will also be
installed.
Funding has
also being
made available to
improve existing, and
create new, footpaths
throughout the surrounding
area, improving access to green
spaces for all.
Local councillor for Rossmore, Pat Merrick,
said: The new facility will not only create a
fantastic new play space for local residents
and their children but will also help to improve
links between Ellesmere Ports green spaces,
creating new routes for walkers and cyclists
to enjoy.
I hope that once complete, residents will
make the most
of
this great new space. There will be lots of
opportunities to get involved with the project
in the future.
The works form part of a larger Council
project to create a Rossmore
Environmental Action Plan
completed with the help of
residents last year.
The plan, which
considers the
quality of outdoor
areas on the
estate including
open spaces, car
parks, grassed
areas, alleys and
communal gardens
will now be used to
target future funding
and help enhance the
area for residents.
The works will include creating
an improved walk through Rother
Wood and extending the areas original
footpaths up to Netherpool Road, giving
access to Rivacre Valley Country Park and
beyond.
The footpath works will form the frst stage of
a wider programme to provide and upgrade
over 50km of multi-user pathways - creating a
new network of green routes around the town.
Local residents will also have the opportunity
to get involved in the project at a bulb planting
day in october.

Time to update the will
Reducing the tax burden on the assets you
wish to leave in your will has an even more
relevant beneft for your family and friends in the
current economic climate.
Te Law Society-commissioned research by
gfK into wills also highlighted that many young
people, those aged between 25 and 34, did not
have an up to date will (84 per cent).
Many people in that age bracket are likely to have
bought a home in the last few years. Tat is a large
asset that should be accounted for in the will, the
research, however, would suggest this is not being
done.
Te research also revealed that 22 per cent of
respondents over 65 did not know if they had
an up to date will, while worryingly 42 per cent
of those widowed, divorced or separated did not
know if they had an in-date will.
Tat research was carried out in October 2007.
it is highly likely that many more people from a
range of age groups will not have an up-to-date
will following the downturn in the economy.
it is not just a loss of income, or drop in value of
other assets which might prompt a change of your
will. even in healthier economic times, buying
property, divorcing or starting a business should
be a signal to update a will.
Making a will should not be seen as a one
of process. it is essential to keep updating it
whenever your circumstances change and could
have an efect on what is left to loved one.
For anyone who does not have a will, now would
be a good time to write one or risk leaving friends,
families or other intended recipients of your assets
with nothing.

Artwork unveiled at Little Sutton station
LOCaL residents and rail passengers
have admired the new artwork at
ellesmere Ports Little Sutton station
at a special afternoon event.
Friends of the station were on hand
to talk about the foral planters and
gardening which has taken place along
with staff from Merseyrail and the 1st
Sutton (Wirral) Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
who came along to show off their station
artwork.
The highlight of the afternoon was
the offcial unveiling of the artwork by
ellesmere Port Mayor, Cllr Pat Merrick
who said: The event was fantastic and i
was extremely happy to offcially unveil
the art work.
This was also a great way for
the scouts to also mark their 80th
anniversary. Well done to everyone
involved.
Rob Smith, Group Scout leader said:
The Scout group was delighted to
get involved in this project with the
youngsters taking their part in producing
the artwork. This will encourage them
to take pride in the station and will be a
legacy for future generations. as a group
we like to travel by train.
Sally Ralston, Corporate Social
Responsibility Manager at Merseyrail
said: The Scouts and their leaders have
worked really hard and their talents are
obvious in the very different art panels
that they have produced. The station
looks excellent and passengers have
been very positive.
Merseyrail welcomes the positive
transformation that art and gardening
can make at our stations well done to
all!
The 1st Sutton (Wirral) Scouts who are
celebrating their 80th anniversary this
year were able to create their art panels
thanks to a members budget grant from
Councillors angela Claydon and Ben
Powell, local ward councillors.
Cllr Claydon whose auntie Tina was
born in the station building said: This
was a marvellous occasion for all the
community in Little Sutton. it was
wonderful to see the young beavers,
cubs and scouts joining in with the older
residents.
The art work produced is excellent,
and refects the history of the village,
and along with the fower beds brightens
up the station. Councillor Powell and i
were delighted to be able to support the
project.
Members Budget Grants of 10,000
are allocated to each Councillor at
the beginning of each fnancial year
and must be used within a ward for
community beneft.
Artwork unveiled at Little Sutton station
ellesmere Port Mayor Councillor Pat Merrick cuts the ribbon to launch the
artwork with talented artists Victoria Fraser-Smyth holding the ribbon on the
left and art student Rachel Collett on the right.

A Chester & Wirral business owner is making the blindingly
obvious claim that window Blinds, Shutters & Curtains have a
big part to play in the fight against rising energy bills over the
coming months as autumn & winter approach.
Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds believes that
homeowners dont recognise the full energy-saving
capabilities of window blinds, shutters & curtains because
they often regard them as more decorative items and
forget they are a great weapon in the fight against heat loss
escaping through windows.
He is keen to point out the importance of closing blinds and
shutters to stop heat escaping through windows, then drawing
your curtains across to make a massive diference to your home.
I know its a very simple message, but one that a lot of homeowners
dont always heed and its
astounding the amount
of heat loss that can be
prevented by diligently
drawing blinds and closing
shutters, said Marc who
owns Apollo Blinds Chester & Wirral (which has a new
showroom in Handbridge Chester).
Blinds and curtains can act as an all-important physical
barrier in preventing heat escaping through windows
and should be drawn at every opportunity during the
winter months.
Marc points to a study done in Edinburgh which used
thermal images of random homes in the city to demonstrate how much heat is lost through windows.
Duette blinds are a modern take on pleated blinds and have a patented double-walled honeycomb
design which allows them to form air pockets that give them energy-saving properties. They can
reduce the amount of heat that escapes through windows by a third during the winter and are also one
of the best blackout blinds on the market, as there are no stitching holes for light to penetrate through.
Then there are shutters which come into their own during the winter months providing privacy and
excellent energy-saving properties. As well as the traditional wooden ones, there is a new collection of
attractive vinyl shutters which are superb at keeping heat in.
While the focus is quite rightly on energy saving, Marc also says that blinds, shutters and curtain look
stunning as well.
As well as performing a vital function, blinds, shutters and curtains also look gorgeous with stunning
fabrics and wood finishes which can set any room of a treat, he said.

BEX
This young all white male cat came to us as a stray. Can you offer him his ideal
home? He is very friendly and loves attention. An experienced cat owner is
needed as he sometimes gets overexcited and will give you a little nip but
usually it is only in play. Because of this we would not consider homing him with
a family with young children
Bex is about two years old he is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV
virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving
companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down
Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect
companion, he is happiest on your knee, or on the newspaper you are trying to
read.

Cats with FIV make ideal indoor companion animals.

Blue is this handsome boy is a bit on the nervous side but then who wouldn't
be after finding himself shut out of his home in the coldest of weather, when
his owner moved out and left him behind.

We are looking for a new loving home for Blue without children or other pets,
where he can take time to settle.

Please ring 0151 355 9813 if you are interested in homing any of these cats and we will arrange a home

Can you give a cat a home?
CASEY
Quiet and gentle girl
Casey is a sweet natured, very gentle and quiet girl. She
has lived with a single lady so we are looking for a fairly
quiet home forher without children, possibly with an
older couple or single person who is athome during the
day, where she can receive lots of attention and fuss
Casey has not been used to going outside as her owner
lived in a third foorfat. So she could be homed as an
indoor pet, or perhaps to somewhere with asafe private
garden where she can get used to going outside if she
wishes,initially under supervision
Ref: H12- 37
SNOWY
A gentle girl, Snowy has come into our care as
her owner could no longer care for her. She re-
centlyhad a litter of kittens but has now been
neutered and micro chipped and hasstarted
her course of vaccinations. We think most
homes would suit her but aswe do not know
how she is with other animals a house with no
other pets may be best
Snowy is about 18 months old
