Properties of Rational Number

The Rational Numbers are closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by nonzero rational numbers. The properties are called closure properties of rational numbers. If 'm' and 'n' are two rational numbers then the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of these rational numbers is also a rational number, then these numbers satisfy the closure law. Lets take an example of addition which satisfies the closure properties, 3+4=7 shows the closure property of real number addition because when we add the Real Numbers to other real numbers the result is also real. This condition is necessary for all other operations like subtraction, multiplication and division. Identity Property of Rational Numbers :- Rational numbers are the numbers which can be expressed in the form x/y, provided y is not equal to zero and x,y are integers. Apart from the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, rational numbers show a specific property which is called identity of Rational Numbers and such numbers are called identity property of rational numbers. There are two types of identity Properties of Rational Numbers which are as follows: 1. Additive identity 2. Multiplicative identity Additive Identity of rational numbers: Additive identity of a rational number is basically a real number which when added to a rational number does not change its value, zero is called the additive identity. Distributive Property of Rational Number ;- Rational numbers are those numbers that can be expressed in the form of p/q, in which 'p' and 'q' both are Integer numbers, where value of 'q' can never be equal to the zero i.e. (q 0). Do you know distributive property of Rational Numbers? This is an important property for applying any particular operation on the rational numbers. The distributive property of rational number is applied on operations like addition and multiplication of the rational numbers. To understand the distributive property of the rational number we have go through some of the examples. For instance: San has two rectangles with same height and he wants to calculate total area of the combined Rectangle. He has two choices to calculate the area, one (3, 5) and other (3, 7): Inverse Property of Rational Numbers :- Before we start with inverse property, let's recall some concepts about the Rational Numbers. Rational numbers are the Ratio of two integers. In other words, we can say that if two integers are stated as a ratio than the resulting number is Rational number. Inverse Property of rational number states that the multiplication of rational number with its inverse is unity that is 1. Inverse of rational number is simply inverting the rational number that is the numerator of the parent number become the denominator of the inverse number and the denominator of the inverse number becomes the numerator of the inverse number. Thus, if we multiply the original rational number with its inverse rational number that the result is always 1. Commutative Property of Rational Numbers :- Rational numbers follow Commutative Property rule, according to which we can say that if we have two Rational Numbers a/b and c/d then addition of that fallows commutative additions. The commutative addition can be represented as a/b +c/d =c/d +a/b.
