Madinatul Ilm Charitable Trust (MICT)

INTRODUCTION: During the first quarter of 2012, MICT continued its work with some of Pakistans most vulnerable communities. Our areas of focus remained ongoing work to help students in need as well as to continue with our support for the victims of floods in Pakistans southern province of Sindh. Additionally, we continue to expand our ongoing work for launching water supply schemes for communities in need. Going forward, we remain dedicated to continuing with these projects. Among new initiatives during the quarter, MICT with support from the UK based Lady Fatemah (AS) Trust (LFT) and the Karachi based Friends Trust hosted our first ever training workshop for 48 teaches from the USWA school system across Pakistans northern areas. This month long activity at our premises in Rawalpindi allowed the teachers to fill their knowledge gaps in areas such as english language, mathematics and sciences.

SUPPORTING THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR

The value of education can never be underestimated for it tackles the root causes of poverty, opening up vast opportunities for economic improvement. Madinatul Ilm Charitable Trust strives to advance impoverished communities through education, and has been involved in funding grants from basic to higher education since 2008. Our beneficiaries have included students undertaking degree program in medicine, pharmacy, engineering, sciences, business and arts. We have established a carefully developed structure to report progress periodically to our donors.

During the first quarter of 2012, in addition to raising funds for students in need, MICT successfully sponsored a month long workshop for the training of 48 teachers from the USWA school system, located across Pakistans northern Gilgit-Baltistan region. This event cost approximately one million Rupees and

was kindly sponsored by the UK based Lady Fatemah (AS) Trust with support from the Karachi based friends trust. Going forward, it is our intention to continue and expand this activity as a matter of high priority. The USWA school system has been of benefit to thousands of students across some of Pakistans most impoverished areas. By improving the skills of the teachers involved with communities in remote areas, MICT hope to improve the quality of education in one of Pakistans most deprived regions. The event saw the participating teachers and their tutors seek a repeat of this exercise on a regular basis in future. Going forward, we aspire to continue this effort.

RESPONSE TO A CONTINUING HUMAN TRAGEDY IN SINDH

This was an unusal year for Pakistan in view of the devastating floods which hit the southern Sindh province. In response during the first quarter of 2012, our staff members and team of volunteers ventured out to the worst calamity stricken areas such as Nawabshah and Badin districts to province emergency assistance such food, shelter and other basic needs to allow the victims to cope with the after affects of the disaster. We continue to monitor conditions on the ground and appeal to our supporters to generously help with what remains a major humanitarian tragedy, though pushed out of Pakistans mainstream media. Our next plans include possibilities ranging from helping peasants in rural Sindh to receive support for planting their next crops as well as food supplies to help them cope with the disaster in the next few months.

Water supply schemes

During the first quarter of 2012, MICT successfully completed a major water supply project at a school south of Islamabad. Sponsored by the Lady Fatemah (AS) Trust under the banner of Bibi Sakina (AS) water supply schemes, the project has helped to provide adequate water to students at the school who belong mainly to impoverished homes. We are presently undertaking two more water supply projects under the Bibi Sakina (AS) water supply scheme and hope to embark on more projects in times to come. For Pakistans many impoverished communities, the acute shortage of water brings about a major challenge for daily lives.

FUTURE PLANS
As we go forward, our aim is to continue with MICTs dedicated commitment to help tackle conditions in crisis hit situations while also building up on our past record in areas of human welfare. Please support our work so that we can widen the scope of our activities for individuals and communities in need.
