De certo modo, as grias e palavres do chins mandarim lembram os seus correspondentes em ingls. Por exemplo, h muitas grias e palavres que envolvem o sexo. Enquanto que muitos insultos e expletivos envolvem a me alheia, a pessoa pode xingar o outro tambm ao insultar seus ancestrais. Outras ofensas em mandarim se do ao tratarmos as pessoas como se no fossem humanas. Outra diferena que no mandarim as palavras derivadas de excremento ou fezes so muito menos usadas nas grias e palavres. E existem poucas contrapartes s blasfmias crists e islmicas. Por ltimo, alguns termos podem ser escritos de diversos modos, devido ao fato da lngua chinesa ter muitos homnimos. Algumas vezes, isto quer dizer que falantes sem grande experincia usam expresses que so muito mais vulgares do que eles se do conta.

Como na gria inglesa, muitos termos de grias chinesas envolvem a genitlia ou outros termos sexuais. Para penis: jb (tambm , G8, GG) = cock (usado j desde a dinastia Yuan) xio dd (lit. "little younger brother") = cock ku xi w = penis (literary) ynjng = penis (cientfico)

As palavras para vagina so mais usadas mais comumente para xingamentos, insultos do que as relacionadas ao penis: b (also B) = cunt shb = stupid person sob = bitch (lit. "lewd cunt") chub = stinking cunt lnb = rotten cunt yndo = vagina (scientific)

Alm das expresses acima, usadas como xingamento direto s mulheres, outros insultos sugerem que elas so prostitutas: chubiozi = sticking whore jinhu = slut (lit. "cheap commodity") sohu = slut (lit. "lewd commodity")

xioji ainda quer dizer "Senhorita" em muitos contexto, mas agora significa tambm prostituta para muitas mulheres jovens, como sugerido por expresses como "" zu xioji ou "" snpi xioji, que se referem a "badgirls" que podem ser tambm prostitutas.

A masturbao masculina tem, no mnimo, vrias expresses vulgares e conta ainda com duas expresses formais/cientficas que se referem masturbao tanto do homem quanto da mulher ( shuyn e zwi): dshuqing (lit. "firing a handgun") = masturbao masculina dfij (lit. "hitting an airplane") = masturbao feminina wdy (lit. "five beating one") = masturbao masculina

"Turtle" is commonly explained to be an insult because a turtle does not know its father. wngb (sometimes wngb) = cuckold; this was an insult as early as the Song dynasty; some argue that the meant "forgetting the eight virtues" wngbdn (sometimes , also wngbgozi) = bastard (literally "turtle egg")

 gu snzi (literally "turtle grandson") = bastard; also gu rzi) dilmozi = to be a cuckold (literally "wear a green hat" supposedly because male brothel workers in the Tang dynasty had to wear green hats) zzhng = bastard (literally, crossbreed; originally racist, it is now sometimes racist and sometimes not) While there are vulgar expressions in English referring to the buttocks or rectum, there are no real equivalents in Mandarin. pgu yn, the expression for rectum, is not vulgar, but it occurs in various curses involving an imperforate anus: jio n shng hizi mi pgu yn = literally, "May your child be born with an imperforate anus"; sometimes is used as an epithet similar to "damned" As in the West, highly sexual women have been feared: hli jng = bitch (overly seductive woman) Occasionally, slang words with a negative connotation are turned around and used positively: w co = amazing (also ) nib = fucking awesome (possibly influenced by the expression chu ni p, which means "to brag") dio (sometimes nio) = cock; this was an insult as long ago as the Jin Dynasty. Now it sometimes also means "cool" or "outrageous", thanks in large part to the pop star Jay Chou Other insults include the word hn, which means "mixed-up" hnzhng = son of a bitch hndn (also , )= son of a bitch hnqi = son of a bitch Perhaps it is the influence of wngbdn, dn ("egg") is used in a number of other insults in addition to hndn
