What Women WantThe
Heart of the Matter
At the end of the day, we believe
that what women truly want is to
have made a difference, to have
mattered in the lives of others.
And so we take this opportuni-
ty to honor a woman who
mattered beyond measure to
us, our mother, who will con-
tinue to influence us and
our family for generations
to come.
From the moment of birth,
when a woman looks into
the eyes of her newborn
and says, You are beautiful.
I love you unconditionally,
there can be no doubting a
mothers bond with her
child. Our mother, who
passed away July 22, 2012, at
the age of 96, exemplified the
strength and power of a
womans determination
to matter in the most
positive ways, nurturing
that bond to her final
days.
Mom led by example. Be
kind; be charitable; take
care of your family; live
each day as if it were
your first (or last). Dont
let material things have
too much merit; the people in your life should matter
more. Live life to the fullest.
We were told that hearing is one of the last senses one
loses. At the end, surrounded by her family, we all got to
tell her how much we love her and that her love can never
be replaced.
She is dearly missed by her five children, 10 grandchildren,
eight great-grandchildren and the many, many lives she
touched. As a great and inspiring love in our lives, we know
she is truly an angel now, as she prepared so well for the
role. Spread your wings and fly, mama. You will always mat-
ter to us.
We love you,
Cathy and Peggy

Streamline that overstuffed make-
up bag and stick to these basics.
Mascara: No matter what your
hair color, use black mascara. It
will define your eyes and make
you appear more wide awake.
Foundation: Instead of applying
it all over, touch up only those
areas where your skin tone
appears uneven.
Concealer: Choose one that is
long wearing or gives medium to
full coverage in a shade thats
close to your skin tone.
Blush: To choose the right color
for a subtle look, find a shade
thats similar to the inside of your
lip. (This works for choosing lip-
stick shades, too).
Lipstick: Try a moisture-rich for-
mula so your lips dont dry out.
Eye Shadow: A neutral shade
acts as a base and will instantly
brighten eyes. Use one with a bit
of sparkle for a more festive look.
Brushes: One or two all-purpose
brushes will work. In most cases a
cotton swab (or a finger) will do.

Returning to
Romantic Times
by Carmella Roche, Villa Tronco
In the heart of Columbias historic down-
town, a hidden nook of romance has been
restored after 30 years, returning a tradition
of very special occasions to a much-loved
restaurant.
Since 1940, Villa Tronco has provided mem-
orable meals in a 19th-century firehouse
that has now been lovingly renovated to
even better reflect its past. New exterior
faades reflect the status of both historic
landmark buildings that house the restau-
rant, thanks to a grant from the City of
Columbia. During its installation, the Tron-
co family members also turned their
attention to restoring historic details with-
in the restaurant itself, replacing the barn
doors, updating the color scheme, the
lighting and dcor, and reinstating the cozy
Hideaway Booth.
The Hideaway Booth was and is once
more an intimate setting whose charm-
ing ambience, complete with wine bottle
chandelier, has inspired couples through-
out the decades to share a splendid date
together, later celebrating anniversaries in
the place where, often, it all began. Since its
re-opening, the Hideaway Booth has
already provided the perfect circum-
stances for several new engagements.
The renaissance of Villa Tronco has been a
thorough project, from the outside in,
including changes to the lunch and dinner
menus to incorporate savory new items
that complement the favorite meals of sev-
eral generations, as originally introduced
by Mama Tronco, reflecting todays empha-
sis on healthy ingredients.
The underlying commitment to long-held
traditions based on excellent cuisine con-
tinues unchanged behind the newly
restored front, right down to the legendary
cheesecake that continues to dominate
the dessert list.
Old-world atmosphere. Nostalgic setting.
Mouth-watering menu. Romance and ren-
aissance in Columbias oldest Italian
restaurant. Welcome to Villa Tronco!

Many homeowners learn the hard way that their
homeowners' insurance doesn't cover property
damage caused by floods. If you live in a potential-
ly affected area which could include everything
from a home on the coast that sees frequent
floods to one downhill from a stream that hasn't
flooded in years you probably should buy a
separate flood insurance policy to cover your
home and contents. Here in the South Carolina
Midlands we have recently seen heavy rains that
have caused floods by water flowing from paved
parking lots and roads. The Five Points Area is a
good example.
You can purchase flood insurance from your bro-
ker or agent through the National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP), which is managed by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Flood
insurance is available to any homeowner who lives
in one of the many NFIP Communities which have
agreed to pass and enforce certain storm water
and flood plain management laws. Fortunately
most, if not all of Columbia, is a NFIP Community.
A flood insurance policy through the NFIP can pro-
vide maximum coverage of $250,000 for property
and $100,000 for contents. (Property and contents
coverage must be purchased separately, even
though they may form part of the same policy.) If
you want additional coverage, you can purchase
excess flood insurance from private insurers. The
average flood insurance policy costs less than
$570 per year, according to the NFIP.
If you buy a home in a designated high-risk flood
zone and get a mortgage loan from a federally reg-
ulated or insured lender, your lender must require
that you purchase flood insurance.
If you live in a zone that's been designated moder-
ate- or low-risk, you don't need to buy flood
insurance for your lender's sake -- but you may
want to do so anyway, especially if your own obser-
vations indicate that the official designation on
your area are out-of-date (a common problem).
According to FEMA, almost 25% of all flood insur-
ance claims come from areas with
low-to-moderate flood risk. The good news is that
you'll qualify for a preferred-risk policy. The premi-
ums for this type of policy start at only $129 per
year (for both property and contents).

COLUMBIA SUMMERVILLE GREENVILLE
A transaction in which the proceeds from the
sale of one security is simultaneously reinvest-
ed into another is sometimes referred to as a
swap. Such transactions are designed to poten-
tially provide benefits to the investor in terms
of income, credit quality, maturity target or call
feature, diversification and tax savings. Keep in
mind that diversification does not guarantee a
profit or protect against a loss in a declining
financial market.
Realizing Gains and Losses
Many individuals have unrealized capital gains
and capital losses in their investment portfolios,
which may be unlocked through a tax swap
transaction. Capital losses can be used to offset
capital gains on a dollar-for-dollar basis. For tax
reporting purposes, you must first net short-
term gains against short-term losses (securities
held for one year or less), and long-term gains
against long-term losses (securities held for
more than a year). Any remaining short- and
long-term gains and losses can be netted
against each other. If net capital losses still
remain, up to $3,000 may be used to offset ordi-
nary income. Any unused capital losses are
carried forward indefinitely.
For example, if you sell an equity position for a
profit, you could offset the resulting capital gain
by selling a fixed income holding for a capital
loss, and use the proceeds to buy a new bond
with a higher coupon. Such a swap may convert
a paper loss from the bond into a real tax saving
on the equity position.
Avoiding the Wash Sale Rule
The Internal Revenue Service requires a taxpay-
er to defer any tax loss generated from the sale
and purchase of substantially identical securi-
ties if the transactions occur within 30 days of
each other (regardless of whether the sale is
before or after the purchase). This is commonly
referred to as a wash sale. Generally, securities
are not considered identical when they have
different issuers, or, for fixed income securities,
where there are substantial differences in either
maturity date or coupon rate. You should con-
sult your tax advisor before making any swap
decision and to determine whether a sale will
be considered a wash sale.
Investment Considerations
As with all investments, equity and fixed
income securities have inherent risks which you
should consider before investing. These include
equity market risk, interest rate risk, credit risk,
reinvestment risk and call risk. In particular,
should you sell your security in the secondary
market, the price you receive may be more or
less than your original purchase price or matu-
rity value. In addition, any swap should always
be considered in relation to your financial
objectives and goals, and you should consider
any transaction costs involved.
Investment Goals and Objectives
Tax swapping can be an important tool in man-
aging your investment portfolio. As the
financial markets and your financial goals and
circumstances change, the investments in your
portfolio should be adjusted accordingly. Tax
swaps are one way you can effect these adjust-
ments. You should consider annual (at a
minimum) portfolio reviews and maintenance
as a must for efficient and effective investing.
Your Financial Advisor can work with you to
identify possible bond or stock swap opportu-
nities in your portfolio.

Healthy Savory
Snacking!
Many of us go through the day-to-day course
of life experiencing the ups and downs of
fatigue, sleep problems, mood irritability, mus-
cle loss, joint aches, low libido and, of course,
hot flashes. For many individuals these prob-
lems may be hormone related. Being
hormonally balanced, however, can allow an
individual to maintain an active, healthy
lifestyle.
Bio-identical hormone replacement treat-
ment (BHRT) has been in existence since the
1930s and has gained popularity, given the
controversies of commercial hormone
replacement therapy and its serious side
effects. BHRT is plant-derived from natural
sources and chemically changed in a laborato-
ry until biologically equivalent to what your
body would produce. It is customized for each
individual based on lab levels of hormones.
BHRT treatment comes in different forms.
These include transdermal (i.e., creams), oral,
injectable and subcutaneous (under the skin).
Subcutaneous is the most physiological type
and gives you hormone release when you
need it, eliminating the roller-coaster effect
that some other routes of administration give.
Also, this route bypasses the liver and may
cause fewer side effects. The overall result
means that many of the symptoms relating to
hormonal imbalance are now significantly
improved.
Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, owner of Midlands Medical
Wellness Center, is a Sotto Pelle certified physi-
cian in BHRT. During the office consultation,
her patients get to discuss their individual
case with a board-certified physician who is
knowledgeable and able to answer questions
regarding treatment. Any procedures are also
performed by a physician.
The professionals at Midlands Medical Well-
ness Center care about our patients and do
not require an annual contract or monthly fee.

Imagine a machine that can take real-time, 3-D,
HD images of the inside of your body during
surgery. Doctors can see exactly whats going
on inside of you and make sure every step is
correct throughout the surgical procedure. You
probably wouldnt want to have surgery with-
out it. And now you dont have to.
Lexington Medical Center is the first hospital in
the Midlands with the technologically
advanced O-Arm, a new imaging system for
spinal surgery.
The O-Arm is a machine placed around a
patient on the operating table. Before surgery,
doctors use the O-Arm to capture images of
the patient that help them develop a precise
surgical guide. During surgery, the O-Arm
images allow neurosurgeons to confirm prop-
er placement of instrumentation. After
implants are placed, neurosurgeons use the O-
Arm again to confirm correct placement of
instruments in the spine and address anything
further that needs to be done. Images are dis-
played on a large, digital flat screen at a view
station next to the operating table.
Before O-Arm technology, patients would have
an MRI or CT scan before surgery and doctors
would use 1- or 2-dimensional images to guide
them. They would place instruments and
implants by using their best educated guess
based on standard anatomy. But in back sur-
gery, doctors are working through a small
opening and it can be difficult to know where
you are in the spine. Margins of error are mil-
limeters and implants must be placed with
a great deal of accuracy.
Manufactured by Medtronic, the O-Arm
improves safety for surgeons and staff mem-
bers, lowers the chance of revision surgeries
and can enhance patient outcomes. Spinal
problems can be chronic and debilitating. The
O-Arm gives patients a great opportunity for

Its your involvement that helps
researchers to ultimately uncover better
ways to treat, prevent, diagnose and
understand human disease. Before you,
there were hundreds of thousands of
other people who participated in clinical
trials that give you the ability to have the
medications that we have today. Janet, a
healthy volunteer in a hormonal changes
at midlife study, stated participating in
this clinical trial gave me some insights
into how quality clinical research is done.
It made me feel part of a larger effort to
help women who experience severe diffi-
culties with this phase of life.
Clinical trials cant happen without
patients its just that simple. What
makes clinical trials possible are people
who volunteer to help.
SC Clinical Research grew from the shared
goals of the physician partners at Colum-
bia Women's Healthcare, who understood
that progress in patient care could be
advanced through controlled clinical tri-
als. Clinical research provides a way in
which the physicians and pharmaceutical
companies with resources for treatment,
can work together, allowing for the better-
ment of health care delivery today, as well
as into the future. All clinical trials at SC
Clinical Research are conducted under the
close supervision of physician investiga-
tors. Additionally, the clinical trials are
coordinated by a highly trained staff. All of
our coordinators are certified by the Asso-
ciation of Clinical Research Professionals
(ACRP).
Clinical research is necessary to bring safe
and effective new drugs to the market for
public use. Your decision to participate
may change your life.
Presently we are accepting volunteers
for the following studies:
Fibroids with anemia
Ovarian Mass
Irritable bowel (2)
Vaginal infection
Painful periods
We are always adding new studies,
so feel free to call our office at 803-
988-1438 or visit our web site for
information. Free medicine and pay-
ment may be given to participants.

Why Should I Participate in a Clinical Trial?
In short, the answer is Yes. Yet the question
really is: Do you want to see a change?
Regardless of our age or gender, if we want
our skin to look its best we have to take care
of it. A facial does for our skin what a month
of exercise and good nutrition does for our
body noticeably improve its look and feel.
Through exfoliation, deep-cleansing of the
pores, stimulating improved circulation and
use of professional-strength products,
licensed estheticians can make a lot of
progress toward improving our skin in a sin-
gle session. Like a personal trainer, she has
experience, techniques, products and equip-
ment that cannot be replicated at home.
While a month at the gym will achieve great
results (as will a facial), if you stop exercising
and eating well, your body will start heading
back to its previous condition. Youre still
better off than you would have been with-
out that month of conditioning, but if you
keep up the program, you will continue to
improve your appearance and your health.
Likewise, regular facials (especially with an
active home-care regimen) will help prevent
breakouts, keep your surface cells newer and
healthier, and thereby ensure that your skin
looks its very best. Your esthetician can rec-
ommend the optimal frequency for your
particular skin it will vary from person to
person.
If you would like to see a change in some
facet of your skin whether its less acne,
better hydration, fewer lines, reduction in
sun damage, etc. indicate it to your
esthetician of choice so she can act as your
partner in achieving your goals. If you truly
want to see a difference in your skin, you will
have to participate in taking care of it.

skin what a month of
exercise and good
nutrition does for our
body

Did you know?
Brain fitness has basic principles:
variety and curiosity. When anything
you do becomes second nature, you
need to make a change. Curiosity
about the world around you will
keep your brain working fast and
efficiently. Here are some ideas to
help attain mental fitness.
Play Games: Sudoko, crosswords
and electronic games can all
improve your brains speed and
memory. Youll get the most bene-
fit by doing these games a little bit
every day 15 minutes or so, not
hours.
Learn a New Skill: This works mul-
tiple areas of the brain. Your
memory comes into play, you learn
new movements and you associ-
ate things differently.
Make Simple Changes: The more
something is second nature, the
less our brains have to work to do
it. To really help your brain stay
young, challenge it. Change routes
to the grocery store, use your
opposite hand to open doors and
eat dessert first. All this will force
your brain to wake up from habits
and pay attention again.

Sometime in our lifetime, we will all be
touched by cancer, be it ourselves, a family
member or a friend. Peggy and I made this
bracelet for our family members. Each bead
stands for a word that helps cope with
this terrible disease. When we wore them,
people inquired about them and asked if
they could purchase one. We thought about
it and thought why not there is strength
in numbers and we would like to donate a
portion of the sales to cancer research. If
you are interested in owning one of these
bracelets, please email jakeannie@aol.com
