he Orwellian Eye is already upon us. New York Citys countless surveillance cameras are in full force, watching our every move. What has long been the topic of debate for conspiracy theorists may actually be a reality. Is the government really spying on us? In George Orwells 1984, he peers into our world today. And now, its all possible thanks to technology that has already been developed by Abraxis and Tripwire. Surveillance cameras have been installed all over American cities in the United States. One movie comes to mind: Minority Report. In fact, facial recognition technology has been ahead of our time for years. But now the laws that protect Americans are at peril. If only Orwell were alive today, he would lambast the government. So dont miss our Tripwire feature, which conceals the unique technology that can detect patterns of behavior indicative of pre-operational planning, thwarting potential terrorist threats and attacks before they happen. Meanwhile, we are also looking at the pension crisis in America

with an exclusive report with Eric Smith, CEO of Consulting Services Support Corporation. The report will cover new patent strategies for manager selection and performance monitoring processes that many legal experts believe will not only increase the chances of improved investment performance, but will also become the next fiduciary standard for how managers are selected and their ongoing performance is monitored by pension plans of all types. Whats in store for the fall of 2012? Is there is a way to reverse the current pension crisis. Take a close look at The Growing Appetite of M & A in the Private Sector; its definitely an eyeopener for our readers.

Could There Really Be a Strategy That All Sides Could Agree On?
Few issues appear more divisive today than those caused by the pervasive underfunding of defined benefit retirement plans, especially public plans those retirement plans offered to employees by state and local governments. And, between these two diametrically opposed positions there appears to be no common ground only winners and losers in an apparent all or nothing game in which no side really wins.

TRAP WIRE
CAUGHT IN THE WEB
O
n September 11, 2001, terrorists violated Americas security in the most malicious manner possible. After US intelligence agencies failed to effectively communicate and prevent the attack by connecting the more obvious dots, security reform became an imperative and huge advancements have taken effect to analyze suspicious activity more effectively. Since the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. government has spent billions of dollars to ensure the security of its citizens but have they gone too far? Late in December of 2011, the incognito hacktivist group, Anonymous, broke into the web servers of Strategic Forecasting, Inc. (commonly referred to as Stratfor) a private, global intelligence analysis company based in Austin, TX, stealing corporate email, along with other data such as credit card numbers. Some of these emails were sent to the international whistleblowing organization, WikiLeaks directed by the now infamous Julian Assange who started publishing them in 2012. WikiLeaks started a gradual public exposure of the emails, claiming to have close to five million emails hacked from Stratfor. As a result of Stratfors exposure, a controversial security company called TrapWire, Inc., selling security software of the same name, was also pushed into the limelight. According to an RT.com report, TrapWire is the brain-child of a furtive security intelligence company called Abraxas Applications, Inc., headquartered in Northern Virginia. The recent expos has thrown both TrapWire and Abraxas into the media, shedding light on the latter organizations brow-raising membership and controversial surveillance tactics.

What has long been the topic of debate for conspiracy theorists may actually be a reality. Is the government really spying on us?
Abraxas employees include ex-CIA members and security officials boasting strong ties to the federal governments intelligence community, Defense Department and Department of Homeland Security. While the company offers clients a slew of services including data collection, fraud investigation, competitive market intelligence, and political, economic and security assessment other, more sophisticated services have been reportedly used by Abraxas and TrapWire. The private intelligence firm works hand-in-hand with citizen suspicion reporting programs such as See Something, Say Something in New York and Las Vegas, as well as iWatch in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. These reports are analyzed, compared with suspicious reports from other cities and then forwarded to law enforcement agencies, including to Department of Homeland Securitys fusion centers. These tactics have enabled intelligence agencies to collaborate and effectively communicate the development of a threat to the nations security. TrapWires official website claims its unique technology can detect patterns of behavior indicative of preoperational planning, thwarting potential terrorist threats and attacks. The companys intelligence-gathering capabilities, through audio and video surveillance, are perhaps more savvy than one may think. In internal emails recently disclosed by WikiLeaks, Fred Burton, Stratfors Vice President of Intelligence, shared that the program has the technology to track suspects through the use of modern facial recognition software via CCTV cameras installed in major cities from Las Vegas to Washington, D.C.

THE SUIT MAGAZINE p.7

Anonymous, who initially released the emails, claims that TrapWire has access to virtually all CCTV cameras with Internet capabilities. The online pirate also referred to TrapWire as an electric brain, claiming that the companys methods were monstrous and Orwellian. Other reports that could not be verified concluded that TrapWires system may also be able to access stoplight cameras on city streets, capturing a combination of suspect location, drivers license information and facial recognition. The data can then be fused with other personal information such as credit card history and even social network activity, as it is processed through the companys threat assessment system. In a recent press report, TrapWire claimed the software is only used for preventative anti-terror security measures and that no civilian personal information is recorded in their system. Some are skeptical. Claims have been made that the companys board of ex-CIA officials illegally collaborate with the CIA to spy on citizens and that TrapWires tactics, as an invasion of privacy, negate the Fourth Amendment. So, are TrapWires tactics jeopardizing our constitutional freedoms? In an exclusive interview with The Suit, attorney and political powerhouse Anthony Difruscia addressed some concerns. This TrapWire concept is really walking a gray line. I think it (surveillance) has to be regulated and I believe that before you start shooting cameras a court should approve or disapprove of it, said Difruscia. I think people have to be paying more attention to the personal right of privacy, he added. Difruscia noted that while it is not required, it would be proper to put a sign up to notify pedestrians in a public area that is being monitored. Anti-terrorist surveillance and threat prevention are for the greater good of the people. But how far can security companies go to reach that goal? If its (TrapWire) in the private neighborhoods there is no real public good argument that you can come up with. I think its improper to do it in the neighborhoods as opposed to a high visibility street like Wall Street, Difruscia told The Suit. Besides cloaking itself in the obvious secrecy of an intelligence firm, the TrapWire develop-

Photo courtesy of the New York Police Departmen

ment is shrouded in mystery and mayhem. A short time after WikiLeaks posted the hacked emails, the notorious whistle-blowers website was paralyzed by DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. The attacks, flooding WikiLeaks servers with over 40 gigabytes of traffic per second, have been attributed to AntiLeaks an online group condemning Assange and his tactics. TrapWires website also removed information about its clients from their website after RT.com published its initial report in August 2012. The New York City Police Department has been scrutinized after it was reported that they deployed TrapWires technology in city streets and subways. In a leaked email from 2011, Stratfors Burton wrote in regard to NYPDs counter-terrorism efforts, Note their TrapWire intuitive video surveillance capabilities. NYPD has done what no US Govt. Agency has been able to do in the CT (counter-terrorism) arena. Others point to the NYPDs questionable surveillance tactics on Muslims in the New York and New Jersey areas, as it poses possible links to TrapWire technology. Representatives from both NYPD and Abraxas refused to comment on the inquiries due to the sensitivity of the issue. Aside from our obvious discomfort at having law enforcement and private intelligence agencies possibly watching our every move, this use of surveillance sheds light on a separate issue. If, in fact, TrapWire is em-

ployed by the federal government, it raises questions about government spending. Should Uncle Sam be funneling sorely needed taxpayer dollars back into efforts to spy on them (meaning us) or should a more practical and focused approach toward monitoring potential cells and terrorist threats be used? In a public poll of this development, The Suit asked citizens of New York how they felt about the littleknown intelligence company potentially spying on New Yorkers. Over 30% said they had no problem with law enforcement taking a gloves off approach and using every possible measure to thwart terrorist activities, while 100% expressed concerns about personal information being used for marketing purposes. In todays age of information, knowledge is power. Thanks to whistle-blowing groups such as WikiLeaks and Anonymous, diplomatic intelligence as well as government and corporate secrets have become public knowledge, as they come under the proverbial microscope. This can be harmful, and other means need to be implemented to ensure transparency within the socioeconomic and political spectrum. We cannot afford another 9/11. At the same time, appropriate action needs to be put in place to assure both the security of Americans and their confidence in government.

Middle Market
The Growing Appetite of M & A in the Private Sector

EMERGENCE of the

hen mergers & acquisitions professionals flock to invest in something big, the usual culprits are the corporate barons, CEOs and big boys with big stakes in the game the IBMs, the DuPonts, the Lockheed Martins who show up in the boardroom to slurp up lucrative deals. One company, however, has built a rock-solid group specifically empowering the small-to-mid-size business professional. Today, the Alliance of Merger and Acquisition Advisors (AM&AA) is blazing a new trail, and it is one that may mean all the difference to Americas economic success or failure. The Alliance of Mergers and Acquisition Alliance (AM&AA) is the leading association and credentialing body for 870 + middle market M&A professionals in 18 countries. Essentially they provide certification, education and other transaction support to Mergers and Acquisition professionals who primarily deal with middle marketscompanies ranging from $5 to $500 million in transaction value. M&A professionals are different from business valuation experts. M&As are experts at real market valuation, while the traditional valuation experts only work in theoretical values. The middle market sector is very large and extremely fragmented, says Michael Nall, Founder and CEO of AM&AA. We help M&A professionals to earn and learn together. Its a community of practice among independents for skills that arent taught in business school. M & A really centers around public to public transactions, and with growing interest in private companies, theres an extraordinary appetite for training and resources in this overlooked sector. A great deal of market research, including reports from Pepperdine and the Edward Lowe Foundation, conclude that Americas best future is with this underserved, overlooked large middle market. And of course, its not just in U.S., says Nall. When you look at middle markets in Germany and other interests around the world, theres a lot of middle market interest everywhere.

We help M&A professionals to earn and learn together. Its a community of practice among independents for the skills that arent taught in business school.
- Michael Nall

In the 1950s, investors believed that if a company was successful, it would go public. Now with the emergence of private equity as an asset class, and the large number of baby boomers that own these private companies who need to form some transition and succession plan, there really is a chaotic sort of state out there because most of the 300,000 U.S. private companies with valuations of $5500 million dont know what their business is worth. This is where AM&AA comes in, says Nall. Additionally, Nall says that minority companies are a growth sector in the M&A middle markets, representing over a trillion dollars in revenue, and they are hungry for AM&AAs services as well. AM&AA doesnt take on any projects themselves. Their members, (CPAs, bankers, attorneys), select projects based on one factor: Durability. If its a marketable project and can be successfully completed, our members take it on, says Nall. Weve found that 90% of companies arent ready for M&A, and those that think they are, inevitably fail2/3rds is the current statistic. Our members help businesses improve profitability, build up management teams and fine-tune business processes to increase value. Congress has recently defined an emerging growth

company (middle market) as a company with sales up to a billion. Were really focused on the lower markets, says Nall. Were thrilled with what Congress has done with the new Jobs Act. It has jump started our countries business startups, provided easier access to capital, and has made it an easier IPO on-ramp for private companies. Everyone in Washington sees that the countrys economic prosperity really relies on the success of the middle market sector, and thats why theyve bumped up the category to a billion from 500-million. Nall adds that during the economic downturn, companies were being sold at inflated multiples to earnings, and are just now, slowly getting back to strong revenues and profitability.

Getting you Locally on the Front Page

How to become a Marketing 2.0 Company
Each time a new communications tool is developed, the world of marketing adapts and uses it. The Internet has stepped up the pace and taken this evolution to a whole new level, allowing businesses to routinely connect with potential customers all around the world and now, even the ones living just around the corner. I think the most important thing when it comes to marketing is taking advantage of Google products and services, said Michael Beaudry, owner of TEG Business Consulting. The first thing I tell most people is to have a Google Places listing, because 93% of searches are done on Google. Google Places is a free tool connecting searchers to businesses in their area. If someone in the same town searches on a topic related to a company, then that companys listing shows up near the top of the search, greatly increasing the odds that local customers will choose to buy from it. Its an instant way to get you locally on the front page, Beaudry said. TEG Business Consulting helps companies set up and develop an Internet presence with a business website, by wendy connick social media and Internet marketing. TEG also set up text message marketing campaigns, which Beaudry believes will be the next big development in marketing. Its taking a lot longer in the United States than it did in other countries overseas, but coupons, bank notices, reminders, and things like that are going to start coming via text message, he said.

Asset Allocation: The Art of Not Putting all your Eggs in One Basket Asset allocation is the process of spreading investments among different asset classes such as stocks, bonds and cash. It takes time, planning and experience. Different asset classes react in different ways to ever-changing market conditions, and wise asset allocation can help individuals weather market gyrations, increasing their positions for better overall returns. Oklahoma City-based Asset Services Company consists of a unique team of investment advisors they call themselves investment architects with a focus on prudent asset allocation strategies used to help their growing and affluent client base achieve financial goals. Clients, mostly ultra-high net worth families, founda-

tions, endowments and corporations, are primarily situated in the Oklahoma, Texas, East and Gulf Coast regions. Founded by Dan Junkin in 1985, son Peter now mans the helm. We take a different approach to each client. We spend a great deal of time with them making sure we know who they are, what they are looking for and ultimately what they need. We look at risk tolerance and time frame. Setting up a workable, appropriate and fruitful asset allocation portfolio is not a short process, Junkin says with conviction. As a company, ASC takes a long-term approach to investing, instead of worrying too much about the day-today swings in the stock market. The fact the firm didnt lose any clients during the recent market crash is a testament to Asset Services commitment and prowess. Asset allocation, Junkin says, is the most important aspect of a clients investment portfolio. Simply said, not putting all your eggs in one basket can help keep your nest egg from getting fried.

Growing Demands for Capitalization

How Mann Capital Company Prepares for a New and Changing Growth Economy
pure growth investments in companies where all we need is break-even profitability. We can invest in under-performing companies. We even have access to certified minority capital. We also like MBOs (Management Buyouts) and pre-IPO liquidity events. Exit strategies are critical for Mann Capital, explains Mann. We need to have some horizon on when well be able to exit and provide our investors with a return on their capital. We have more flexibility than most. Our capital is a little bit longer term, and we have an advantage from the traditional investment banker in that we provide a very quiet transaction where entrepreneurs can get something done seamlessly, so that their employees arent upset. During the economic downturn, Mann Capital focused much more on efficiency. If you look at the average company we talk to, they were down 20-30% of their revenues and that obviously affected their bottom line. So, that had a huge impact on values in the market. Business really slowed down for us. Thats kind of the bread and butter of the business. If valuations are down, revenues are down and there are not very many people who need our services and our capital. So we got much more efficient, and took that opportunity

hort-term doldrums aside, the worlds corporations are regaining strength, poising themselves for strong growth as the global economy recovers. With healthy cash balances building, real longterm interest rates low and capital investment companies standing at the ready, developing economies continue to pick up the pace, and the prognosis for companies that can tap into that growth over the next decade looks very promising. Mann Capital Company is one such capital investment firm hungry for an economic rebound. Established in 1992, and formed for the sole purpose of diversifying the Mann family holdings away from traditional real estate and publicly traded securities into alternative investments, their investment strategies focus on added crafted solutions for private company shareholders. Originally handling investmentgrade triple-net leased investment and industrial properties for corporate clients, Robert Mann, CEO of Mann Capital Company, now takes on projects that specialize in recapitalization of private companies to provide shareholder liquidity events as well as growth capital. In essence, were second stage investors, says Mann. So a marquee deal for us is a company with a three-year track record of growing revenues and stable profitability. Typically, those companies operate with a 30% gross profit margin and 10% EBITDA. Revenues will range anywhere from $20 million to $500 million. That being said, we have a lot of flexibility. We can make

to look at all of our processes from the ground up, to retool everything, says Mann. The prospect for an economic growth rebound and increased global consumption, however, can generate strains on the global financial system, particularly global savings. Couple that with the long-feared change in long-term capital gains tax rates, and youve got some significant drivers in the market, says Mann. Its important for us to position ourselves in preparation for these economic changes. Improved efficiencies and wise investments will drive Mann Capital going forward.

Consulting with a patriotic commitment

VetsAmerica makes the Top Five of Washingtons Fastest Growing Companies
t takes a lot of effort to grow a company. It takes even more effort to make a new company profitable let alone wildly profitable during an economic downturn. Such a company is VetsAmerica, founded in 2002 by former Navy officer John Collins, and certified as a service-disabled veteran-owned business by the Federal government. They provide IT solutions to Federal clients. This year, VetsAmerica was named to the Washington Fast 50 list for a second time, rising to #4 from #27, after tripling its annual revenue to over $16 million. Hampered in the beginning by a non-compete agreement with his former company, Collins efforts started to take off in 2007 when VetsAmerica began working on Federal contracts he won. The companys work quickly became monopolized by the Veterans Administration (VA) which took over and became the biggest user . . . so we ended up in 2011 with 95 percent of our revenues from the VA, Collins said in a 2012 interview with Washington Technology. Collins feels the VA is a good fit, given the companys mission of service that is clientfocused, with patriotic commitment. The first commercial contract with the VA was for enabling all their public-facing websites with e-authentication techniques, said Collins, noting that there were 28 major websites to enable. VetsAmerica also earned high praise with their intuitive dashboard for the VAs HR department, aggregating several data streams for a real-time view across the organization, but their biggest projects to date have been in the area of Help Desk/Call Center operations and management. VetsAmerica maintains the VAs PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) Help Desk, managing certificates and public keys for all types of encryption. They also maintain the VAs Learning University helpdesk (VALU), earning high marks for persevering despite a system migration in mid-contract. VetsAmerica also built the prototype for using virtualization software to integrate the VAs call centers, regardless of geographic location. The company combines traditional help desk techniques

with information sharing and cloud management, enabling VA call center employees to address, track and resolve trouble tickets in real time, significantly increasing efficiency and decreasing customer frustration. Offering a wide range of services including program management, customer service management, information security, software development and telecommunications VetsAmerica can be a one-stop shop for any combination of those needs. One big challenge Collins noted is in attracting and keeping the people needed to support their core competencies. He is confident in the future, however, noting that people are what has contributed to VetsAmericas success, We have incredible talent.

The first commercial contract with the VA was for enabling all their public-facing websites with e-authentication techniques.

Weathering Economic Perils

In this business, theres no such words such as safety or guarantee. --Glen Dahlke

www.northstarwealthpartners.com

len Chip Dahlke, CEO of Dahlke and Associates, has been in the financial industry for over 35 years. Also Director of Fee Based Investing for the Connecticut-based firm Northstar Wealth Partners www. nstarwp.com , as well as a financial writer for livingtrustnetwork.com, Dahlke offers clients the benefit of his experience and the knowledge needed for successful investing. Dahlke and Associates specialize in investment advisory services, offering financial guidance in a number of areas. From trust funds and securities to bonds, treasury bills, 401(k)s, IRAs, taxes, estate and college planning and even insurance the company strategy is to help clients manage assets for today while securing finances for tomorrow. Im constantly tinkering with my portfolios and one goal is to squeeze a little more return and a little less volatility, said Dahlke. When he formed the investment wealth management firm in 1990, Dahlke was fully aware he would be grappling with the tumultuous entity known as the financial market and equipped himself with the tools necessary to serve his clients. In this business, theres no such word as safety or guarantee, he said with a laugh. The year 2000 began with what Dahlke calls the Market Meltdown. Due to economic uncertainty, specifically from 20062008, Dahlke redoubled his efforts to weather the economic storm. The market climate had changed, he explained. At that point I

started to retool portfolios that I work on, to cut volatility, he said, adding, I think we came through in pretty good shape. Along with the vicissitudes of the recent economic downturn, big Wall Street investment firms continue to face a tarnished image. Its going to take a while for the public images of these (Wall Street) firms to turn around, said Dahlke. Smaller independent, companies, like Northstar, really gained in this downturn from the fact that the public does not trust a lot of the big firms anymore, he explained. This development has allowed smaller and mid-sized firms to capitalize on the market, building a foundation with an influx of new clients. When asked about green investing, Dahlke explained the dynamics of the recent trend. Green investing is looking for companies and products (to invest in) that are earth-friendly. This could be an alternative energy, such as wind or solar, but also any industry that has been trying to create an innovative, earth-friendly product, he said. Investors can promote environmental consciousness by investing in businesses that practice sustainable manufacturing, sell products with a positive influence on the environment, or which reduce reliance on nonrenewable resources. The Obama Administration was looking to kick-start green investing; however, it was overshadowed by other economic priorities. As Dahlke told The Suit, One day, green investment is going to be a major component in the investment industry but its got a ways to go. Securities offered through LPL Financial, member FINRA/SIPC

ITS ALL IN THE DETAILS

Using Event Planning Software Simplifies the Process of Event Planning Big or Small The benefits of holding a corporate or fund-raising event are vast and varied. An event helps build and maintain relationships, raising awareness, enhancing image and creating buzz when done correctly. Beth Leipold of Copley, Ohio saw a growing need for streamlined event planning software, found a niche and created evoPlanning. Basically, we are the IT department for corporate and professional event planners. We create user-friendly formats to allow event planners to manage their events and readily access data, Leipold said. Our job is to make them look good. We create online registration forms customized by event, announce that registration has begun via email, customize their registration page, set up credit card processing and post forms to a website. We can email event reminders and even create name badges with bar codes. Revenue stats are collected and posted live, allowing the planner access to data 24/7, Leipold added.

by diane alter

Some of the advantages of using such specialized software include keeping the event planner informed, improved service, accurate financial management and data and organization. Organization may be the tool needed most for successful meetings, conferences, trade shows and fundraisers. Pulling off a fruitful and effective event is enormously rewarding, but even the most organized and skilled event planner might look for help at some point. Taking advantage of technology, more and more event planners use event planning software to streamline efficiency, lower risks, keep costs down and increase attendance. Capable of powering events from 100 attendees to 6,000 (or more), evoPlanning works closely with clients whether first-timer event planners or seasoned pros. Their step-by-step guidance through the entire intricate process truly ensures a stellar event.

A Crystal Ball Captures Solar Energy

magine a giant crystal ball capable of concentrating sunlight and moonlight, harnessing them and increasing solar cell energy efficiency by up to 10,000 times. For many years scientists have been researching ways of obtaining more power from solar energy cells. Andre Broessel, a German-born architect based in Barcelona, Spain who has loved playing with light since he was a child made exciting new breakthroughs in solar energy, developing a spherical glass energy generator thats said to improve solar panel cell efficiency by more than 35% in building integration. The spherical glass orb, when filled with water, acts as a regular lens -but has unique features- concentrating diffusing daylight and moonlight with the help of an optical tracking mechanism into a solar cell from which electricity can be harvested. While he studied the airy disk center and transmissions he chose the full moon as a diaphragm to reduce the intensity of light. In fact moonlight is reflected sunlight. If you concentrate it you harvest energy. I started with a project in Germany,

working with clients within my generation. We had a special situation I was living in a house where we had very little sunlight and no panoramic view, he explains, I was playing with light in the sky, developing and discussing methods for renewable applications, by creating panoramic skylight, a concept of using a singlelens reflex camera. Broessel started his career late in life, attending the Dusseldorf University in Germany. After, moving to Berlin he studied architecture and the flow of light. Berlin was an exciting city at that time, as the East and West were just integrating. Even living in a big city, Broessel had a dream about taking his vision to another level. He decided to leave Germany and take on an experimental project in Barcelona, Spain. I was already involved in technology, and Spain would allow my vision and imagination to grow, Broessel said. This big city gives you new input and new visions. At the time, Spain was filled with a lot of new projects in energy and power plants. For anyone interested in the field of solar energy, it was a good place to be. As an architect, Broessel always had

is the conversion of light into an electric current. (Photovoltaic means electricity from light photo = light, voltaic = electricity.) The example is to think of light in terms of a stream of photons, where each photon carries a quantum of energy. Each photon of energy is associated with one wave length frequency. Like a visible spectrum in a rainbow where every color has its own wave length and the frequencies are sometimes shorter or longer. When these frequencies of light enter a semiconductor they produce a kind of band gap also known as an electrical field. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. If you go in further we can play with the wave lengths and different materials that have the capacity to absorb light, he said. And then you will find out why they are producing multi-junction cells which are used in this type of process. Also known as high physics. Broessell argues that depending on the material and frequency used as light passes through the absorption process, it creates multi-junction cells. More than one band gap and more than one junction are referred to as multi-

junction cells. Multi-junction devices can achieve higher total conversion efficiency because they can convert more of the energy spectrum of light to electricity. Broessell said he has been studying photovoltaic and architecture for more than 20 years. My visions of architecture and light meshed hand in hand. He explains, I love to play with light and structures, the idea of life and nature reflects on everything that surrounds us. Great minds such as Albert Einstein and French physicist, Edmund Bequerel in 1839 founded that certain materials would produce small amounts of electric currents when exposed to light. And, in 1905, Albert Einstein described the nature of light and the photoelectric effect on which photovoltaic technology is based, for which he later won a Nobel prize in physics. One of his goals to focus on in 2013 is his continued research on the spherical solar thermal orb project and continues to experiment with complex technology, where no computer on earth can calculate the biometrics of the solar thermal orb and how light can be harnessed to produce electricity to power our cities. Rather than taking the nature of the land and building useless power plants. It is our responsibility to reach out to more people and show them that the future of earth will rely on the people protecting it, Broessell said.

HARNESSING THE CLOUD

Why More Companies Are Moving to Off-Premise Solutions
efore the Internet, companies had no choice but to install all the software they needed to use on their own computers and networks. Now that is changing as many providers move to a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. Customers access the software products online and hardware remains the property of the provider. Accessing software from a distance also known as in the cloud removes the cost of maintaining that software from the customer, leaving it with the provider. Obviously, this is a better deal for customers. Traditionally, whats happened is we build applications and theyre on the internal network and infrastructure. Its a lot of effort to patch the hardware, to patch the firmware, to keep the software up-to-date. Whats really important is the actual application the thing that does the work for the business, said Vincent Mayfield, CEO of Bit-Wizards, a custom software development company. By moving to the cloud, we take away a lot of the need for having to deal with that infrastructure, and we can focus on whats truly important, which is the application that solves the business problem, or

performs the work, or makes them more efficient. One chief concern with cloud-based offerings is security, since data needs to pass back and forth over the Internet from the providers server to the customers workstation. As a custom application development shop, the focus for us is Platform as a Service (PaaS) in conjunction with SaaS integrating the two for a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). This also allows for Hybrid solutions such as Private

field said. So that way, what were doing is decreasing our cost of operations and still being able to adhere to some of those issues that come up with security. Mayfield believes that moving into the cloud is a great choice for companies that are struggling to save money. It also gives businesses with smaller budgets access to enterpriselevel IT infrastructure and services that they couldnt afford to own.. The smart organizations say, How do we invest in information systems that are going to make our business more profitable and more streamlined? Mayfield said. I think the smart businesses actually did that in the economic downturn and continue to do so. Theyre going to come out stronger companies in the long run than their competitors who just cut things to the bone.

Increase the Value and Appeal of Your Home with an Outdoor Up-grade
by diane alter Any kind of home improvement adds value to a home, says Christopher Peeples, president and founder of Vixen Hill Mfg. Co., a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of exterior amenities like shutters and porch systems, enclosed outdoor buildings such as cabanas and garden houses, as well as open-air structures like gazebos and pergolas that provide shade. An outdoor upgrade or improvement does even more, Peeples adds, it makes a destination into a home. (makes home a resort destination) An ailing economy and tough housing market have forced scores of Americans to spend more time at home. Some, finding it almost impossible to sell their homes, decide to stay put until the housing market rebounds. Many with extra time on their hands are sprucing up their homes both indoors and out. Doing this not only makes a home feel more inviting and comfortable, but also adds value and attractiveness to entice buyers. Unwilling or unable to pay someone else for what they are capable of doing themselves, more and more homeowners are turning to DIY (do it yourself) projects. Vixen Hills line of pre-engineered kits use only the highest quality materials, such as cedar from their own sawmill, and are designed by highly skilled engineers and craftsmen especially for simple one day or weekend

assembly. Customers can also take advantage of design-it-yourself options from interchangeable components. Vixen Hill ships products all over the country, with their biggest markets being Pennsylvania, where they are located and California. In business for almost 30 years, Vixen Hill has refined and blended art and technology into products that are both attractive and durable. We use only the bestmaterials & joinery so we never have to apologize for any of our products, Peeples notes. While people might hold off on larger house projects, like painting the exterior or major additions, they eagerly engage in beautifying their home sweet home. Even though plenty of ambitious individuals start a DIY project and never finish it, this is less likely with an easy, stress-free, sophisticated project from Vixen Hill one that can be finished in as little as a single day. Such projects not only add to a homes aesthetics, but the sense of accomplishment is also very rewarding.

Exacting Standards in Rochester

by the suit staff ochester, NY was just named one of the 10 Underrated Hotbeds of American Innovation by Fast Company magazine. Boasting an incredible 66 machine shops because of the prevalence of high-tech manufacturing in that area, Rochester is well able to support any kind of manufacturing and make any kind of part that an inventor or entrepreneur might be able to dream up. One of the best is Exact Machining and Manufacturing, Inc., headed by CEO Daniel J. Bleier. Founded almost 14 years ago, the companys experience and attention to detail as their name implies makes them uniquely capable of producing parts matching the exacting standards of quality demanded by their clients. In fact, the staff at Exact Machining has over 60 years of combined experience in manufacturing and machining to industrial standards. Bleier uses precise Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling and machining, among other techniques, requiring operators to have significant math and computer skills for programming the machines. Exacts operators, experienced in short and long run CNC production, can make whatever the client needs, including industrial molds, special dies, tools and die sets, jigs and fixtures. They make these items from materials that range from engineering plastics with unique properties (Ultem 1000, Nylatron and Tecaform) to tool steel graded for specific applications, from embossing and blanking to blades and industrial cutting tools. Our long-term plan is to stay a small manufacturing company that is able to give our customers exactly what they want, noted Bleier.

A new request comes in from a client and we figure out how we can handle that. The software we install can be very extensive. It can be running a whole warehouse or just the case routing, Hite told The Suit. The company also offers on-site analysis and project management, as well as personalized training and 24/7 customer support. Generally, we sit on-site with one or two people for a couple of weeks, to make sure that everything is working correctly, said Hite. The companys sophisticated systems are making huge strides toward securing and stabilizing itemization in warehouses, storehouses, and distribution centers, alike. Their technologies can avert theft, prevent mislabeled and misplaced products, and simplify the processing of company merchandise. This streamlined productivity can promote dependability and consumer trust. QC Software anticipates using faster systems and on expanding their client reach. rganization is pivotal when it comes to maintaining a fast, professional pace in business. It is crucial for optimum productivity and can mean all the difference in giving a company the competitive edge in their industry. Richard Hite, owner of Cincinnatibased QC Software, Inc., has been supplying high-tech warehouse control systems and software to companies since 1996. These technologically advanced products offer real-time data management, order confirmation, and a virtual view of stock and inventory within a goods holder, improving operating efficiency by reducing cost and time with real-time data, reports and statistics. QC Software offers services and tools essential for operating and managing storehouses and distribution centers. Most of our business is retail customers in warehousing or direct selling, said Hite. When or-

ders come in or shipments go out, a tracking system allows employees to precisely monitor the status of warehoused items, enhancing the scope of a companys merchandise management. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) has been used for automatic identification and tracking in many fields since the 1940s. This technology, which has in some cases replaced barcoding, can be found in retail stores, libraries, and even hospitals. Hite explained that, while barcode technology is less costly and is effective in locating inventory, it can be tedious due to the need to scan an individual barcode on each item. RFID, too, can be problematic if its ability to pick up multiple signals is not focused correctly, but it is faster and more practical for scanning and identifying a larger quantity of products than barcoding. QC Software offers both technologies, along with a

Thats an understatement: GPS and satelPaul Polifrone and Rob Heintz lites, electronic data storage, the Internet, tablets, e-readers and smartphones, along with the latest and greatest personal computers, are some of the innovative products that have already transformed our world. Programs and software enabling users to do things like access the web safely, manage social networks, buy online and even download large files at breakneck speed, keep coming in an unrelenting stream. Paul Polifrone and Rob Heintz, co-owners of ITeam IT and Data Services LLC, must keep up with these trends. Things can be different from today and tomorrow because its such a fast-paced, constantly changing market, they told The Suit. Cloud computing, new processors, new technologies its getting faster and faster every day. In todays digital age, computers and other electronic devices can present a nightmare for those not up-to-date on the latest technology. New programs and software keep coming and PC maintenance alone can be an overwhelming task, even for users with moderate computer literacy. As IT consultants, Heinz and Polifrone steer their company toward service for those out of the digital loop. ITeam offers a myriad of computer services, from helping start-ups set up networking and security in new offices, to on-site virus and spyware removal, and even custom building PCs. We pretty much cover all avenues, said Polifrone. What places the ITeam on a higher podium is the companys ability to help a wide range of customers. Offering at-home services and even on-site training means fast and reliable service without the customer lugging in large pieces of machinery. With such a wide spectrum of IT knowledge, they can help advanced users as well as novices navigate through the many ins and outs of computing today.

A NEW APPROACH TO PRODUCT MARKETING VISUALIZATION

and desktop application called the Kaon Meson Platform to build and run sales demos. We use high definition photographs as the textures for 3-D product models. Unlike a lot of other technologies in the 3-D world, were not doing renderings to create animations that look fairly realistic. Were actually doing highly realistic HD photographic representations of the exterior and interior of these products, so that the products look, feel and behave exactly the way the physical products would behave, Finn said. If you want to explore a product, take out a component or change out a power supply, that all happens in real time, using 3-D animation that we create. Its very fast, very smooth and very powerful, so that the visualization is highly realistic, and the customer experience is also incredibly fluid and very compelling. Kaon Interactive recently developed an app for one client integrating 3-D product demonstrations with live social media feeds in a way that can be viewed on mobile platforms like phones and tablets. In addition to having a mobile platform that allows them to present their companies product catalog, theyve got a social platform that allows them to interact with their colleagues all around the world, even if theyve never actually met, Finn said. It might be the ultimate in cool.

Interactive Platform Renders Mobile Marketing Success

onsumers today have very high expectations about how marketing graphics are supposed to look. In fact, extremely realistic, fast 3-D models have become the norm, rather than the exception. And those graphics need to perform well across many kinds of devices not just on a PC, but on laptops, websites, tablets, and smartphones.Theres been quite a transformation, driven in part by the 3-D game industry, that has really exploded over the last decade, said Gavin Finn, CEO of Kaon Interactive, a company that creates interactive 3D product marketing applications. There are two dynamics at play here. One is a consumer expectation of fully interactive, 3-D capabilities in almost every aspect of digital interaction. And so thats created a high bar for everybody in the industry. On the technology side, theres been a really powerful base

of platforms that have enabled 3-D across a whole variety of devices. Kaon Interactives focus is on creating totally accurate 3-D product models allowing marketing teams and salespeople to do product demos anywhere, without having to have the actual product with them. This provides a huge competitive advantage for clients because their salespeople can now do product demos as needed, without advance notice and remotely in the customers own office. Heightened Awareness
HOW ALTAWARE, INC., IS KEEPING UP WITH THE SECURITY REVOLUTION
Along with todays huge advancements in IT and networking industries, such as cloud computing and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), come ever more sophisticated hacking and security threats. A minor malfunction in a companys networking system, or a cyber security break-in can compromise trade secrets, sometimes even bringing a business to its knees. With over 25 years experience in IT, Werner Schmidt knows these threats and the dangers they pose. As President and CEO of the networking security company Altaware, Inc., Schmidt offers enterprises nationwide services for storing and securing information, enabling data recovery and loss prevention. We provide enterprises great DNS solutions and security products along with policies and services to make sure those solutions are utilized, said Schmidt. Cloud computing the growing trend toward using remote servers over the Internet is gaining popularity. By allowing employees access to data through many different entry points, companies increase accessibility while decreasing IT time. However, Schmidt is not convinced that cloud computing is immune to the dangers of security compromise. Federations of clouds, to me, are a big problem along with proper security availability and performance monitoring. Even if you use clouds, they still require addressing networking and security concerns. Whether the cloud is private or public, the infrastructure and processes still need to be in place. Theres a big potential risk in the clouds, he said. With new technology requiring security precautions, and hardware and software needed to safeguard data, there is a growing need for networking security services. I actually chose a dynamic field like security because Im constantly learning, said Schmidt. It gives me a competitive advantage to be in a field which is constantly changing. I can be an asset to our customers who perhaps cant keep up with the rate of change, he said. Schmidts personal experience in IT enables him to service his customers with a hands on approach. Since the companys founding in 1999, Altaware has contributed to network security in the fields of medicine and education by keeping patient and student records secure, in addition to data loss prevention and disaster recovery. Regardless of the perilous state of the nations economy, Schmidt has kept Altaware afloat. The focus is on business not busyness. Improvement and betterment is a goal versus perfection, he said. Last year was a great year. Adamant and optimistic, Schmidt is preparing for an upsurge and a bright economic future. In business its getting rid of less productive tasks and endeavors, and going deeper into our core areas while still broadening into new areas, he said. It has meant replacing a bad habit with a good habit, and thats a multiplier.

FROM VICTIM TO VICTORY

Becoming a Great Advocate

ew lawyers can say that they have actually experienced what being mistreated by a company is like wishing they had the education or advocacy from an attorney to represent them and address their injustice. Michael Ian Rott, managing partner of the San Diego-based law firm Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP (HRO) knows the frustrations of company corruption firsthand. After a bitter experience with a trusted automobile manufacturer, Rott became interested in law and the rights of consumers. Using his own bad experience as a springboard, Rott educates and advocates for victims and he is passionate about achieving results for his clients. Rott and his colleagues at HRO have a reputation for commitment and teamwork. The entire firm represents each client in a multitude of areas, including family law, social security disability, and even employment litigation. But, that is not all they do. Class action lawsuits represent 60% of our business, Rott told The Suit. We look at what is going to have the biggest impact on the general public, he said of the firms client reach. This allows the attorneys at HRO to tackle large cases affecting many consumers with a common problem. The firm does not limit itself to this strategy, as they also represent clients in personal injury, workers compensation, and wrongful death cases. Despite winning many 7-figure settlements and initiating high-profile cases against big names like Apple and AT&T, Rott and his firm also believe in a swift settlement to ease the tumultuous lawsuit procedure. I think that arbitration is certainly beneficial and the process is a nice adjunct to the civil system, he said. Rott scored a superb 10.0 on two AVVO Ratings for experience, industry recognition, and professional conduct one as a Top Workers Compensation Attorney, and the other as a Top Class Action Attorney. Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP as a firm also comes highly recommended by past clients and former opposing esquires. Our lawyers and support staff are what strengthen our firm, said Rott.

Litigious Lawyer
A POLITICAL POWERHOUSE

Approximately 50% of law school graduates either never practice law or struggle continuously to find work. The job market is flooded and only those few who show an eagerness to work toward proving credibility ever emerge from the boiling pot as successful -- practicing lawyers. Even fewer actually open their own successful law firms. Anthony Difruscia, owner of Difruscia Law Offices, can proudly number himself among those few. A high-profile attorney and entrepreneur with an action-packed resume, Difruscia has been offering exemplary legal services to northeastern Massachusetts for over 40 years.

Difruscia Law Offices is a full-service law firm offering its services to a diverse group of clients presenting an even broader range of cases. Twenty percent of the firms cases are criminal and they also practice family law, personal injury, workers compensation and Social Security disability, along with wills, estates and trusts. We are a people kind of practice, said Difruscia. His passion for debate and mastery of the art of persuasion separates Difruscia from others. Persuasion is an art that is developed. Presenting your side of an argument becomes a very important function naturally I would think to get involved in trial work in the courtroom, he told The Suit. In his younger years, Difruscias bold leadership was already apparent. He received a debate scholarship to Emerson College, and at age 26 was elected as Massachusetts State Representative, serving there for 3 terms. Later he also became a New Hampshire State Representative, serving for 12 years. In the process, he became one of only five Americans who have served as legislators for two different states. Difruscia pointed out an interesting evolution in the law, driven by

technological advancements. New technology has greatly influenced the way cases can be presented in court. By using digital presentations and video technologies, cases can be presented with more sophistication and clarity. New technology has impacted practical law as well. THE HIDDEN RISKS OF BANKRUPTCY

Why Choosing the Right Attorney is Crucial
There are many unscrupulous attorneys who just take advantage their clients. , explained Michael Grennier, owner of Grennier Law, PC, a premier California bankruptcy attorney. And it slays me to see that happening. Thats what initially inspired me to become a bankruptcy attorney. Grennier acknowledges that a competent advisor is particularly important under the new bankruptcy laws as the process is more stringent, burdensome and costly than ever. Sadly, many attorneys are motivated by profit, and will often direct their clients to choose a less than optimal path. Declaring bankruptcy in and of itself is an awful feeling. But doing so based on bad advice is far worse. This is one reason why it is critically important to choose a bankruptcy attorney who is both knowledgeable and ethical Grennier noted. Several of the bankruptcy attorneys in the area will push people into a Chapter 13 when a Chapter 13 probably isnt appropriate, Grennier said. And the debtor could get qualified for a Chapter 7 to simply erase the debt, he added. The reason this happens is because in this particular jurisdiction, these unscrupulous attorneys stand to make double their fees on a Chapter 13 as compared to what they would make on a Chapter 7. With an event as life-changing as a bankruptcy, its critically important to evaluate your advisor carefully by checking with agencies such as Avvo, a client and peer reviewing service. Just go to http://www.avvo. com/attorneys/93003-ca-michael-grennier-289855. html to see that Attorney Grennier is a Superb, 10 out of 10 rated bankruptcy attorney. You will also find with the Better Business Bureau that Grennier has a perfect A+ rating. You can also check with the local Bar Association and, if possible, by speaking with some of his former clients. Its also wise to stay away from nonattorneys claiming they can assist you, as they are not regulated by the bar or any other association, Grennier added. He practices law by the motto, We care, we can help. If you have any questions about debt or the bankruptcy process, Attorney Grennier can be contacted at (805) 643-3900 or by email at grennierlaw@gmail.com.

ron Chefs use sous vide cooking; you've seen it when they want something that's really juicy. Michael Harris, CEO of Scientific Manufacturing, envisions his sous vide cookers in every home like a microwave, believing this technique will become a preferred cooking method. Sous vide (pronounced soo vee) is French for under vacuum. By immersing vacuum-sealed food in hot water at precise, but lower temperatures for a long time, food cooks slowly and evenly. The technique is a monumental culinary advance that some describe in the same breath as the invention of the food processor and the gas stove. Harris designed four sous vide cookers, successfully introducing them into many restaurants, and also hoping to place them in chains, hotels and casinos. He admits many U.S. chefs have not personally used sous vide, but many are intrigued, becoming more receptive. My models enable chefs to cook and store more food. It is also clean and neat. Since everything is contained, you only need half the seasoning or marinade, Harris
