ALAZAR MANNING, TOP FUND RAISER For the second year in a row, our own Alazar Manning was the top fund raiser for the CAP (Cascade Aids Project) AIDS WALK Portland!! Keep in mind Alazar is 12, and out-raised all the adults. Part of his success was due to his blog: www.ateamfund.org and the other part was just plain hard work and keeping this at the forefront of his activities for an ENTIRE YEAR.

WORKSHOP
On September 30 from noon to 6:30 pm, the Institute for Communal Contemplation and Dialogue will offer a workshop entitled TRANSFORMATION IN A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY. Sr. Nancy Sylvester, IMH President and Founder of the Institute, will be the presenter. She will facilitate a process of learning to listen, speak and pray from this perspective, and guiding us to new places of understanding and act ion. The workshop will be held at Clark Commons, Marylhurst University, 17600 Pacific Highway. Registration is possible onsite. The cost is $30 which will include snacks and beverages. For further information, please contact Sr. Pat Negal at earthome@igc.org or Sr. Carol Higgins at chiggins@ Marylhurst.edu.

fleeing violence and persecution in a massive exodus. They are leaving countries where Christianity has not only flourished, but in many cases took root 2000 years ago in the first spread of Christianity. They have been there longer than the Islamic community. Not only Christians are being persecuted, though. other minority religious communities are also disrespected and being driven out, including various Muslim minorities. Christians who speak out for religious freedom for all people, because of their pursuit of the truth, live in fear or are martyred in an insult to God and human dignity. This cannot be allowed to stand. As believers who know the value and dignity of every human person. We must find ways to hold out political and economic leaders to account for allowing human beings to take second place to other values. And among the freedoms that stand in the first rank for us to defend, religious freedom stands at the top. We must insist that we be informed ourselves, and that our leaders be informed of the dangers to the human community that flow from ignoring this basic human right. We Catholics can also take further concrete steps by supporting Catholic Relief Services who reach out to people of all faiths who are suffering. Fr. Jim McCauley, CSP
