John Chapter 8

Joh 8:1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. Joh 8:2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. The mount was about a mile east of Jerusalem. He probably stayed the night there and returned to the temple early the next morning. People were so eager to hear Him. They arrived first thing the next morning. Joh 8:3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, Joh 8:4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Joh 8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? Joh 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. Joh 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. Joh 8:8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. Joh 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. Joh 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? Joh 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. The reason Christ came was to bring sinners to repentance. He did not condone the woman's sin. But Jesus did not condemn her to death. The members of the Sanhedrin who had brought the woman to Jesus, brought her to see what Jesus would do. They didn't care for the woman's soul. They would have had her stoned. Where was the man? They had not done as the law commanded in this case, for it says: Lev_20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Jesus did not scold or convict the people who brought the woman. He allowed each person to be convicted by their own conscience. Jesus asks the woman, Where are those thine accusers? The woman looked up and saw no one. Jesus with love says, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. Although there was no condemnation, Jesus lets her know the deed is not acceptable by telling her not to do it again. Sin no more. Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Joh 8:13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

Joh 8:14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. Joh 8:15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. Joh 8:16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. Joh 8:17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. Joh 8:18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. Jesus has brought light into the world. What an awful darkness this world would be in without Him. Though He bore record of Himself, His record was true. The Father also bore record, and the Jews regarded the record of two witnesses to be true. (M Henry) It is not enough to look at this light, and to gaze upon it, but we must follow it, believe in it, and walk in it, for it is a light to our feet, not our eyes only. They shall have the light of life, that knowledge and enjoyment of God which will be to them the light of spiritual life in this world and of everlasting life in the other world, where there will be no death nor darkness. Follow Christ, and we shall undoubtedly be happy in both worlds. Follow Christ, and we shall follow him to heaven. Joh 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. Joh 8:20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. Joh 8:21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Joh 8:22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. Jesus said His Father bore witness of Him. The Jews being ignorant of who Jesus really was asked. Where is Thy Father? Jesus knew if they had known the Father they would have known Him. Of course, the Jews thought they knew God. They were very religious, but, they did not know Him. When the Lord spoke of going away they thought He meant to kill Himself. This just signified their ignorance of God and His Will. Joh 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. Joh 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. Jesus knew that with the carnal mind they were judging Him. You cannot judge spiritual things with a carnal mind without being mistaken. Salvation is given through faith. Without faith people die in their sin. Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Joh 8:25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. Joh 8:26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. Joh 8:27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. Joh 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. Joh 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. Joh 8:30 As he spake these words, many believed on him. Thank God! Finally, some of the people were grasping the truth. This man must be sent from God. Even today people are still coming to the knowledge of Him. What a shame it is for people not to believe in their very creator. But many still today are blinded by the carnal mind. Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Joh 8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Joh 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. Joh 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Jesus tried to let them see their bondage. They couldn't see they were slaves to sin. They couldn't see, He came to set them free. A servant might belong to a house for awhile, but he could always be sold to someone else at any time. The Son belonged to a house forever. A son had the right to make a servant free. If the Son shall make you free, you are free indeed. Joh 8:37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. Joh 8:38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. Jesus tells them, yes, you are Abraham's seed. (physically) But I am telling you things that my Father wants you to know. (spiritual things) And you are living by things you have seen your fathers do. (physically) Joh 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. This time they called Abraham, Father. Abraham commanded his children well. Gen_18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. Joh 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have

heard of God: this did not Abraham. Joh 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Joh 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Joh 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. Joh 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Joh 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? Joh 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Plain and simple, the Jews have said here that Abraham was their father, then they said God was their Father. Neither was true. They didn't obey either of them. They were obedient to the devil. He was their father. The devil hates the truth. He was the creator of the lie. Lies he speaks. Those who choose to believe his lies are his children. The people could not hear God's Word because they were not of God. He that is of God heareth His words. Joh 8:48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Joh 8:49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. Joh 8:50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Joh 8:51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. Joh 8:52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. Joh 8:53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Joh 8:54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Joh 8:55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Now the leaders tried to turn things around and say that Jesus had a devil. Jesus' miracles which He performed should have shown the Jews God's approval. But instead it made them jealous. Jesus always sought honor to be given to the Father. Jesus was revealing LIFE that was in the Father. Abraham was not dead as the Jews supposed. Abraham believed. Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Joh 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Joh 8:57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Joh 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Joh 8:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. They asked the question Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? But when Jesus told them how it was possible for him to know Abraham, they totally lost it. They took up stones to stone Him. But Jesus escaped, for the Father had not finished His work.
