QUESTION 2 A bent arm OA is turning at an angular velocity Q = 3 r/s and angular acceleration Q = 0.5 r/s2 as shown in Figure Q2. A disc at end A of the arm is spinning at a constant angular velocity p = 2 r/s relative to the arm. A hydraulic cylinder is attached to the disc at a constant angle 0 = tan"1 %, and carries a piston which is protruding at a constant rate of 1 cm/s relative to the cylinder. At the instant shown, AB = 50 cm and is in the X-Y plane. Determine the velocity and acceleration of point B at the tip of the piston.

QUESTION 3 Figure Q3 shows the left landing gear of a plane ( viewed from the front) being retracted soon after take-off. When 9 = 60", OA = 1.2 m and u - 0.05 m/s constant. The main strut OA is folding at a rate of p = 2 rad/s and p = 1 rad/s2 in the direction shown. At the same time, the wheel is spinning at a rate of q = 8 rad/s and q = -3 rad/s2. Determine the angular momentum and moment at O due to the wheel. The wheel may be regarded as a thin circular disc with mass 5 kg and radius 0.4 m. Given AB = 0.3 m.

QUESTION

A shaft OB of negligible mass carries a uniform arm AC of mass 1 kg a uniform thin disc of mass 0.5 kg is rigidly attached to the arm as shown in Figure Q4. A moment 7 is then applied to the shaft as shown such that when 0=tan~ 1 % the whole assembly rotates with angular velocity 0 = 2 rad/s. and angular acceleration 9 = 3 rad/s2. Determine the applied moment 7. Determine also the reactions at bearings O and B at that instant.

QUESTION 5 a) A 200-kg motorcycle is designed to have an underdamped shock absorber. When the shock absorber is subjected to an initial vertical velocity due to a road bump, the resulting damped period of vibration is 2 s and the initial amplitude is reduced to one-fifth in two cycles. Determine for this system: i. ii. iii. the logarithmic decrement S, the natural frequency cont and the damping ratio the corresponding spring stiffness k and the damping constant c of the shock absorber, and the vibration frequency in hertz and the critical damping constant. (10 marks) b) Determine the natural period of vibration of the disk having a mass m and radius r as shown in Figure Q5. Assume the disk does not slip on the surface of contact as it oscillates.
