The Holy SACRIFICE of the Mass

*Sacrifice performed to worship a deity or supernatural power dates back to the very shadows of human history. In Jewish monotheism, we find sacrifice in Genesis: Cain and Abel sacrifice the fruits of their labor; Abraham is prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Animal sacrifice was the fundamental form of temple worship in Jerusalem until its destruction by the Romans in 70 AD. The basic concept behind sacrifice is to set something aside, make it sacred (consecrate), and then offer it as a gift. Jesus and His first followers participated in this specific, Jewish sacrificial tradition that was part of a broader culture and civilization that used animal sacrifice. *The Mass is a sacrifice in the ancient sense on an altar of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial animal is the Paschal Lamb of God. Every Mass re-presents (sacramentally makes present) Christs redeeming sacrifice on Calvary, His offer of His very life to God as a gift. At Mass, we do indeed stand at the foot of the cross on Calvary! *The language used by Jesus at the Last Supper (a Passover Seder celebration), and repeated during the consecration at every Mass, has strong sacrificial overtones: His body offered up; His blood poured out. Jesus refers to His own body and blood being offered in sacrifice like the Passover Lamb. *When we celebrate the Mass, we are participating in a 2000 year old form of Christian worship that dates back to the earliest days of the apostles after the death and resurrection of Jesus. They were obeying His command at the Last Supper to eat and drink, in memory of Him, the bread and wine which become His body and blood. This Eucharistic feast quickly evolved along Jewish ritualistic lines to the liturgical format still used today. In the first half of the second century (c. 155), St. Justin describes Christian worship as being composed of readings from Jewish scripture and from Christian writings, preaching, community prayers, offerings, Eucharist, kiss of peace, and communion. *Unlike other Christian religions, Catholics do not regard the Eucharist as merely a symbol of Jesus, as only a vague spiritual presence of Christ in the bread and wine. Catholics believe that when the priest recites Jesus words at the moment of consecration during the Mass, the bread and wine on the altar change into the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. The theological term is transubstantiation. *Interestingly, the doctrine of transubstantiation was not officially articulated and written down until the Council of Trent in the middle of the 1500s. The council was called in response to Martin Luther and the Protestant reformation. The real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist was commonly believed from the time of the apostles and not challenged for 1500 years (until Luther and other reformists) so there was never a need to write it down! *Jesus taught extensively about the Eucharist: he who eats His flesh and drinks His blood will have eternal life and be raised up on the last day, because he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him (John 6:5356). *In the Jewish Passover rite, it was not enough to kill the animal and offer it to God. The sacrificial lamb also had to be eaten as an essential part of the Passover celebration. This communion meal expressed the sealing of the covenant between God and His people. The celebration of the Eucharist is directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through Communion. *During communion, we give our fullest attention to the Lord as He dwells within us. We should pour out our hearts to Him: love Him, thank Him, and share our deepest needs with him. When we receive communion, we are like Mary who carried the God-Man in her womb, like living tabernacles, housing the body and blood of Our Lord Himself. *Receiving communion regularly can have a tremendous impact on our lives. By devoutly nourishing ourselves with the Eucharist, we are gradually transformed by His life dwelling within us. We become what we eat!

The Rosary Altar Society would like to remind the OLP

parish family that October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. We have made available to the children and the adults of our parish How to Pray the Rosary pamphlets. The Academy and the Catechetical Office will distribute the pamphlets to the children. Pamphlets for adults are available on the tables at the back of the Church. Additional childrens pamphlets are also available. The Rosary Altar Society meetings resume in October and we will celebrate Mass together on Sunday October 7th at 10:30. After the Mass we pray the Rosary. Please join us. We hope these pamphlets will encourage devotion to Mary and the praying of the Rosary individually, with your family, with ministry groups, and with us on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 10:30 Mass. We would also like you to know that parishioners pray the Rosary after the 12:10pm Mass during the week and before the 8:30am Mass on Saturdays.
