Thermocouple Installation Procedure GPX-TCID-001-060900


Preface:
This procedure is for typical installation and placement of Gillespie + Powers, Inc. control thermocouples, and is written with the sole purpose to serve as a recommended general guide, and cannot be changed and/or modified without the expressed written consent of Gillespie + Powers, Inc.

This procedure makes several assumptions. 1.) The supplied Gillespie + Powers, Inc. thermocouples are to be used. 2.) A trained technician will be performing these procedures, and installations. Gillespie + Powers, Inc. assumes no responsibilities in the damages resulting from the misuse of these procedures.

Assemble tools and materials needed. Tools Razor Knife Tape measure Regular screwdriver Materials One Roll of Duck tape 1/8 ceramic paper 1 ceramic wool

Place collar on the silicon carbide shaft.

Reference the Gillespie + Powers, Inc. refractory drawings supplied with the operational manuals for your specific furnace. Locate drawing containing the dimensions for the thickness of the roof refractory. Collar placement will be: Total Refractory Thickness + 1-3/4 = Collar placement height

Be sure to tighten the three locking screws evenly on the carbide shaft. Note: special care must be taken not to over tighten the screws, as it can lead to the shaft breaking 2

Take the 1/8 ceramic paper and cut out a rectangular shape as shown

Shape should be: Total Refractory Thickness + 1 wide X 22 long

Use the duck tape to hold the ceramic paper to the thermocouple.

Wrap the paper around the shaft.

About of the carbide shaft should be exposed. Use the duck tape to secure the ceramic paper as shown.

Cut a 12 x 12 square out of the ceramic wool

Place the roll of duck tape in the middle and press down; this will place a round imprint on the wool.

Cut the innermost circle out, it should be about 2-1/2 to 3 in diameter.

We should now have the thermocouple ready for insertion on the furnace

On top of the furnace, locate the area where the thermocouples are to be placed

Remove any grading required

Clean off any large debris that might prevent the thermocouple from sitting flat and level Note: Use extreme caution when performing this task. Hot gases may vent through the thermocouple hole. 12

Slowly insert thermocouple in hole If tight slowly twist the thermocouple in to the hole, making sure not to unravel the 1/8 paper on the thermocouple by rotating the thermocouple in the opposite direction of the rolled paper.

Note: Use extreme caution when performing this task. Hot gases may vent through the thermocouple hole.

Plug in the thermocouple, above the opening
