FIFTH ANNUAL 4-H NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE DAY On October 10, 2012, millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day during the fifth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). NYSD is the premier national rallying event for year-round 4-H Science programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nations 111 land-grant colleges and universities to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment. In this years experiment, the 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge, youth will enhance their engineering skills by learning to think like a robotics engineer, assembling their own robots, also known as Eco-bots, and control surfaces in order to manage an environmental cleanup. Youth will then test the interaction between the Eco-Bots environmental engineering design features and various control surface configurations to determine the most effective environmental cleanup solution for a simulated toxic spill. Locally, youth ages 8-19 will have the opportunity to participate in this years project by attending the 4-H Robotics Challenge on October 10, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Hamlin Memorial Library Conference Room in Smethport, which is centrally located and handicap-accessible. Registration is free, but limited to 40 participants. Youth need not be enrolled in a 4-H club to take part in this event. Call the Penn State Extension office at 814-887-5613 to register. In explanation, we are finding some of our current active members are somewhat overworked and overwhelmed at times. The OV Rod & Gun Club Inc. is dedicated to sportsmen and area youth. We annually stock area streams with up to 10,000 trout. We sponsor the Hunter Safety Course

and Kids Fishing Derby. In addition, we provide a rifle range for our members and hold trap shoots that are open to the public. We also provide a meeting place for the Alleghany Treeing Hounds Club, 4-H Club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. At the present time we are in adequate financial position. We do, however, need more help with the few fundraisers we hold to help us meet our expenses (average approx. $500 per mo.). Our major fundraiser is the Bingo Hall at the fair and we are woefully short of help every year. We are putting out a plea to anyone that would like to see us continue stocking fish for the kids, keep the rifle range open and provide a meeting place for area youth groups to consider lending a hand. All we ask is that you try to attend a few meetings a year and attend one fundraiser. They are both fun and rewarding. So talk with a friend, relative or club member and consider attending the reorganizational meeting on Sunday, January 6th at 6:00pm at the Millport Club. We need your assistance and the community needs the club to continue the 55 plus year old tradition of supporting sportsmen and OV youth. Chop coarsely. 2) Melt the butter or margarine in a saucepan. Add onions and celery, and cook until limp. Add bread crumbs and spices. Mix thoroughly. Mix in chestnuts. Salt to taste. 3) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 4) Remove neck and giblets: use for gravy if desired. Wash turkey with cold water, and dry. Rub salt and pepper into body cavities. Spoon stuffing into body cavities. Do not pack tightly. Close skin with skewers or twine, and tie drumsticks together. Place turkey on a roasting pan. turkey to stand for 20 minutes before carving. 6) Any extra stuffing can be baked in a covered casserole in the oven with the turkey for the last hour. 1/4 cup Parsley; 1 Bay leaf, chopped Dumplings: 1 1/2 cup Flour 2 teaspoon Baking Powder 3/4 teaspoon Salt 2 tablespoon Parsley; chopped 1/2 teaspoon Rosemary; crushed 3 tablesoon Shortening 3/4 cup Milk; approx. Put all ingredients, except for dumplings, in removable liner. Place liner in base. Cover and cook on low 7 to 9 hours. Remove turkey carcass pieces; separate meat from bones and return to soup. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, rosemary and parsley. Chop in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Add enough milk to make a thick batter that can be mounded up in a spoon. Drop a tablespoon at a time on surface of soup. Space evenly. Cover and cook on high for 20 minutes without lifting lid. Place dumplings in bowl and spoon on soup.

Town-ship Road 572 (Riterville Road) bisects the northern portion of the property and will provide access for hunters and trappers. Another proposal approved by the Board is the purchase of 110 acres of land in Lafayette Township, McKean County, and 100 acres of land in Keating Township, McKean County, from Natural Resources Management Corporation and David J. Reed. Both tracts adjoin State Game Land 62, and will be purchased for $200,000, which will be paid with funds from third party commitments for compensation of habitat and recreational losses which occurred on State Game Lands from previously approved projects. Both tracts are forested with mixed northern hardwoods and witch hazel, low-bush blue-berry and raspberries in the understory. There are about 20 acres of old beaver dam meadows and wetlands associated with spring seeps and Three Mile Run, which flows through the property. There is good access to these tracts from the existing parts of State Game Land 62.

Sporting organizations and other interested groups have continued to express an interest in having the Game Commission

These groups support this proposed change in regulations to permit the transfer of no more than one Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) permit to a mentored youth hunter per license year. This change, along with the recent addition of fall turkey hunting to the MYHP, creates a wide range of opportunities for young hunters. Martone noted that this action will not significantly affect the DMAP antlerless deer harvest and is consistent with the goal of providing

additional mentored youth hunting opportunities. Also, it will work in the same manner as the recent change in regulations to allow adult mentors to transfer one Wildlife Management Unitspecific antlerless deer license to a mentored youth.

Since 2006, Pennsylvanias hunters have been taking advantage of a remarkable opportunity to introduce those under the age of 12 to hunting through the Mentored Youth Hunting Program, and we have seen a steady increase in the number of MYHP permits issued, said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. Hunting is deeply woven into the cultural fabric that defines Pennsylvania, and it is important that we recruit new hunters to carry on this tradition. Roe noted that the logic behind the MYHP is simple and clear: Create expanded youth hunting opportunities without compromising safety afield. In 2009, the first year a permit was required to participate in the MYHP, the agency issued 28,542 permits. In 2010, the agency issued 30,790; and, in 2011, the number of permits issued increased to 33,514. on. Introduction of species also can influence a native species population. Some species listed as endangered or threatened in Pennsylvania are so distinguished because their range barely extends into the state, or their population has a fragile foothold here. Under the action taken today, the upland sandpiper, a grassland nesting bird longclassified as threatened, has been moved to the endangered species list because it has declined precipitously over the last two decades and has virtually disappeared from Pennsylvania. We believe the upland sandpipers rarity and diminished breeding range warrant this move, said Daniel Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Division chief. The northern harrier, once a rare but regular breeder in the state, has experienced a marked decline in Pennsylvania, as well as declines in northwest and northcentral regions over the last few decades, prompting the Board to approve adding this species to the states list of threatened birds. The northern harrier is listed as either endangered or threatened in most neighboring states. Long-eared owls are extremely rare breeders in Pennsylvania, and difficult to survey. Nesting locations have been confirmed in only seven locations in recent years, despite a concerted survey effort over much of the last decade; most nests are located in the Ridge and Valley and Appalachian Plateau regions. The rarity and scattering of nest records within this Commonwealth have prompted this proposal to list the long-eared owl as threatened. Finally, in a reorganization of warbler nomenclature in 2011 by the American Ornithologists Union, the genus Dendroica was changed to Setophaga necessitating this administrative change in the scientific name of the blackpoll warbler, which is on the states endangered species list. Roe noted that the agency recently published a notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin to seek public comment on proposed language to make changes to the listing of certain bat species based on the impact of white-nose syndrome (WNS). The agency will be reviewing the public input received about the proposed language, and may be presenting additional changes to the states list of endangered and threatened species of bats. However, action was not taken today in regards to the listing of any bats. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
