KRISTINA SCALA/The Moorestown Sun
Girls on the Run of New Jersey (GOTRNJ) recently started up a program in Moorestown. It is the first and only program in Burlington
County. Girls in grades third to fifth get a chance to learn about confidence, self-control and exercise. The 10-week program will help
the girls build confidence, have fun, and train for a 5K race without even knowing it. At the end of the program, the girls will run a 5K
race. GOTRNJ meets on Memorial Field on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Pictured here, three stations were set up
along the gravel track. The girls had to start running until coach Carole blows the whistle. The girls need to stop running, go to the
nearest cone, and complete the activity on the list. The program ends on Nov 17. The program cost $185 for 75-minute sessions
where the girls meet two times per week. Contact GOTR at info@girlsontherunnj.org. For more information visit www.girlsontherun-
nj.org. Check out the online gallery by visiting www.moorestownsun.com.

Council

amending
liquor law
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
For the second time, council
approved amending the consump-
tion and sales of alcohol in
Moorestown on Monday, Sept. 24.
During the last council meet-
ing, council came up with a solu-
tion after Superior Court Judge
Roger Bookbinder ruled that the
second referendum on the ballot
last year was considered illegal.
Township manager Scott
Carew and solicitor Thomas Cole-
man came up with two options for
the council. Council could either
choose to limit the sales in the
SRC zone (Option A) or limit it to
the south side of Route 38 where
the Moorestown Mall and East
Gate are located.
Council unanimously voted for
Option B.
According to Mayor John But-
ton, the council changed the ordi-
nance to reflect Bookbinders rul-
ing, along with a resolution that
would closely reflect the resi-

The former Acme property on
Chester Avenue will finally have
a resident after being for five
years. Deputy Mayor Greg Gallo
announced at a recent council
meeting that an architecture firm
will move into a portion of the
building.
The Moorestown Friends
School is the current owner of
the property.
According to town manger
Scott Carew, the Moorestown Ap-
pearance Committee began re-
viewing proposals for exterior
improvements and permits for
demolition of the interior were
received.
Carew mentioned there is no
current time frame for the move
in date and additional informa-
tion is needed to determine if
councils approval is needed.
The move will not be able to
take place until construction per-
mits are issued and work com-
pleted, Carew said.
In March, the plan for the prop-
erty was to turn it into a farmers
market type institute. (Link to

tail location, which is what most

FALL SALE EVENT October 5th and 6th
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
For 39 years, Moorestown Divi-
sion of Fire Prevention has been
planning fire safety events for stu-
dents in grades kindergarten to
fourth grade.
Starting on Oct. 7 and ending
Oct. 18, Moorestown elementary
students will attend fire safety as-
semblies. Puppeteer Ray Farrell
is bringing his puppets to per-
form fire safety education shows.
Farrell makes sure to set up
five different shows so the chil-
dren never see the same show
twice. The children see a new
show every year, said
Moorestown Fire Marshall
Robert Worrell.
Farrell tries to get the message
out about fire safety and works it
into his puppet shows.
Assemblies are already sched-
uled for each school. The fire as-
sembly at the Roberts School is on
Oct. 17 at 9:30 a.m.; Our Lady of
Good Council School will be an-
nounced; The Moorestown
Friends School on Oct. 10 at 10
a.m.; Baker School on Oct. 9 at
1:15 p.m.; and South Valley on
Oct. 18 at 10 a.m.
Fire trucks will also stop by the
schools and the firefighters will
demonstrate putting on safety
equipment.
Worrell said the main purpose
of the firefighter showing chil-
dren how to put on the equipment
is to allow them to be more com-
fortable with firefighters in their
equipment.

F
ewer young adults are living at
home. Why does that matter?
According to economists deci-
phering recently released Census data,
it means that the Great Recession
might be over. For real, this time.
The Associated Press talked to a
number of experts when the data came
out a couple of weeks ago. While none
were turning cartwheels over the state
of the economy, they pointed to a num-
ber of factors that indicate that things
are getting better.
We all know that, technically, the re-
cession ended a few years ago. Yet, we
all see that unemployment remains
high and the housing market has been
really slow to show dramatic improve-
ment.
The new Census data, though, high-
lights a few things that perhaps are
more meaningful when it comes to
measuring economic strength.
One of those factors is the number of
young adults living at home. When
that number goes down, as it did in
2011 to 13.6 percent from 14.2 percent,
its a good thing. The experts The AP
spoke to said the trend indicates more
younger adults are more confident
about finding a job or attending a col-
lege.
There was more good news, too.
More people were moving to new hous-
es and towns. Poverty is slowing, too.
Indeed, one look at the better than 8
percent unemployment rate snuffs any
thought of a red-hot economy. But, if
people are feeling better about the fu-
ture, and acting on those feelings by
getting back into the swing of things,
its not only a good sign, its a true
boost to the economy. They likely will
spend more, for example, which will
help to create jobs.
While Mom and Dad might have
mixed feelings about waving goodbye
to their adult children, they should
know that, according to the experts,
its a good sign. It means that, perhaps,
after years of stagnation and reces-
sion, better economic times are getting
closer.
in our opinion
Goodbye, Junior, hello, recovery
New census data indicates that the economy actually might be on the way up
So long
More parents are waving goodbye to
their adult children, who are leaving the
nest to head out on their own.
According to the experts, thats an indi-
cation that the Great Recession finally
might be over.

Khalil Wimes tragedy highlights
need for CASA volunteers
The recent story about the horrific death
of Khalil Wimes once again should tell us
that we are all letting our most innocent
and vulnerable down. The system works
sometimes, but when it doesnt work a
child can die.
That is unacceptable.
As the article stated the failure can
occur at anytime in the process that a child
goes into the system of foster care.
Whether the failure is with the DHS,
judges, lawyers, physicians or all of them
as in the case of Khalil.
As a frustrated lawyer trying to help
these children, I found an organization
that puts volunteers with nothing to lose in
the role of advocating for children. CASA
stands for Court Appointed Special Advo-
cate. Please look up CASA in your county.
Its everyone's responsibility as citizens,
and humans to do something to protect the
lives of all children.

first Mega Adoption Event on Sat-

in the parking lot of the
Moorestown PetSmart. Seven-
teen animal welfare rescues and
shelters are joining together
under a giant tent to adopt out 250
dogs and cats in two days!
Mega Adoption Events are
gaining popularity across the
county as a way to save many
homeless animals from euthana-
sia.
We used to worry that some-
one adopting a pet from an event
like this was making a poor deci-
sion. Yet, we are learning that the
pets adopted from events arent
returned more often they stay in
the homes and are loved, shares
Maya Richmond, executive direc-
tor of the Animal Welfare Associ-
ation.
The AWA estimates that 300 to
400 pets will be available for adop-
tion. Two hundred fifty adopted
pets equals one full month of
adoptions at AWAs adoption cen-
ter in Voorhees or CCASs shelter
in Blackwood.
Go to www.awanj.org for de-
tails and to download a poster to
pass round.
All rescues will be under one

Town Council candidates Phil
Garwood, Victoria Napolitano,
and Pete Palko picked up five en-
dorsements from the entire Free-
holder Board of Burlington Coun-
ty.
We are humbled and grateful
to receive the support of five peo-
ple who truly understand what
the residents of our county and
our town need, Garwood said.
We are honored to receive their
endorsements and look forward
to having them join us on the
campaign trail.
We gladly stand shoulder-to-
shoulder with our Freeholder
Board in their fight to defend the
taxpayers of Moorestown and
Burlington County, Napolitano
added. The voters of
Moorestown have our promise
that as Councilmembers, we will
work hard every day with our
county officials to solve problems
and keep our town a place that we
can all be proud to call home.
All five of our County Free-
holders carried Moorestown in
their respective elections by size-
able majorities because the peo-
ple of our town know that we
need leaders who stand for fiscal
conservatism and responsible
government, Palko stated. With
our teams Blueprint for the Fu-
ture, Moorestown residents will
have a Town Council that listens
to their concerns, preserves our
towns heritage, and builds a
more prosperous tomorrow.

During the Annual Fire Safety

from 7 to 9 p.m., children from
ages 6 to 9 will get a chance to par-

Worrell explained that the five
steps are rolling out of bed, crawl-

smoke, feeling the door for heat,
stop, drop and roll, and emer-
gency (911) calls to the fire depart-
ment.
The phone calls are made at the
end of the session on fake tele-
phones. Volunteer firefighters are
on the other end of the phone. It
was set up to ensure each child is
able to calmly provide proper in-
formation regarding the emer-
gency, said Worrell.

Varsity tennis starts season with win
Join us on Friday, Oct. 5 at the
First United Methodist Church
on 446 Camden Avenue, for
Grounds for Good Coffee House.
The evening will feature live
music by contemporary Chris-
tian guitarist Mark Green and an
art exhibit by Seth Camm, who's
Homeless Project illuminates
the lives of the homeless through
drawings, paintings and stories.
Free coffee and tea will be
available, and a variety of home-
made treats will be on sale.
Grounds for Good is a free
event with all donations and pro-
ceeds benefiting New Visions
Homeless Shelter. Doors will open
at 7:30 p.m. Music will begin at 8
p.m. Free childcare will be avail-
able from 8 to 9:30 p.m. To find out
more, visit meetwithGod.com. To
find out more about the art of
Seth Camm, visit sethcam.com.
Grounds for Good Coffee House is Oct. 5
ride on the fire truck.
Activities for adults will also
take place during the open house
parents and any adults attend-
ing will learn how to extinguish a
stovetop fire, and learn how to op-
erate a fire extinguisher.
A moon bounce, fire safety
games and a display of antique
fire equipment are a few other
open house activities, along with
snacks and refreshments.
Worrell mentioned Sparky the
Fire Dog and Pluggie the Fire Hy-
drant Robot will be there to take
pictures with the children.
The Maple Shade and Lenola
Fire Companies will provide
truck rides and the Moorestown
Emergency Squad will have
equipment demonstrations.
The fire prevention activities
dont stop there. Although
Moorestown is hosting Fire Pre-
vention Month in October, there
are more activities in the winter.
Worrell designed Adopt a Fire
Hydrant in 2001. The program is
specifically designed for fourth-
grade students. Although the
event doesnt take place until
there is snow on the ground, par-
ents are asked to sign consent
forms and each child will be as-
signed a hydrant that is close to
their home.
Worrell said that there are no
hydrant assignments on the main
roads. Hydrants will be assigned
on back streets for safety pur-
poses.
The winter activity allows the
children to take part in keeping
the community prepared just in
case of a fire. When it snows, the
children will have to go to their
assigned hydrant, and with their
own shovel and properly dressed
they will have to clear a 36-inch
area around the hydrant. Creat-
ing this path allows firefighters to
gain access to the hydrant and
hook up a hose.
According to a news release,
the activity helps build respect
for fire safety.
All who participate in Adopt a
Fire Hydrant are invited to the
firehouse in the spring to receive
a t-shirt and will have the oppor-
tunity to be in a group photo.
Worrell said that they make
sure to tell the children to wear
their shirts the next time they go
to school.
Applications are available at
the Moorestown Upper Elemen-
tary School Principals Office
around Nov. 1.
The Moorestown Annual Great
Escape Contest is another activi-
ty the department has planned
for children in second grade.
Children will be given an 11 by
14 piece of grid paper to plan out
an emergency escape plan. Each
plan will be submitted when com-
pleted, but there is still a pending
date for the submission.
On the grid paper, students will
need to plan two ways to escape
each room, the location of every
fire detector, and identify a family
meeting place on top of a few
other factors in the Home Escape
Plan, according to Worrell.
Second graders from each of
the elementary school shave one
winner and one grand prize win-
ner is chosen from the five
schools. Each winner from the
five schools will receive a certifi-
cate of participation. The grand
prize winner will receive a $100
savings bond and a chance to ride
on the fire truck during the An-
nual Moorestown Lions Club
Christmas Parade in December.
For more information about
fire prevention and the events the
Moorestown Fire Department is
hosting visit www.moorestown-
fire.org.

East Gate has applied for a $1
million liquor license, but the ap-
plication process is still under-
way, Button said.
Since councils first approval
on Monday, Sept. 10, the
Moorestown Mall might have a
new resident.
Marc Vetri, world-renowned
chef and owner of various Italian
restaurants in Philadelphia,
signed a lease agreement with
PREIT to open a restaurant in the
Moorestown Mall.
PREIT spokeswoman Judy
Trias was unable to go into detail
about the agreement considering
council recently awarded four
liquor licenses to PREIT and the
agreement is not officially set in
stone. However, details about the
restaurant and the possibility of
opening more will be announced
in the near future, Trias said.
Vetri Tweeted his signature on
the lease agreement with a brief
caption saying, Lets see if you
can figure out what this means!!!!
BOOM!!!
I think its great to have some-
one like Vetri come to our town,
Button said.
Vetri trained in Italy and with-
in two years of opening his
restaurant in Philadelphia, was
named one of Food and Wines
Ten Best New Chefs. A few other
of Vetris accomplishments in-
clude the opening of four restau-
rants in the Philadelphia area
Vetri opened in 1998, Osteria
opened in 2007, and Amis opened
in 2010. The newest restaurant,
Alla Spina, opened its doors in
February of 2012 and the opening
of the New Jersey Osteria loca-
tion will make five restaurants
for Vetri.
Food Networks Iron Chef
viewers also caught a glimpse of
Vetris cooking prowess in 2010
when Vetri walked away with the
Iron Chef title after defeating
Iron Chef Michael Symon.
The restaurant will mimic the
Osteria restaurant in Philadel-
phia. Vetri said the Italian dishes,
wine selection, and atmosphere
will resemble the original loca-
tion.
Vetri is looking forward to
opening the restaurant in a famil-
iar area. Between family mem-
bers, coworkers and customers in
New Jersey, Vetri knows the area
well.
I am just looking forward to
hopefully starting a little renais-
sance out there, Vetri said.

about Vetri and his restaurants,

Winter is coming!
Time to think about your roof's abiIity to protect your home and famiIy.
Is your roof ready?
A roof protects your home from the elements and is the main defense against water
entering your home.
Most people don`t even think about the roof until a leak occurs and are not aware of
damages that may have already taken place over time. Roof leaks are rarely noticed
as soon as they begin to leak and generally cause costly repairs to more than just the
roof.
You might not even be aware of a leak if water is leaking down inside a wall.
Unknown leaking allows mold to thrive and be a health risk to you and your family.
Do you reaIIy want to wait untiI it Ieaks?
Simply look up to see if something doesn`t look right. Replacing the shingles now is more cost efficient than replacing
the shingles, plywood and possibly rafters as well as any interior damage.
