Description of the Site

Treutlen Middle High School is located in Soperton, Georgia, and is positioned in the southeastern part of the state, just seventy-two miles below Macon and ninety-six miles west of Savannah. The Treutlen County School district is comprised of one elementary school and one middle/high school. According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, Treutlen County has a total population of 6,885. Almost twenty-five percent of the population is below the age of 18. Sixty-five percent of the population is Caucasian, thirty-three percent is African-American, and less than one percent is of another nationality. Less than ten percent of the county population has a bachelors degree or higher, while seventy-three percent are high school graduates. The total median household income from 2006 to 2010 is $36, 467 and almost twenty-five percent are below the poverty level. Treutlen Middle/High School currently has 279 middle school students and 280 high school students enrolled. Of those students, there are 25 middle school students and 18 high school students that have individualized education plans with the special education program. There are 31 certified teachers, three administrators, five paraprofessionals, and three specialized personnel. The media center is centrally located between the middle and high school hallways. There is one full time paraprofessional that serves in the media center and one media specialist who serves half-day between the elementary and middle/high school libraries. There are currently 11,200 volumes in the TMHS library. Books are purchased yearly, as well as weeded constantly, according to the media specialist. With only 559 students, the book per student ration is approximately 1

20 books per student. The librarian currently uses Spectrum software and is the only person, other than the library clerk, that is able to search the catalog of volumes held in the library. The librarian stated that they are switching to Destiny next school year. There are eight computers housed in the media center and five carts of 25 laptops that can be checked out by teachers for classroom use. There is one SmartBoard in the media center, two portable projectors, and five digital cameras available for checkout. Treutlen Middle/High School has other technology that is currently being used by the students and faculty. All teachers have either a SmartBoard or Promethean Board in their classrooms, and have for the past three years. There are also SmartBoard wireless slates that can be checked out for classroom use. Last school year, a technology grant funded IPods for advanced placement students. These students are able to use the IPods in some of their classes. The teachers of these classes keep the IPods in their classrooms until the end of the school year. IPads are available for administration only at this time. Computer Applications I is offered to students in grades nine through twelve, and there are currently 102 students enrolled in this class. It is offered seven times by two business teachers at Treutlen High School. There are a total of eight special education students enrolled in these classes. Of these students, reading levels vary from below to above grade levels. Reading levels for three of the special education students are severely low, as they are pulled out to their special education resource teacher for some testing and other individual assignments that require a great deal of reading comprehension.

Curriculum Review

Collection Evaluation
In going about a collection review of the Treutlen Middle/High School media center, I began first by asking the library clerk for assistance in finding materials related to the curriculum I chose. She immediately led me to the 500s section which is in the non-fiction section, and helped me locate books about various careers. Most of the books in this section included careers that were technical in subject area. I later was able to seek assistance with the media specialist, and she helped me evaluate the collection by doing the following: examining the collection visually and directly, obtaining a

bibliography list, examining circulation statistics of the items pertaining to this unit of study, and obtaining the average age of the resources available. By beginning with a visual inspection, I took notice of how the library was organized. The library begins with a reference section and the walls are skirted with nonfiction books, followed by fiction in the middle shelves. All shelves are tall shelves because of the age of children served at the middle/high school, and Dewey decimal numbers are labeled on the outside of the shelves. There are no reading level labels or other signage, except for one on the references section and one for the non-fiction section. I feel that more signage would assist patrons in finding their way around the library. The librarian also helped me find materials related to this unit in the 300s section. The librarian and I were not able to locate any materials related to careers and the economy in the fiction section. We were also unable to find many materials from a multicultural view. Two found were Hispanic Scientists and Native American Scientists, both copyrighted in 1996. In searching biographies, the keywords used included careers, resumes, and economy. One non-print resource was found, which was a video dealing with work ethics. Most of the career books were found in the 330s but others were cataloged by topics, such as interior design, which was found in the 700s. A total of 163 resources were found that related to the curriculum of this career unit. Although some of these books contained valid information that would still be accurate today, many of them were very outdated and could potentially mislead students with invalid information. An example is one book entitled, Exploring careers as a computer technician, with a copyright date of 1985. Because computers have changed drastically since 1985, I am 6

sure that the majority of information this book holds is obsolete to one who wishes to pursue that field today. Another resource located was The Encyclopedia of careers and vocational science, with a copyright date of 1981. The media specialist quickly informed me that this should be cataloged in the reference section, as it had been cataloged in the 300s, and that it was quite outdated. This is a resource that I would definitely like to replace with a newer version, being that 1981 was the year that I was born. The average age of the resources found on this unit of study in the library was 1985. Although there were some books found that had copyright dates as late as 2003, there werent many in the 2000s and 2003 was the newest found. Even though many of these books were very old, most all of them were in very good condition. This could be interpreted as not being used much and one of the main reasons could be the invalidity that the old age of materials proposes. I do believe that a small percentage of what is available could be used by the students, but a majority of it could not be because of the age of the materials. Alarmingly, the librarian was only able to find three resources dealing with the economics standards and all of these were outdated as well. Of the resources found, a majority of them were located in the 350s range. In the 300s section, 88 books had been checked out since August 2011. Because most of the resources related to the curriculum were found in the 350s range, it is hard to speculate exactly how many of those came from that specific section. These numbers suggest that less than half of these resources are being used. A summary of collection needs includes:

1. Copyright dates within the last 5 to 10 years should be collected to enable students to have more up-to-date information on all aspects of the unit including resume writing, careers, and economics. 2. Choose fiction resources for the unit since there are none currently in the library. 3. Choose multicultural resources that pertain to todays global economy and career opportunities. 4. Find other formats to accommodate special needs children.

Budget Summary
Using the book vendors Barnes and Noble, Booklist Online, Mackin, and TitleWave, I was able to find a broad range of materials related to this unit. To accommodate different learning styles, as well as lower reading level or reluctant readers, audiovisual materials, DVDs, and e-books were added to the materials order. The total needed for the materials chosen is $3,876.64. The age of materials chosen is no older than five to ten years of age. Also, the encyclopedia of careers has been replaced with a more current version to serve 21st century students and patrons. A portion of multicultural and fiction books were selected to provide patrons a more broad range of relevant materials.
