International qualifications: what do they mean for citizens? A new Cedefop study opens a discussion on international qualifications: what they are, how they are managed, and how they may affect national qualifications and standards as well as the common EU tools for vocational education and training. http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/downloadmanager.aspx?id=20266&lang=en&type=publication 2012-2013 school and academic calendars Published by the Eurydice network, the school calendar contains data on the length of the school year in each country, the start and the end of each school year, and the timing and length of school holidays. It covers both primary and secondary education. The academic calendar shows how the academic year is structured (beginning of the year, term times, holidays and examinations periods). Variations depending on the type of study programme (university or non-university) are also indicated. It stresses the need for an appropriate education policy placing intercultural competence at the heart of all education. It also stresses the importance of the development, on an everyday basis, of the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge needed for mutual understanding. The main tools to support active ageing are in the hands of policymakers in the Member States. However, the EU can mobilise a wide range of policy instruments to support national governments and other stakeholders in their efforts. Hence, the brochure covers existing measures at EU level but also looks at others that are still being discussed, such as legislation in the pipeline and proposals for funding programmes in the new 2014-2020 budget cycle. Eye On Earth Eye on Earth brings together scientific information about the environment with feedback and observations of millions of people. Each organisation is presented through a short description, its motivation and EVS experience, the themes of work and contact details. CL!CK About It: worldwide photo competition CL!CK is a series of photo competitions about the changing world, aiming to create a mosaic of images from all corners of the globe to showcase how local communities and people are striving to survive in the ever-changing society. The theme for this year is Crises & Disasters. Professional and amateur photographers should submit photos that capturing natural disasters, political uprisings, conflicts, financial crisis, development crisis, urban life and climate change. Two overall winners (one for professional and one for amateur) will be selected to go on a theme-related reporting trip organised by the European Journalism Centre. Flights, accommodation and meals will be covered. Five runners-up photographers (three for professional and two for amateur) will receive cash prizes. Deadline: 29th October 2012. The competition is organised by the European Journalism Centre (EJC) in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Find out more: http://new.clickaboutit.net CIPE Youth Essay Competition 2012 The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is inviting students and young professionals worldwide, from 18 to 30 years old, to share their ideas on how to create opportunities for youth to strengthen democracy and the private sector in their own countries. They will have to write an essay of 1,500 up to 2,500 words on the following categories: 1. Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Beyond technology; 2. Inclusive Growth: The entrepreneurial environment for scaling up business; 3. Social transformations: The role of entrepreneurs in building democratic societies. For each category, CIPE will publish the winning first, second, and third place essays. Winning authors will also receive a cash prize. One grand prize winner will be invited on an all-expense-paid trip to attend CIPE's upcoming Democracy that Delivers for Entrepreneurs conference in the United States, which is planned for April 2013. Young students will be given the opportunity to take part in a translation test that will take place on the same day in all EU countries: 27th November 2012. Pupils will be able to decide which of the European Union's official languages they want to translate to and from. European E-learning Award EureleA 2013 EureleA 2013, the European eLearning Award for best-practice projects in eLearning for job training and further education, has been launched. Users of successful eLearning projects for teaching and learning with digital media within Europe (geographically) can apply in the following two categories: didactics and technology. All detailed information about the documentation to send is available here: http://tinyurl.com/32xnfah ISWA Competition 2012 The competition aims to stimulate curiosity and engage young people in science through arts. The idea is to present science with its creative and emotional aspects, showing the links between the arts and science. Young people from 14 to 20 years old from all EU Member States, countries associated to FP7 and the Russian Federation are invited to join this competition. They will have to create an artistic work in one of the following categories: cinema, contemporary art, modern dance, imaging and literature. Entrants can compete either individually or in groups. Groups can be composed also by school classes, which are encouraged to work under the supervision of one or several teachers. Deadline to submit entries is 31st October 2012. Find out more: http://www.iswaproject.eu Water Cooperation and World Water Day 2013 Contest The year 2013 will be the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation. Everyone, worldwide and of any age, is invited to join the contest and contribute to the campaign by creating a short and catchy slogan written in English, easy to understand and appealing to a wide audience. Entrants can submit as many entries as they want. A committee comprising representatives from UN-Water, UNESCO and their partners will select the top three entries. An online poll taking place from 30th November to 25th December 2012 will determine the overall winner of the contest. The author of the winning slogan will be invited to the kickoff meeting of the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation 2013 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, in January 2013. EU High Level Group presents recommendations to increase level of literacy in Europe The final report and recommendations on how to tackle low literacy levels in Europe will be presented by the EU high level group of experts on literacy (chaired by Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands) to Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou at a Presidency conference on literacy, on 6th September 2012 in Cyprus. Almost 73 million adults in the EU are low-skilled and the results of the most recent PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) survey show that one in five 15 year olds in the EU has poor reading skills. Launched in February 2011, the high level group has examined research, gathered evidence and analysed the most successful literacy programmes and policy initiatives in Europe. The report's recommendations reflect discussions within the group as well as the input received through their consultations with a wide variety of other experts, organisations and stakeholders. http://europa.eu/rapid Aarhus to be European Capital of Culture in Denmark in 2017 The independent selection panel assessing the cities applying to future European Capitals of Culture has recommended Aarhus for the title in 2017. Aarhus beat off the challenge of Snderborg to represent Denmark. Cyprus is the other Member State in which a city will host the title in five years' time. This represents a widening of the gap between agreed and actual working hours in the EU15, and a narrowing of the gap in the Member States that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. 15th-21st October 2012: European SME Week The week will provide information on what the EU and national, regional and local authorities are offering as support to micro, small and medium-sized businesses as well as providing an opportunity for entrepreneurs, young people, business organisations, business support providers, public authorities, educational institutions to organise an event under the umbrella of the European SME Week. As part of the week, the European SME Summit will take place on 17th October, in Brussels focusing on Women's Entrepreneurship. Find out more: http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/initiatives/sme-week 19th October 2012: European Night Without Accidents The European Night Without Accidents is an awareness campaign organised each year in nightclubs all over Europe on the 3rd Saturday of October. The action takes place in two phases. First, at the entrance of the nightclubs the volunteers, aged between 17 and 29 years old, encourage each group to choose a designated driver, who agrees to make a promise: they commit to be sober when they sit behind the wheel of their vehicle. The volunteers ask the clubbers who want to participate to wear a bracelet to be recognisable. When the designated drivers leave the nightclub, they are given the opportunity to undergo a breath test to check if they have honoured their commitment. In some nightclubs, drivers will also be asked, on a voluntary basis, to do a drug test. If they are under the legal limit, the designated drivers are rewarded with small presents. If this is not the case, they are encouraged to leave their car on the side or to hand the keys to a friend who did not drink any alcohol or use drugs. The conference will look at the progress achieved and give guidance for shaping the work of the Council of Europe in human rights and citizenship education in the next years.
