From Sanford, FL walking 10 miles a day from Sanford, FL to Washington, DC

July 6, 2012 August 6, 2012
With Justice Peace Walk is a one-month walk through the eastern United States, starting in Sanford, FL., and the city of the controversial killing of Trayvon Martin. The Walk will retrace the history of injustices of incarcerated and murdered African American men. We will retrace by foot and sometimes van or bus, crossing from the South into the Nations capital Washington, D.C. Beginning in Eatonville, the first African American township in the US, the journey will move through southern states, where the cradle to the prison pipeline has had the deepest influence on this lucrative prison industrial complex system. Finally, the Walk will continue to the Capital, Washington, DC where according to professor of Law, Edgar Cahn, judicial relief has not been forthcoming because the requirement for injured parties to prove discriminatory intent set forth in Washington vs. Davis, 426 U.S. 229 (1976). Thwarted legal efforts are the solutions to dismantle structural racism stemming from this systematic practices and policies of governmental agencies. The Walk is a walk for the body, mind and soul for those that were murdered, those that are incarcerated, and those that have become wardens and institutionalized, even those expelled, suspended and placed in detentions unjustly. By acknowledging and embracing the terrible history of the prison industrial complex and radical oppression, it is hoped the journey will be a step in healing of the wounds inflicted even until today, and also organize a movement to end mass incarceration through the growth of the prison industrial complexs largest private prison company, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Walking through different southern communities we acknowledge the different community needs and find the individual needs of the families affected. We will offer vigils, forums and offerings along the way for the spirits of those who suffered and died in various communities. We will also visit sites known for murders through slavery such as, slave quarters and lynching trees attesting to the dignity in the face of slavery and racial oppression. We walk through this history to nourish seeds of consciousness, so that we change the next century, to a more humane, equitable world where the ravages of racism no longer plague our minds and the human spirits is liberated to grow through truth but also through our collective voice and organized fronts. Now after the arrest of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin we are still in need of Justice. We are still outraged for action at the plight of Black boys and Black men The New Jim Crow. Please contact us regarding this social change national peace walk from Sanford, FL. to Washington, DC in coordinating against "deliberate indifference" and the racial disparities because of the Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) of black males. (Please read on Edgar Cahn - An offer they can't refuse: Racial Disparities and Deliberate Indifference) We are several families affected by unfair expulsions, suspensions, referrals, institutionalizations, incarcerations and deaths of our black males. We want alternatives and Justice to the intentional disregard of the law, in order to dismantle the cradle to the prison pipeline. We would like to start our walk on July 6, 2012 from Sanford, FL walking 5 10 miles a day ending August 6, 2012 ending at the Department of Justice. We need legal help and community power to change legislation on the terms of these endangered species.

Michelle Alexanders Movement on the New Jim Crow

There are more African Americans under correctional control today -- in prison or jail, on probation or parole -than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began! Michelle Alexander Michelle Alexander, Ohio State University law professor, former Supreme Court clerk, and former director of the American Civil Liberties Unions Racial Justice Project, uses the term New Jim Crow to describe the inordinate numbers of African Americans, especially men, who are stripped of their civil rights by the criminal justice system. In her book by the same name she explores how similar this system is to the discriminatory laws of the early 20 th century and just how deeply this caste system is engrained in American society. The popular opinion in the United States today seems to be that after the triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement, and, more recently, after the election of our first Black president, Barack Obama, America has moved beyond racism and we now live in an age of colorblindness. The blatantly discriminatory Jim Crow laws were repealed decades ago, but today the criminal justice system separates an extraordinary percentage of the African American community from society either by direct incarceration or traps them in a parallel social universe by permanently branding them ex-convicts. In most states, upon release from prison, ex-convicts are denied basic civil and human rightsincluding the right to vote, the right to serve on juries, as well as exclusion from employment, food stamps, public housing, and student loans to say nothing of the unquantifiable social stigma. Our society no longer accepts race as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, or social contempt. Yet, it is perfectly legal to discriminate against convicted criminals in nearly all the ways in which Jim Crow laws discriminated against African Americans. Once labeled a felon, even for a minor drug crime or a non-violent offence, the old forms of discrimination are suddenly legal again. In Professor Alexanders words, we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it. Alexander shows us how the War on Drugs and other Get Tough crime policies have decimated communities of color, and how the U.S. criminal justice system effectively functions as a contemporary system of racial control, even as it formally adheres to the principle of colorblindness. Professor Alexanders book, The New Jim Crow, challenges the civil rights communityand all of usto place mass incarceration at the forefront of a new movement for racial justice in America focusing on Black and Brown Males.
