Generally server manufacturers furnish instrumentation agents and system tools for free and these are either found on the CD-ROM provided with the server or, on the manufacturers web site. Unless mentioned otherwise, the manufacturers instrumentation agent must be installed on the monitored server for Hardware Sentry to function properly. For details on how to install the required instrumentation agent on the systems, please refer to the platform-specific guides available on the Hardware Sentry page of the Sentry Software website.
For details on what hardware components are detected on each system, please see the Connectors & Platforms Reference Table in the Reference Guide and click the "Connector Name" applicable to your system/typical platform.
What's Changed
On EMC disk arrays, mirrors, snapshots and clones volumes are no longer discovered and monitored On SMI-S compliant disk arrays (EMC, Hitachi, HP EVA), dormant devices no longer trigger a warning When monitoring a remote Linux system, the Linux Network connectors availability is now fully tested. In case of a failure (credentials, network connection, etc.), the corresponding network card objects triggered alarms instead of being put offline and marked as failed connector On IBM xSeries servers running Linux, logical volumes (RAIDs) are no longer reported as physical disks On NetApp filers, aggregates flagged as redirect are no longer reported in warning On Sun Solaris systems, the number of errors that occurred on memory modules is reported with the ErrorCount parameter On Sun Solaris systems, illegal requests on physical disks are no longer reported with the ErrorCount parameter and therefore no longer trigger any alert On Sun Solaris systems, unplumbed network interfaces are now also discovered and monitored On Sun Fire/Enterprise M3000, M4000, M5000, M8000 and M9000 systems, the following objects are now monitored: DC-to-DC converters, I/O expansion units (I/O boards, power supplies, uplink and downlink cards), CPU and memory boards, Crossbar and Clock units, Operator panel and XSCF units
10
Fixed Issues
CISCO
On Cisco MDS fiber switches, the status of clocks is now properly reported On Cisco MDS fiber switches with a high number of ports, the product failed to discover the fiber ports
HP
On older HP ProLiant systems, an error message was displayed in the System Output Window of the PATROL Console about the collection of the status of the enclosure. On some HP ProLiant systems with no SNMP agent enabled, the status of power supplies was incorrectly translated On some HP NetServer systems, the HP Instant TopTools agent was not properly located On HP-UX systems, some SAS disk drives were not properly attached to the appropriate disk controller instance On HP-UX systems, some physical disk objects were not properly attached to the appropriate disk controller instance, or sometimes were not discovered at all
IBM
On some IBM xSeries systems with the IBM Director Agent 5.2.x, incorrect thresholds were set for voltage sensors, leading to false alerts On IBM AIX systems, in some cases memory modules were not properly discovered On IBM AIX systems, some disk controllers were not properly detected On IBM AIX systems, the discovery failed to detect physical disks, or in other cases the physical disks were mistakenly marked as missing On IBM DS disk arrays managed through SMCli, devices reported as Near expiration didnt trigger a warning On IBM 3584 tape libraries, the status of robotic pieces was not properly collected
Sun
On Sun Solaris systems with SNMP enabled, some network interfaces were incorrectly reported as physical adapters, e.g. lo0, lpfs0, jnet, dman, aggr0, clprivnet, sppp0 and similar On Sun Solaris systems, the status of physical disks with no s2 slice (typically when hosting a ZFS filesystem) was not properly tested On Sun Solaris systems, network interfaces with no IP address were not discovered On Sun Solaris systems, a failure of the picld daemon (or the underlying instrumentation chip and driver) caused false alarms on fans, LEDs and power supplies. On Sun Solaris systems, Intel and AMD multi-core processors were not completely discovered On Sun Solaris systems, tape drives were sometimes not properly detected On Sun M8000 and M9000 systems, processors and memory modules on separate boards were not properly discovered and monitored On Sun Fire/Enterprise M3000, M4000, M5000, M8000 and M9000 systems, power supplies were sometimes reported with an unknown status
11
Fujitsu
On Fujitsu-Siemens PRIMERGY systems, instances were created for disabled temperature sensors, causing error messages in the System Output Window of the PATROL Console On some Fujitsu-Siemens PRIMERGY systems, failed batteries in the RAID controllers were not properly reported
Clariion
On EMC disk arrays, volumes that were temporarily created for snapshots, clones and mirrors could trigger false missing device alerts.
VMware
On some servers running VMware ESXi, the discovery failed to recognize SMI-S or SMASH-compliant disk controllers Depending on the model and vendor of the server, systems running VMware ESXi (3.0, 3.5 or 4.0) were not fully supported and disk controllers, disks and volumes were not properly monitored.

Load the MS_HARDWARE_SENTRY1.kml file in the profile. This will add the two new connector-related classes. If you do not load the new classes in the profile, Hardware Sentry will work almost properly except that the profile will not be aware when a hardware agent used by Hardware Sentry has failed.
Packages
The Hardware Sentry packages are available on the BMC Software Web site and the Sentry Software Web site. There are two packages, each of which can be used to install Hardware Sentry on every PATROL component (Agent, Console, etc.): For Windows systems: mshw_WINDOWS_1500.exe For UNIX and Linux systems: mshw_UNIX_1500.tar Each package can be used to install Hardware Sentry on every PATROL component: Agent, Console, Console Server etc.
The Hardware Sentry packages are designed for use with the BMC Software Installation Utility (formerly known as Thorium). They need to be merged with the latest available version of the BMC Software Installation Utility. Please see instructions.
Licensing
You need to purchase a license in order to use Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL. The KM is available in several licensed packages.
To monitor the hardware of servers, you need one of the following licensed products:
BMC Performance Manager for Hardware Sentry Software Monitoring for BMC Performance Manager Hardware Monitoring These products are licensed per CPU (physical processor) of the monitored systems.
To monitor the hardware of storage devices, you need the following licensed product:
Sentry Software Monitoring for BMC Performance Manager Storage Monitoring This product is licensed per device connected to the SAN.
Trial Period
You can install and use the product for a 30 day trial period without purchasing a license. To enable the trial period, you do not need any temporary password or license key since Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL does not have any license key mechanism. However, by using the product without a purchasing a license, you are still bound to its license terms which require you to uninstall the product at the end of the 30 day trial period if you choose not to purchase the corresponding license.
14
Targeted Computers
Like most Knowledge Modules for PATROL, you need to install Hardware Sentry on the following components of your PATROL architecture: Every managed system with a PATROL Agent Every PATROL Console (Classic) that will show hardware-related information and alerts The Console Server PATROL Central Web Edition
License Keys
Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL does not require any license key in order to work.
15
16
17
WBEM on Windows (Network adapters) on Windows systems Linux Network cards on Linux systems
18
On HP Netserver computers
The HP TopTools Agent
On HP NetServer computers, Hardware Sentry requires the HP Instant TopTools Agents to be installed on each managed system. The HP TopTools agent can be downloaded for free on the HP Web site at the following address: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?locBasepartNum=ns-105482&lang=English+%28US%29&prodTypeId=18964&prodSeriesId=305704&locale=en_US
19
If successfully installed, the following connector should be detected by Hardware Sentry: HP-UX
On HP 9000 computers, Hardware Sentry will only monitor processors, network adapters and physical disks.
20
The IBM Director agent can be downloaded for free on the IBM Web site at the following address: http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/systems_management/xseries_sm/dwnl.html
21
On Sun servers
No agent needed
On Sun computers with the Sun Solaris operating system, Hardware Sentry does not require any agent to be installed on the managed systems. The SNMP layer is not required either.
22
Depending on the platform, Hardware Sentry may not show any environmental information (temperatures, voltages, fans speed and power supplies status). A few Sun Solaris-based computers dont expose their internal environmental sensors.
To know if Hardware Sentry will be able to monitor the environment of your Sun server, you can execute the following command from the shell: # /usr/platform/`uname i`/sbin/prtdiag v If the output of this command shows environment-related information, then Hardware Sentry will be able to show it in the PATROL Console.
On VMWare ESX/ESXi
Monitoring of ESX4 servers is done using the VMWare ESX4i connector. The Patrol Agent and Hardware KM will need to be installed remotely. Monitoring of ESX3i servers is done by either installing the manufacturer's agent on the VMWare host linux (subject to disk space requirements) or by using the VMWare ESXi (ESX3i) connector. If both options are possible, the manufacturer's agent method should be used as it collects more parameters. The Patrol Agent and Hardware KM can in installed locally if using the manufacturer's agent, otherwise it will need to be installed remotely. Monitoring of ESX3 servers is done by installing the manufacturer's agent. The Patrol Agent and Hardware can be installed locally or remotely. For all versions, the Manufacturer's customized version of ESX should be used if available.
Remote installation of the Patrol Agent and Hardware KM, using the ESX3/4 connector
Install the Patrol Agent and Hardware KM on a remote machine. This machine can be another server or a virtual machine on the ESX Server. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Run the Add a Remote System Wizard on the monitoring Server. Enter the hostname of the ESX host (not one of the virtual machines). Select System Type "Blade Chassis - Out of Band Management Card. Next, select VMWare ESX4i (ESX4) or VMWare ESXi (ESX3i). If the server has an HBA, select SMI-S Compliant HBAs aswell. Next, set the port to 5989 and tick "Encrypt Data". Enter Login information. (Usernames / Passwords are the same as those used by vSphere). Click Next, and then Finish.
23
Local installation of the Manufacturer's Agent. Remote installation of the Patrol Agent and Hardware KM.
The Manufacturer's Agent (IBM Director, Dell OpenManage, HP Insight Manager) should be installed on the ESX Host Linux OS. If no ESX agent is available, the corresponding Redhat Agent can be used. Install the Patrol Agent and Hardware KM on a remote machine. This machine can be another server or a virtual machine on the ESX Server. Run the Add a Remote System Wizard on the monitoring Server and follow the same procedure as you would for remotely monitoring a normal Linux Server.
