Simon Farrington, business development editor for Media Wales, said: We are all aware that the last couple of years have seen the worldwide economy stagnate and confidence take a knock. Wales has not been immune. But now is the time to do more than talk about a recovery; we would urge employers to take a positive view on growth whether that be through employing full-time or part-time, skilled or unskilled staff. Whether it be school-leavers, university graduates, long-term unemployed, people looking to get back into work after a career break or those wishing to change jobs, we are encouraging employers to offer opportunities. Students find career in law firm appealing

STUDENTS in Bridgend have been involved in a work placement scheme with Welsh law firm Morgan Cole. The Growing Ambitions scheme gives young people in social housing association accommodation the chance to spend a week with Morgan Cole. Mentored by trainee solicitors, the scheme includes the opportunity to spend a day in the life of a lawyer, attending court, taking part in workshops, and time with human resources professionals who give tips on interview techniques and completing applications forms. Katie Lambert, 16, of Betws, Bridgend, says the experience has been of great benefit. Im studying my A-Levels at Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen and doing a course in law at Bridgend College, she said. Having the opportunity to spend a week with solicitors at Morgan Cole has been a fantastic experience. Joanna Rees, a partner with Morgan Cole, said: Social mobility in the UK is lagging behind other nations. We must work together to support our young people and grow ambitions.

Joshua flying through apprenticeship scheme

TRAINEE pilot Joshua Pegg is as excited about his new apprenticeship as he is about getting behind the controls of a little two-seater private plane. The former Treorchy Comprehensive pupil, 19, from Porth, has been taken on by Bridgend firm Clarity Copiers as part of an initiative backed by Bridgend College and the Welsh Government. Clarity Copiers is based on the Crosby Industrial Estate at Wildmill, Bridgend, and has increased its workforce from just two people in 2008 to 10. Turnover has increased in the same period from 70,000 to 1.2m. Joshua said: I was in Treorchy Comprehensive and wanted to get a job after leaving school as I am a hands-on person. I service photocopiers on-site and in the office and install machines. There is also some IT work. Im a musician and I enjoy IT and design technology. I like to see how things are done, rather than be told how its done and so work and an apprenticeship is better for me. Service engineer Phil Barrett said: Youre pretty much getting the equivalent of a degree once you are qualified in this job. It can take you into other areas. Sharp is our main brand and they run all the courses we do. They are the ones we stock, the brand that we sell predominantly. He added that it was important to have apprentices and train them in-house. Clarity Copiers claims its reputation was built on good service, a good appearance, and the ability to talk to the customer and resolve problems. Youngsters on the scheme will learn customer relations skills during day release at Bridgend College. The apprenticeship means Joshua will qualify after two years. Joshua says the apprenticeship is a welcome alternative to an expensive three years at university. It also means he can live at home and devote time to his twin passions, training for his private pilots licence and performing as a percussionist with various ensembles. Matthew Williams, Bridgend Colleges workbased learning manager, said: The college is extremely enthusiastic about the initiative. The colleges input will help the youngsters to establish sustained, successful careers.

Elizabeth met at the Philharmonic pub in Cardiff city centre after they had both been out with friends. Gareth, who is a fervent Cardiff City fan, had been to Preston to watch the Bluebirds lose 6-0 on the way to missing out in the play-offs in 2009, and was drowning his sorrows with his friend. Gareth, originally from Bedwas, Caerphilly, said: It had been a long day but my first memory of Liz is her waving her sparkling pink shoes at me while I stood propped up at the bar. We started dancing and a week later we went on our first date to Cardiff Bay. We had a great time and our relationship blossomed from there.

How they met: Gareth and

proposed to Elizabeth on Christmas Eve 2010 at the couples flat in Heath. He said: After weeks of agony getting my hands on the ring I had ordered from Israel as postal problems and heavy snow had delayed its arrival to the UK, I had planned to propose on Christmas Day. I made a giant cracker and placed the ring inside ready for Liz to pull and discover on the big day. But I came home drunk on the Christmas Eve and couldnt contain my excitement, so did it there and then. My memory of it is a little hazy but Liz assures me it was very romantic. were wed by Rev Michael John on a sunny afternoon at St Davids Church in Groesfaen. Elizabeth wore a dress made by Laura May of Crwys Road, Cardiff, and was transported to the church in a Beauford Convertible supplied by Kennedy Classics of Cyncoed, Cardiff. The service was held before 126 guests, who went on to the Bear Hotel in Cowbridge

for the reception. Gareth said: It was an amazing day. After months of planning it was great that everything came together on the day. Also a week of wind and rain beforehand had us worried as we were looking forward to using the courtyard at the Bear before the reception. On the morning of the wedding the wind stopped, clouds parted and everything went smoothly from there. Elizabeth, originally from Creigiau, Cardiff, said: I was nervous when I woke up on the morning of the wedding but by the time I arrived at the church I was just excited. I enjoyed the ceremony and I think I could see a little tear in Gareths eye. When we arrived at the Bear for the reception there was not a cloud in the sky and all of our friends and family were there to welcome us. It was amazing. The food was excellent and the staff at the Bear looked after us really well throughout the day and the evening party. We both hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did.

DISABLED workers moving to a private employer after their factories close will receive worse pensions, unions have claimed. Unite and the GMB accused the Government of turning the screws on Remploy workers who are set to lose their jobs. Unite regional officer Kevin Hepworth said: This is a bombshell for

those workers at Remploy factories that will be sold off. This is a cruel blow, hacking away at the retirement incomes of workers with disabilities. The government has announced plans to close 27 factories by the end of the year, with a further nine facing an uncertain future, and 18 sites due to close or be sold-off next year.

Hospice bags plastic carrier cash

SHOPPERS have it in the bag for the George Thomas Hospice. At Sainsbury in Woodville Road, Cathays, Cardiff, money raised from the 5p carrier bag charge introduced in Wales last year has been donated to George Thomas Hospice Care. The store raised more than 532 for the charity based in Whitchurch, Cardiff, which has to raise 1.2m a year to carry out its core services caring for people and their families suffering with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses around Cardiff. Alex Hale, team leader at the store, said: We had an event in store where everyone could chose a charity to support and where the money will go and most of the staff chose the George Thomas Hospice. This is the fourth or fifth time weve raised money for them this year and weve always got the little tubs near the tills. All the staff and customers are brilliant and they are happy that this money has gone to the charity.
