Background The Literacy Cooperative is a 501 (C) 3 entity working on behalf of the community to raise literacy levels and ensure that all children, youth and adults in Greater Cleveland reach their highest potential for employment, self-sufficiency and lifelong-learning. The STEP Program (Supporting Tutors Engaging Pupils) is a structured tutoring program designed to help build reading and language skills in K-3rd grade students who are below grade level. The program uses a combination of two evidence based programs: Ready Readers and Book Buddies. Students will receive individualized, structured lessons consisting of reading, word play (phonics) and a writing exercise to practice the phonics skills learned within the context of the lesson. Lessons will be delivered for thirty minutes twice a week. Each participating child will be assessed to determine appropriate placement in the scope and sequence associated with the program and will be assessed at regular intervals to be sure he/she receives individualized support to address specific learning gaps. The goal of the program is to improve outcomes by helping students acquire the skills necessary for literacy success. Research shows that children who are not reading on grade level by the end of third grade usually fail to meet grade level expectations for reading in future years (Francis, Shaywitz, Stuebing, Shaywitz & Fletcher, 1996). If students do not acquire literacy skills prior to third grade, their chances of success in school are diminished. The National Research Council has determined that academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someones reading level at the end of third grade. A child who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school. (A Kid Counts Special Report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2010). Currently STEP is a school-based intervention. Given the documented importance of learning to read, an afterschool version of the tutoring program will be piloted with first grade students at the Warrensville Heights Librarys homework center in Warrensville Heights, Ohio during 2012-2013. How to Apply This is a contractual position. Compensation will be hourly based and commensurate with the appointees background and experience. If you are interested in applying for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to John LePelley, Director Early Literacy at jlepelley@literacycooperative.org. For more information on The Literacy Cooperative, please go to www.literacycooperative.org. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. We anticipate identifying a site coordinator by the end of October 2012.
