Annual Report 2010

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
The 2010 year for Brisbane Hockey Association Inc. (BHA), was a busy year and one of continuing improvement that saw a number of initiatives continued and implemented. In addition to continuing television coverage of BHL1 games, the successful operation of Burringbar Park through the Brisbane Hockey Management Group to maintain and improve Burringbar as a hockey facility was a welcome achievement. Continuing cooperation with BWHA was a key factor in successful management of Burringbar. Umpiring also saw progress with the umpiring sub-committee being active in umpire management and development. The work of Allen Schasser and committee members as a foundation for further development in 2011 is appreciated. Also of note was the promotion of one of our umpires to the Australian Hockey League panel congratulations to Adam Barry on a significant achievement. Looking back on 2010 there are many highlights to note including:

and commitment in achieving media coverage of Brisbane hockey. The weekly match reports and photos from BHL 1 games on the BHA website were popular once again with a wide audience as were the regular articles including colour photographs on hockey in Brisbane in the local Quest Community Newspapers where clubs are based. Lees work also provided a sound support to the TV coverage with the BHL Media Pack containing a wide range of details on players and clubs in the BHL competition. It is pleasing to note that a number of journalism students engaged as volunteers by Lee have since gained journalism appointments and one has released their first sports publication (Liam Hauser State of Origin: 30 Years). The continuing coverage is highly valued. Lee, thank you once again for your continuing efforts and those of your reporters to deliver valuable media coverage for Brisbane hockey. Also, thank you to club coaches and officials for supporting Lee with information and comments on your games.

In 2010 we continued our strong support and participation in State championships, achieving commendable results from Under 13 through to veterans as outlined below: U13 3rd & 6th Div 1; 1st Div 2 (3 teams) U15 3rd & 14th Div 1; 1st Div 2 (3 teams) U18 1st Div 1; 4th & 7th Div 2 (3 teams) Premier League 1st State Open 1st & 4th. Promoted to Premier League 2011. Over 35 - 1st Over 40 4th & 7th Over 45 2nd & 7th Over 50 Equal 1st & 6th Over 55 2nd & 4th It was pleasing to have the Open 1 team win the State Open championship and gain promotion to Premier League in 2011. Having two teams in Premier League gives us the opportunity to showcase many of our younger talented players. The opportunity now exists to develop a squad that can be the basis of the second Premier League team to ensure it is competitive to retain its place in Premier League. On behalf of BHA and our representative players, thank you to all coaches and managers for your efforts in the organisation and support of our representative teams. The Premier League and State Open Championships are in Brisbane in 2011 and will require the support of clubs and volunteers for us to continue to provide an enjoyable tournament that meets the needs of the competition as well as the off-field needs of players, officials and spectators across the playing times. Thank you to all who supported the Association in hosting Premier league this year, in particular Bruce and Veronica Luck for organising the BBQ tent a big effort which was well done again this year.

BURRINGBAR PARK
Burringbar continues to be operated by the Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc. (BHMG), an association between BHA, BWHA and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club which meets Brisbane City Council requirements and provides a partnership to manage and improve Burringbar. Negotiations with Brisbane City Council for a longer term lease for Burringbar are nearing completion with a five year lease expected to be issued by the end of 2010. The priority for BHMG in 2010 has been the operation of Burringbar on a commercial basis to ensure its financial viability to sustain replacement of the artificial surface. Successful operation on a commercial basis and the achievement of an operating profit means that Burringbar has the financial viability to commit to replacement of the artificial surface for the 2011 season. At the time of writing, the grant application for artificial surface replacement is under consideration in the second round of the Government Minor Facility program. While gaining a grant is a high priority with significant future financial benefits, even if unsuccessful the artificial surface replacement will proceed with funds from reserves and borrowings. The initial strategic and operational priorities have been to ensure the long term viability of Burringbar, in particular the replacement of the artificial surface. The result of the grant application and development of a sinking fund for the next replacement will be key factors in shaping the future strategic planning and prioritising further improvements to the centre. The demise of ShawSportz left Burringbar with no funds, an artificial surface at the end of its life as well as many maintenance issues. The success of BHMG in addressing these issues is appreciated and would not have been possible with the continuing commitment and work of representatives on BHMG, in particular Paul Saunders and Kathleen Proctor who took on the roles of Treasurer and Secretary. Thank you to Paul Saunders for the extensive work, including the valuable time away from his business to attend meetings and implement development and maintenance arrangements. I also note that Valley Hockey Club now holds the lease for Shaw Park following finalisation negotiations with the Brisbane City Council on the return of the lease following the demise of ShawSportz.

JOINT MEDAL DINNER FOR BHA AND BWHA

The Best and Fairest Medal Dinners for BHA and BWHA were held together at the Chifley Hotel (Lennons) in August. Congratulations to Jacob Whetton who was awarded the BHA Best and Fairest Medal and to Jake Farrell as BHA Rookie of the Year. Congratulations also to the players recognised as the best and fairest for their respective teams. The arrangements for the Best and Fairest Medal dinner for 2011 are being reviewed with indications that we will have a separate function in 2011. The future of the function depends on support from players and clubs as without this support the prestige and value of the function is open to question.

MEDIA COVERAGE TELEVISION

TV coverage of BHL1 and BWHA Division 1 fixtures and finals by 31 Digital was continued in 2010. Conversion to digital by the former QCTV now provides improved coverage and picture quality at 31 Digital. It was pleasing to note that Hockey Queensland engaged 31 Digital to cover the AHL finals day which provided coverage of the top teams in Australia and some of the worlds best players in action on Brisbane TV. Thank you to all involved in organising and supporting the television coverage. Particular thanks to Col Morley, Tom Whetton and George Clutton who were our volunteer commentators across the season a big effort and we look forward to listening to your commentary and thoughts on the game in 2011.

COOPERATION WITH BWHA

Thank you to Karen Walduck and Kathleen Proctor for your cooperation across the season on behalf of BWHA. The management arrangements for Burringbar, television coverage and the joint medal dinner are examples of working together for the good of hockey in Brisbane. Securing the future of Burringbar for hockey would have been less certain without the strong cooperation between our associations. We value our growing relationship and look forward to working with you again in 2011.

NEWSPAPERS
The 2010 season also saw the continuation of the excellent work by Lee Oliver in having Brisbane hockey coverage in the local press. Once again, our strong appreciation to Lee for his good work, vision

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF POINTS CAP SYSTEM

This year saw the second year of operation of the Points Cap System. The Points Cap System aims to improve the BHA competition and development of Brisbane juniors by placing greater emphasis (and

reward) on clubs developing their own junior talent to a BHL1 standard and providing a platform to increase the standard of the Brisbane club competition to have a more consistent level of competitive matches. While the success of the Points Cap System will be seen in the longer term, it will continue to be reviewed to ensure that it is operating effectively. In this regard, a number of recommendations made by the Points Cap Committee were implemented for the 2010 season. There has been a reduction in the points totals for most clubs from the 2010 season due to having the one Premier league team in 2010, however, this will balance out from 2011 with the return of the second Premier League team.

Thank you to June Grant and the Junior Committee for their work in running the junior competition and to club delegates and club officials, both senior and junior, for your contribution to Brisbane hockey throughout 2010. Thanks also to: Kim Rendell for his support and efforts as General Secretary across the year. Particular thanks to Kim for the compilation of the Annual Report a major task each year. Mick Evans for his commitment, advice and enthusiasm as Regional Coaching Director and for pushing junior recruitment initiatives. Sam Brooks for his support and enthusiasm in the role of Hockey Development Officer. Importantly, to my fellow Board members thank you for you contributions across another busy season. The many hours of your time and your work to run the association for the benefit of Brisbane hockey players and supporters is appreciated. I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2011. Much has been achieved in 2010, however there much more remains to be done to improve our Association and hockey in Brisbane especially junior recruitment. As we look to 2011 there are many ways that you can contribute to the success of your Association. There are opportunities for all to contribute, from roles on the Board, as a member of a sub-committee or supporting the junior recruitment initiative to help grow our Association. Looking forward to working with you again in 2011.

JUNIOR RECRUITMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Success in improving junior recruitment is critical to the long term future of the Association we need more junior players to provide a solid base into the future. The continuing challenge for the Association is to improve our junior numbers which have seen a decline over the past few years. A new concept for Under 7 and 9s was developed and promoted for the 2010 season. Under 7 and 9s are now played on Friday night in two blocks to match school terms in an effort to attract more young players. Feedback indicates that the concept is popular and has seen some increase in numbers. But we still need to do more to attract young players to our ranks for the future of the game. Recruitment is a priority for the Association with support available to clubs through the Regional Coaching Director and Hockey Development Officer. The recruitment structure developed by the Regional Coaching Director provides for effective use of Association resources to support club recruitment. I ask all clubs to look at how they can work with the Association to attract and retain new young players. These young players will be the future BHL1 players in 10 to 15 years time.

Greg Swann
BHA President

COMPETITIONS
This year saw an increase in the number of turf teams to 51 teams competing in BHL1 to 5. While there has been some reduction in the numbers playing on grass, these additional turf teams and the continuing strong Vets competition has seen us maintain our player numbers. While the reduced numbers playing grass hockey is disappointing, the Association remains committed to offering a grass competition. In 2011, a midweek competition will be offered to provide a different competition time that may be attractive to players who cannot play on weekends. Given the success of other sports played during the week, this is designed for the Association to be open to the potential for attracting more players by offering competition away from the traditional weekend programs. Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and players of the finals. The finals series produced some good skilful hockey and exciting matches. In particular, well done to Commercial for their fifth straight BHL1 premiership success, an outstanding achievement and a record that will stand for some time. (Details of premiership winners, runners up and players of the finals are presented later in the report.) Thank you to all players for your participation in the 2010 BHA competitions.

GENERAL SECRETARY'S REPORT

To be presented at the Seventy-eighth Annual General Meeting of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at the State Hockey Centre, Monday 6th December 2010. Cr Newman, Mr Swann, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2010 Season. As 2010 draws to a close it is time to reflect on a busy year and to report on some of the detail. As many on the BHA Board of Management have submitted reports that are also contained within this booklet I shall try to avoid repeating details.

FIXTURES
Anecdotally there seemed to be a fair degree of satisfaction with the Senior Men's fixture draws this year despite the major interruption caused by the Men's Australian Hockey League Finals being held at the State Hockey Centre in the lead to the domestic finals series. This is a credit to Barry Bolton who returned to the BHA Board this year as Director of Competitions. The Junior fixture draws appeared to be more stable than in the previous year. These were largely the product of Sam Brooks in consultation with Barry and the BHA Junior Subcommittee. The BHA Veterans Sub-committee was responsible for the Veterans fixture draws which by and large appeared to go off without any serious hitches. The following table lists the relevant dates within each of the fixture competitions. For more details refer to the Director of Competitions report later in this booklet.

CONGRATULATIONS AND APPRECIATION

Congratulations to Eastern Suburbs on the opening of their new turf field which has helped cater for the increased number of turf teams and training. Well done to Easts for initiating and completing this major project. There has been much feedback from clubs that it is a good hockey venue that caters well for spectators and players.

Annual Report 2010

There is much more to producing quality fixture draws than is often noticed by members of the Association. For example there is data to be collected about the numbers of teams in each division; there are the sundry events that will inevitably interfere with scheduling; there are the integration issues involved with sharing venues, not only with BWHA but with schools and various other sports; and of course there are the various wish lists and requests from Clubs; not to mention the ongoing issues we all have with SportingPulse. There is a great deal of work done each year behind the scenes in order to produce fixture draws. For 2010 I wish to thank both Barry and Sam in particular for their efforts with the fixtures this year. The change from Saturday mornings to Friday nights and the adoption of school terms as a basis for scheduling our Under 7 and Under 9 competitions were well received. On the Northside the Under 7 and Under 9 competitions were held at Shaw Park in Term 2 and Finsbury Park in Term 3. On the Southside Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club hosted both terms on the new surface at Carina. With the support of the Clubs BHA hopes to see an increase in the activity on the Northside and an additional venue in use on the Southside in 2011. A big thank you goes to all of the volunteers who were involved in the running of these competitions from week to week. One of the disappointing aspects of these competitions is the insistence of many Clubs that their Under 7 and Under 9 players purchase a Club playing shirt when they register. This meant that while BHA supplied novelty t-shirts for the players included in the cost of registration, many parents and Clubs felt a need to keep their Under 7 and Under 9 players in Club shirts. It was noted that the BHA supplied shirts were a hit with the players of those Clubs and teams that did make use of them. What is required is some decision making on this matter followed by clear direction to the Clubs. Another important task related to fixtures is that of training rosters. Once again David Cole managed the Training Roster for BHA Clubs training at the SHC. This is an essential activity that ensures equity amongst those Clubs who train at the SHC. David is required to devote a significant amount of his time to this. I wish to thank David for a job well done.

take the form of a purely social night being devoid of any speeches and formality, i.e. something of a get together with a band or DJ, designed for socialising. This event might be best scheduled for Saturday night on a weekend when there are no senior fixtures. BWHA have indicated that they do not intend to organise a formal event in 2011 for the presentation of awards and medals. Instead they intend to hand them out at the respective Finals. At present your Association doesn't have any plans to cancel its formal event. To retain these events though will require a functioning players' committee to plan, organise and oversee such events into the future.

MEETINGS
The BHA Board of Management will have met on twenty-three (23) separate occasions by the time of the 2011 AGM. The first being held on 21st December 2009. The General Committee came together for General Committee Meetings (GCM's) on ten (10) occasions beginning with the first after the 2010 AGM on 7th December 2009. However at the GCM of 24th May 2010 there were insufficient numbers present for a quorum and the meeting proceeded as an informal discussion. Despite this meetings were well attended on the whole, though a few Clubs are noticeable by their continued absence. There is often a sense of irony coupled with a tinge of frustration when members of these very same Clubs complain about decisions and directions of the Association. This year the two BHA Corporate Planning Sessions were held 17 th October at the Northern Suburbs Clubhouse at Dorrington Park and 31st October at the Commercial Clubhouse at Finsbury Park. While both meetings were well attended with approximately thirty members attending each, many of the issues raised and discussed could just as easily be addressed at the regular GCM's. It can be seen as rather a time waster to consider such issues at meetings that are supposed to be for corporate planning. BHA is constitutionally bound to hold these meetings though perhaps it is time for the BHA Board and the General Committee to examine their relevance to the present day? Perhaps there are better alternatives to these processes? All Board of Management Meetings were held in the BHA Office at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie. The General Committee Meetings were held in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room next door to the BHA Office.

REPRESENTATIVE
BHA Representative Teams had a very successful year across the board in 2010. I wish to congratulate all players, Managers, Coaches and Selectors for their efforts. Peter Harten, the Director of Sporting Outcomes has given a fairly thorough report later in this booklet. The results are listed in the second half of the booklet, along with team photos where they were available. There is one point that has to be made though. It is the lack of commitment and follow through on the part of a small minority of our Representative Team managers. All too often BHA staff and volunteers have to chase playing shirts, balls and other equipment after the completion of Representative campaigns. Similar circumstances often arise with some managers neglecting to submit their reports. It becomes very difficult in those situations for the results and outcomes to be reported accurately in this booklet at the end of each year. I would like to urge those who take on the very necessary job of Representative Team Manager to follow through and complete all that is required of them.

STANDING COMMITTEES
During 2010 I was required to form a Judiciary Panel on seven (7) occasions. Messrs Philip Hack (UNI), Darren Cook (SWU), Kieren Powyer (UNI), and James Moloney (KWS) were the official members of the BHA Judiciary Committee. However, as is often the case, I called on several other members to serve on these Panels when one or more of the official members were unavailable. Others who served were: David Cole (SWU), George Economous (BUL), Simon Reynolds (POL), Thomas Mills (QUT) and Phillip Farlow (PRStA). I wish to thank them all for their time and commitment. The Appeals Committee was only required once this year. I wish to thank Todd Fuller (EAS), Mike Corlett (VAL), and Kieran Powyer (UNI) for their time and commitment to the process. The Judiciary outcomes were once again posted on the BHA Website under Admin. Many outcomes from previous years and links to download the Judiciary and Appeals Rules are also accessible from there. While this may provide some level of deterrent to prospective offenders, I believe that the main benefit is that it provides an understanding of the processes involved to players and officials alike. The various Representative Team Selection Committees performed well in 2010. With Team selections provided in a timely manner, it allows those responsible for arranging team training, accommodation and uniform distribution to do their jobs. It was not considered necessary to form a Grounds Committee for 2010.

BHA BEST & FAIREST MEDAL PRESENTATION DINNER

I wish to congratulate all winners. Please refer to the BHA Best & Fairest Medal section later in this booklet for details of all of the winners. This year's Medal presentation dinner was once again held jointly with BWHA. I wish to thank Annette Stouter of BWHA for huge amount effort she put into this event. It was largely through her efforts that the night went off without a hitch. As always there are wide ranging views regarding the Presentation Dinner and what it should be about. While the venue was a hit this year there were other aspects of the night that drew some criticism. The most common issue raised was the lack of a build up and ceremony that many expect should surround the presentation of the BHA Medal. This sentiment was expressed by both young and older members of our Association. At the same time many were happy with the socialising side of the event. Perhaps it's time to consider holding two separate events? One could be held for the formal counting and presentation of the Medal at season's end with a guest speaker but without any other entertainment. This could either be with or without BWHA. The other event could be a joint BHA/BWHA event held mid-season. It would

COMMUNICATIONS
The Association continues to use the Internet as its primary means of communication with its Clubs. The BHA Website (www.bha.org.au) is used to communicate documentation and forms, fixture draws, representative team announcements, match reports, meeting notices, general news, updates and much more to the Clubs and their members. Emails are used to advise Clubs and their Delegates directly of important matters and information. Susan Johnston, the Association's Bookkeeper also makes use of the Internet to directly

deposit payments to individuals for Umpiring and Technical Bench duties, and conversely to send invoices directly to Members and Clubs. While on the subject of the BHA Website, I would like to congratulate Lee Oliver on his having recently received the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award from Hockey Queensland. Lee received his award for his reporting of all things Hockey both in the newspapers and on the BHA Website. His recognition for this is well deserved. During the year I switched BHA from plain old ADSL to ADSL2+ and upgraded the internal wired network from 100Mb/s to 1,000Mb/s (Gigabit) and the wireless network from 802.11g (54Mb/s) to 802.11n (300Mb/s). This was found necessary due to the increasing use of online resources and media, particularly in the areas of coaching, document distribution and the promotion of our sport. The network is working much better than before and the increases in speed are clearly evident. During the year I was asked to source some replacement two-way units for use by the First Aid and Technical Assistants at SHC. As I believed that this would be unlikely to improve the ongoing problems that exist with the use of two-ways for this purpose, I suggested a better solution would be the use of a fixed line intercom. Consultation with Greg Gunner (HQ) and John Beale then followed and it was agreed that use could be made of the existing BHA telephone system. As a consequence John has now installed an extension handset in each of the two technical benches and an extension to one of the small offices on the end of the BHA Office building. This room is to serve as a First Aid room for normal Fixtures. Thanks go to both Hockey Queensland and John Beale for their efforts on this. As part of your Association's contribution to the management of the Burringbar Park Facility at Chermside, not only do two of BHA's Board also serve on the Board of BHMG (Greg Swann and Paul Saunders) but BHA's Bookkeeper, Susan Johnston is responsible for keeping the BHMG books and yours truly is responsible for the BHMG Website (www.brishockey.org.au). I can report that the BHMG Website contains the essentials of an online roster and query forms and it has been well received by its users Clubs, schools and Associations alike.

The Under 7 and Under 9 competitions began to show signs of improvement and rising levels of enthusiasm throughout 2010. This needs to be maintained at the very least. However, it is of paramount importance that all Clubs understand the need to work towards expanding the Under 7 and Under 9 competitions. They need to encompass more venues and perhaps try using Terms 1 and 4 as well. Any Club that does not find the necessary volunteers and actively recruit within these age groups will in the long run find their Club's numbers diminishing year by year it's that simple. On a similar note, Clubs have been asked to identify two or three schools (no more) in their area which they can target for some special attention and organise in-school and/or after-school programs. Once organised the Association has given an undertaking that wherever possible it will also provide assistance through the BHA RCD and the BHA HDO. That said, the Clubs will need to have a number of committed volunteers involved. While Clubs will be encouraged to still advertise at other schools in their area it has generally been agreed that a concentrated effort in just two or three schools will provide more tangible results.

CONCLUSION
In closing I wish to thank all who assist and contribute to the operation of the Association. It is the assistance and involvement of both volunteers and paid personnel alike that provides the means for this Association to function. I particularly wish to thank the BHA President, Greg Swann, and the Board of Directors, for their continuing efforts and their support. BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during the year. I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued support and understanding.

Kim Rendell
BHA General Secretary

BHA OFFICE
The BHA Office located at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie, continues as the centre of much of BHA's activity throughout the year. Mick Evans, BHA Regional Coaching Director is always busy with his various coaching responsibilities and when not in the Office will often be found performing his duties outside of normal business hours at various event and venues. Sam Brooks is the BHA Hockey Development Officer and is a frequent visitor to the Office though he is also often out and about attending to coaching and special events at schools and in parks. Sam has also done an excellent job this year with SportingPulse and compiling this year's Annual Report. Susan Johnston is generally in every Monday to attend to the Association's finance and to assist occasionally with other duties when required. I'd like to thank each of them for their contributions to the Association and the harmonious working environment that we have developed within the Office. I wish also to thank June Grant for her assistance with matters relating to the Junior divisions and Norm Ludwig for his assistance within the Office.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2011

2011 will see the replacement of the surface at Burringbar Park. As both BHA and BWHA will have invested heavily in this venue, members of both organisations can expect to see a greater emphasis placed on its usage. I think we can all look forward to some ral improvements at Burringbar Park. From 2011 the BHA Veterans competition will be known as the BHA Masters competition. Thirty-five to thirty-nine year olds will now be eligible to participate in the BHA Masters competitions. The Association and the Clubs will monitor this trial with a view to gauging any effects that this alteration to the qualifying age may have on other competitions. The BHA Masters Representative teams are set to adopt the newer BHA uniform in 2011. Up until now they have done well exhausting the remaining supplies of the old uniform however it is now time to move forward with the new.

Annual Report 2010

TREASURER'S REPORT
FINANCE
The audited 2009 - 2010 Financial Statements of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc., for the year ending 30 September 2010, are submitted to the member clubs and appear in this Annual Report. An extremely strong outcome for the financial year past, although the budget was extremely close in most areas, there were some fluctuations which contributed to the positive result. On the income side, through Sporting Pulse, additional registrations were identified, Turf Hire income was increased by more than 10% and a non-budgeted grant all contributed to a $42,000 increase. Savings were made against the budgeted expenses, most notably in Administration, Representative costs, Promotions & Marketing, Development costs and Turf hire, although one centre has now invoiced for a month that was overlooked. This will impact on the 2010-2011 profit and loss figures. Brisbane Hockey Association, in conjunction with Brisbane Womens Hockey Association, continued broadcasting BHL 1 games for both associations on QCTV, which upgraded mid-season to Digital technology, increasing their audience. Hockey Queensland also decided to record the AHL whilst in Brisbane, underlying the value which we see in this promotion of hockey to a wider audience. Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc, a BHA joint venture, has completed its first eighteen months of operation under the umbrella organisation and has established a sound financial footing. The replacement of the water based surface is slated for mid January 2011, although the exact funding mechanism is somewhat clouded with the second round of State Government Grants, being announced in the middle of January. It is anticipated that the surface will be of the highest quality and arguably the best surface in Brisbane. Sam Brooks undertook the entering and maintaining of Sporting Pulse and I must commend his commitment and dedication to the many hours of entering information into the system. The checking and compilation of the direct payments for First Aid, Umpires and Technical bench was thoroughly controlled by Norm Ludwig and I cannot thank him enough for managing this enormously time consuming task. We are indeed fortunate to have the expertise of Susan Johnston who, in the space of one very hectic day per week, manages to keep our accounting system under control, pay wages, bills and accounts and somehow unravel the accounts for Brisbane Hockey management Group as well. I am indebted to her cheerful, helpful disposition which added to her ultra professional abilities, makes the BHA accounts an easy task for the auditors. To Greg Swann who managed, liaised, cajoled and booked all of the representative requirements. An all consuming professional career really made his effort as President of BHA and chairman of Brisbane Hockey Management Group a herculean effort, but his humour and professional ability see him achieve the required outcomes. June Grant, for her always valued assistance, with monies collected from the junior divisions. To all clubs secretaries and treasurers, thank you for your voluntary time and efforts in continuing to manage and maintain the running of your clubs. The General Secretary and backstop of BHA is Kim Rendell. My appreciation and thanks for his assistance in dealing with account enquires, banking when required, organising to have cheques sometimes counter signed at short notice. To my fellow board members, for interesting, stimulating discussions and input at board level and your friendship away from the meetings.

The new hybrid surface of Eastern Suburbs Hockey facility at Carina came on line, in time for 2010 fixtures. The facilities available are highly commended and the club deserves much credit for the work undertaken and completed by a large band of volunteers, who were marshalled by their hard working executive. Redcliffes hybrid surface enters its third year and is utilised on a continuous basis. The club's plans for clubhouse and changing rooms are reliant on the support for the local council and presumably the Queensland state government. Burringbar Park, managed by Brisbane Hockey Management Group has selected a supplier for the replacement water based surface and in the new year, hopefully, there will be good news. A higher barrier net has been constructed at the car park end of the facility to contain mis-hit balls. Future plans include possible new dug outs, relocation of the technical bench, electronic scoreboard, decking and total ongoing refurbishment of a 10 year old facility. Congratulations to Northern Suburbs Hockey club, for the planning and laying of a one third size artificial training facility at their grounds. BHA would like to thank the clubs for the use of their grass fields, for junior and senior fixtures at Shaw Park and Newmarket, especially for the Friday night U/7 and U/9 programs, which were very successful ventures in growing junior numbers.

Paul Saunders
Director of Finance (Treasurer)

FACILITIES
The State Hockey Centre, with two water surfaces, is extensively used by BHA & BWHA. A new Plaza area, behind the grandstand is finally completed and new natural turf and gardens are on the opposite side, near the main car park and revitalised additional parking add to the appeal. The indoor swimming centre is also complete, offering another facet to the State Hockey centre precinct.

COMPETITIONS

Season 2010 presented a number of challenges due to the representative programme, depleting player numbers at several clubs and then the AHL finals series programmed at the State Hockey Centre during the normal BHL finals period. Fixtures were suspended over the AHL finals period, except for BHL5, so no club with Queensland Blades players was penalised and every club was able to field their best side for the finals. With the new Easts Hockey Tiger turf at Carina being available for Round 3 of fixtures, after Easter, programming of games became easier. Working together with BWHA fixtures were completed for the normal season, taking into account venue availability, TV games, representative commitments, home and away preferences. The majority of the season saw last games at 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Following release of the season fixtures, some minor adjustments were necessary, after consultation with the clubs affected, which resulted in a fair draw for all clubs. Fixtures ran smoothly throughout the season, although some minor reprogramming was necessary during the finals due to TV commitments. My appreciation to Paul Saunders for his liaison with QCTV for the bi-weekly coverage of the BHL1 competition. I would like to compliment the umpires association for their constructive efforts and initiatives throughout the season, which was well received by the clubs. A high standard of umpiring was maintained during the finals series with many quality games. The new direction in umpiring should be supported by all involved in the competition. Thanks to the BHA board and clubs for their support and co-operation throughout the season making my position most enjoyable. My gratitude to Sam Brooks for his assistance and expertise in programming all the fixtures on Sporting Pulse and to Kim Rendell for his ongoing support.

I would also like to again thank Sonya Taylor and Karen Argent for their continued work in getting all the players and supporters fitted out in the Brisbane gear. Often a task taken for granted that takes many hours to complete. Once again our selectors have done a sterling job of spending their time to select the best teams they can and from the results you can only suggest they have done an admirable job in an often thankless task. Thank you also to the managers and coaches who give up their holidays and family time to be able to help our players become better players and to ensure they enjoy their experience playing hockey for Brisbane. Finally Id like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to the parents and players for making the commitment to be part of the Brisbane representative program. The program requirements, together with their own club commitment, make it a big ask but Im sure the players will have made improvements in their skill level as a result. As we look towards 2011, we hope that the Brisbane success level will get even better and that the changes instigated to the program are well accepted.

Whilst the introduction of the universally accepted Sportzware Central Sporting Pulse system to assist with the management of our Competitions in 2009 provided many benefits there are still some anomalies that require further clarification. Not the least of these is the need to provide ready access to our Office Operators by the early submission of all official documentation [viz. duly completed Team Sheets]. The information required for the various follow up actions is contained in these very important documents and the sooner they are received in the Office the quicker any subsequent enquiries can be attended to by the relevant officials. Hockey is a genuine team sport and for our Association to grow it is incumbent on all of us to share in the workload associated therewith. An essential component of team work is the need for Clubs to take ownership of our sport and requires an earnest application of the relevant Codes of Conduct/Ethics applicable to all participants in whatever role they adopt. In this vein it is timely to remember the duly approved and published BHA Mission Statement and associated Core Values stated herewith:Mission Statement Our Mission is to:

SPORTING O UTCOMES

What a terrific year for Brisbane representative teams!! Joint winners of Under 11 Coulter Shield, Under 13 (3) wins Division 2 State Championship, Under 15 (3) wins Division 2 State Championship, Under 18 (1) wins Division 1 State Championship, Brisbane (2) wins Open State Championship and gains elevation to Premier League for 2011 and Brisbane (1) wins Premier League. Outstanding results and congratulations to the selectors, coaches, managers and players for being a part of such a great year of success. Brisbane hockey is taking great strides towards returning to be the dominant team at all State Championships. Whilst there has been great success in 2010 this does not mean we rest on our laurels. In view of this, Mick Evans will review our entire representative program to identify what was done well, what wasnt and how can we improve it for next year. Having someone like Mick with his extensive experience and willingness to look outside the box to find ways to help our players get better is a great asset to have in Brisbane hockey. Im sure if you ask the players their feedback would only be positive with respect to their interactions with Mick. It is a very fine balance between the competing priorities of clubs, representative coaches, not burning a player out or making going to hockey a chore rather than a pleasure. All of us in Brisbane hockey must ensure that our main priority is that all our players enjoy playing hockey, at whatever level, and they never become disenchanted with the sport through them getting tired of going to hockey. There is no easy solution or silver bullet to the players being available for every club fixture and every representative game/training so it is up to us to develop the best solution. There is NO solution that means nobody has to give a bit. Sometimes its about taking a view of the bigger picture rather than what just suits me best whoever the me may be at any given time.

Provide opportunities for all players, umpires, administrators and officials to meet their full potential in the sport of hockey; and Achieve growth in participation in the sport of hockey in Brisbane; and Strengthen and then extend the base of hockey Clubs within our jurisdiction on a sustainable basis.

Our Core Values are: Our Association is built on three core values:

Healthy competition on the field; and Active co-operation off the field; and Mutual respect at all times.

In 2010 the Board adopted a specific set of Roles and Functions for the relevant areas of activity which were incorporated into the BHA web site for all to see. The clarification of these Functions and associated Activities was designed to facilitate increased participation by Club personnel in the Administration of our regular fixtures.

I firstly would like to thank all who voted me in. It has been a great experience and would like to continue on in years to come, giving back what others have given me, in my years playing under Brisbane Hockey Association. This year has seen a change in the way umpires were allocated and paid. With the help of Ian Smith and Allen Schasser, this was a big improvement on the system that was in place in the past. With the game moving forward and all other aspects as well, it was time BHA caught up with the the game. After looking at what umpires we have on hand, it was time we rewarded those who have gained Qld 21s and higher level. International Umpires include: Paul Ludwig, Adam Kearns, Ben De Young, Steve Rodgers. Australian Umpires include: Adam Barry, Duane Blake, David Crandell. Queensland 21s Level include: Michael Suthers, David Halliday. Also Richard Arthur for his continued service to the Umpires Assoc. This saw the Umpires form a Panel of 10 consisting of the gentlemen mentioned above. The Panel of 10 would be paid $50 for every BHL1 game umpired and $20 for every other game. The guys that were not in this Panel were paid $30 per BHL1 game and $20 for any other game umpired. This saw BHUA top umpires being able to umpire the 1st Division more often thus keeping the BHL1 Competition at a high level. I would like to thank Allen Schasser and Ian Smith for all their help over the year. I have thoroughly enjoyed my position on the Board and it wouldnt have been as easy without the help of these two gentlemen. I look forward to next year and improving from what has been achieved this year.

Brisbane 1 finished third, Brisbane 2 finished sixth and Brisbane 3 won the Division 2 final. To our coaches Tom Whetton, Dushen Salecich and Sam Brooks, assistant coaches Ethan Triggell Caiser McMillan and Kris Maslowskyj, our sincere thanks for your efforts and to Managers Tony Hurley, Kerrieanne Stevenson and Debbie Huxley we thank you for your assistance in managing the teams.

STATE UNDER 15 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The State Under 15 Championships were held at Sunshine Coast from Monday 5th July to Friday 11th July. Each year a special medal is awarded to the "Best and Fairest Player" of BHL1. In order to establish a winner points are awarded in secret by the BHL1 Umpires throughout the Season. These points are then tallied and the results announced at a function at the end of the playing season. The 2010 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was awarded at a Presentation Dinner which was held jointly between BHA and BWHA at The Chifley (Lennons) on Saturday 21st August 2010. The Player of the Year and winner of the 2010 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was Eastern Suburbs player Jacob Whetton.

Due to the unavailability of spare timeslots in which to schedule the President's Trophy and Memorial Cup finals, they were not contested as separate matches in 2010. Therefore the Memorial Cup was awarded to the leading team at the conclusion of the first full round of fixtures, and the President's Trophy to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the second full round of fixtures, in each senior division.
