Enhanced Training Programs to Begin
North Central Missouri College in Trenton will be able to enhance its technical training programs due to its share of an $18 million U.S. Department of Labor training grant. The training grant, known as the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program, will be used to educate Missourians for careers in advanced manufacturing and public safety. It is called the MOManufacturingWINs grant program. Through this grant, students will earn skill certificates that are recognized and endorsed by the National Association of Manufacturers. These certificates show employers that workers have demonstrated skills in specific areas of manufacturing, such as production, industrial maintenance, welding, machining and transportation and logistics. NCMCs Dean of Instruction Dr. Jamie Hooyman expects NCMC to be awarded $876,314 as part of this three-year initiative. Specifically, the consortium colleges will align curriculum, degree programs, and assessments in one or more certification programs, using ACTs NCRC+ as a baseline assessment of workplace and college readiness, develop pathways such as articulation agreements and expansion of forcredit courses in support of certification attainment, commit to delivery of NAM endorsed certifications, and enter into partnerships to address local factors, such as developmental education success program and student internships. We will focus on three career clusters Production, Industrial Maintenance, and Welding. The technical training will take place at the Barton Farm Campus. Dr. Hooyman stated that NCMC expects to be able to employ at least one new full-time faculty member to teach in these fields of study. Jason Helton, NCMCs Coordinator for Federal Programs, will serve as the liaison between NCMC and area businesses/tech schools. He will also help the new instructor acclimate to the curriculum/grant. These funds will allow us further develop our Industrial Technology Department by enhancing our current courses as well as the development of new courses in our manufacturing and applied technology programs. Students as well as area business and industry employers will benefit from the incorporation of industryrecognized credentials and will be taught utilizing the latest technology in timeframes that better respond to industry needs. All of the new activities and goals associated with the MOManufacturing WINs initiative will build upon articulation agreements and partnerships already in place with our regional career and technical centers located in Bethany, Brookfield, Chillicothe, and Maryville, said Helton. These grant funds will also serve to enhance current programs, courses, and instruction recently implemented with the cooperation of Modine Manufacturing of Trenton, which has been a long-time industry partner with NCMC.

College Hosts Legislative Hearing

This is the first General Assembly meeting held in Grundy County, said Rep. Mike Lair
North Central Missouri College was the site of a Legislative Hearing by the Missouri Joint Committee on Education on Tuesday, September 25. This Joint Committee has fourteen members, seven from the Senate and seven from the House of Representatives. Chairing the meeting was Representative Mike Lair (Chillicothe), who stated that he believes this was the first General Assembly meeting held in Grundy County. The Committee, created by Missouri State Statute 160.254, is charged with the development of a comprehensive funding formula for Missouri public institutions of higher education. Rep. Lair said the primary Legislative Hearing objectives were to provide a rational basis for core funding, to support performance outcomes, and to support Missouris goals for higher education. Testifying before the committee in Trenton were Paul Wagner, Dr. Neil Nuttall, Dr. Troy Paino, and Dr. John Jasinski. Also in attendance were representatives from Missouri Western State University, the University of Central Missouri, and the Missouri Community College Association. Wagner, Deputy Commissioner of the Missouri Department of Higher Education, presented an overview of past efforts in the measurement of performance of Missouris higher education institutions. NCMC President Dr. Neil Nuttall, introduced by Zora Mulligan, Chief Executive Officer of the Missouri Community College Association, made remarks about the role that community colleges play in the state and their contributions to statewide higher education. Dr. Troy Paino, President of Truman State University, defended Trumans liberal arts emphasis in an era of technical focus and job creation. Finally, Dr. John Jasinski, President of Northwest Missouri State University, concluded the testimony with a discussion about the overall role of higher education in Missouri. The Joint Committee on Education will conduct two more hearings, one in Warrensburg at the University of Central Missouri and the other in Rolla at the University of Science and Technology.
