Citizens disaster prevention teams


These teams started as residents voluntary disaster prevention activity in July 1997 based on the experience of the Great Hanshin/Awaji Earthquake in 1995. With the slogan, nearest neighbors pay attention to and help each other, the teams are actively working to establish a community disaster prevention system by spreading and enhancing the fire/disaster prevention concept among citizens in close cooperation with fire services.

Major businesses in Kitakyusyu City have established the Association recognizing that disaster prevention is part of their corporate social responsibility. In addition to establishment of the disaster prevention system, the association is working to improve the maintenance of members disaster prevention facilities, etc. and also contributing to creation of a disaster free city through various disaster prevention events.

Kitakyusyu/Hakushima special disaster prevention area association Members of the association are specified establishments that store or handle large volumes of petroleum, pressured gas, etc. within a special disaster prevention area including the Kitakyusyu/Hakushima petrochemical complex. For joint consultation on disaster prevention in the special disaster prevention area and development of the voluntary disaster prevention system of the entire area, the association implements research, disaster prevention education and drills.

In fishing communities and isolated islands, men are often absent engaging in fishing, etc. Mostly consisting of women of such communities in Kitakyusyu, the self-defense fire brigades actively engage in early-stage fire fighting drills and fire prevention education, etc.

With the slogan of Start fire prevention from our home, the club that mostly consists of housewives is actively working for fire prevention in homes and communities by learning how to handle fire extinguishers and raising fire prevention awareness.

The club is working to spread and raise fire prevention awareness by helping young people learn knowledge on fire prevention in school and at home. They are actively involved in events such as community fire prevention parades and campaigns.

To ensure the safety of residents in the aging society, senior citizens take leadership in disaster prevention in the community and at home, forming this fire club based on their rich experience and knowledge.

The club aims to reduce fire caused by playing with fire by teaching small children adequate handling of fire and the work of fire fighting, while at the same time nurturing independence of mind and cooperativeness through the experience of social activities/communal life. The club actively participates in various disaster prevention events such as parades and also works to raise the fire prevention awareness of their guardians at home.
