From the Desk of the Head of School

IMPORTANT NOTES
Dear Parent: Your childs school day just got healthier! School lunches now include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain-rich foods; only fat-free or low-fat milk; right-size meals with portions designed for a childs age; and less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. The changes in school meals, the first in 15 years, are based on the latest nutritional guidelines. Here are some important facts about the new school meals: The new school lunch provides 1/3 of the average daily calorie needs for kids by age. Some highly active students, like athletes, may need more calories. Some schools may offer second helpings of fruits and vegetables. A second carton of milk may also be an option. Schools also may operate afterschool snack and supper programs. Students and/or sports teams can bring food from home. In practice, many students are being served the same amounts of protein as before under the new standards. Your child can learn good habits for life by making healthy food choices and getting proper exercise now. This year is a transition year as schools implement these new standards and work together with parents to ensure that every child in every community across America has access to healthy and nutritious meals. Encourage your child to try new foods and to eat the healthy food offered at school. Reinforce healthy eating by offering similar new foods at home. Both of my boys go to SCFCS. My youngest is in the 6th grade and my oldest is in 8th. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science - Liberal Arts Degree in Business Administration and went on to receive an MBA from University of Phoenix. My work history is extensive. I have enjoyed working as a temp, part-time and permanent employee in various industries and business environments. Most recently, after being laid off from a Contracts Specialist position of four years and a brief experience as an Assistant Office Manager at a local orthopedic office, my husband and I decided my time is best served at home as our children transition into their teenage years. I am very excited to have the opportunity to be more involved with their education and actively participate at SCFCS! Currently I serve as secretary for the S.A.C. and have been an active voting member for over a year now. I am punctual and have rarely missed a meeting. I am comfortable working with groups such as ours, since I have held a position on Boards for two local Chambers of Commerce. Through my work as a physician in the community, I have made many contacts with leaders and organizations and can promote SCFCS with these relationships. I am comfortable speaking in front of many people and think these qualities would be an asset to our committee. Education has always been a priority in my life. I hold a Bachelors Degree, a Masters Degree in Education, and a Medical License. I spent my college years working as a teacher for autistic preschoolers, developing lesson plans and school policy. I have served as a class mom multiple times for my son throughout elementary school. For several years, I have held a position on the Board of Directors for two of our local Chambers of Commerce. In 2005 was awarded Small Business Person of the Year for my clinic. Please consider me for this position, as I would truly love to work alongside others in helping SCFCS be the leader in education for our children. My daughter is currently a 9th grader and has been part of SCFCS since its inception. I am currently a member of the SAC and would like you to consider me for Chair. I am an Assistant Chief with Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) in charge of EMS Operations. SCFD has over 500 Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics and responds to over 45,000 calls per year of which 89% are EMS related. I have been a Paramedic for over 20 years and a Firefighter for 12. Prior to my promotion I was Chair of the SCFD EMS Peer Driven Quality Improvement Committee for 4 years. This committee was responsible for researching and recommending improvements to the department, much like what SAC does for SCFCS. I have a strong commitment to helping direct and improve the academic future of the students attending SCFCS. That commitment will be my focus if elected to Chair the School Advisory Council. I have one child who is in the ninth grade at SCFCS. I have been very involved in each school (private and public) he has attended over the years volunteering, chaperoning and assisting in any capacity I could while working full-time as an Accountant. My husband and I feel very blessed to have found SCFCS and believe it is a great opportunity for our child as well as all the students attending SCFCS. We feel we should take full advantage of the educational process which includes the PTO and SAC. Both of us attended SCF to obtain our Associates Degree and I went on to finish my Bachelors and fifth year at USF while working fulltime. We are very dedicated to higher learning and put ourselves through college and look forward to seeing our son graduate with his Associates from SCF. We also are very involved in other community activities. I will be attending the SAC meetings and would be able to assume the Secretary position if elected. I am the current Chair of SAC and have been since its first year with two children at SCFCS in 9th and 6th grades. I am a Division Supervisor at the State Attorneys Office for the 12th Judicial Circuit. I am very involved in SCFCS and I believe in the values and core principals of this school and its staff. I have a Masters in Business Administration and am currently working on my DBA. I am very active in the community as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and mentoring youth through my church. I have extensive background in research and organization and I have great ideas that I would love to continue sharing on the SAC committee. I would like to continue serving as a part of the SAC voting body to make decisions for all of our children to help make SCFCS what it needs to be for our future generation. My daughter is in the eighth grade at SCFCS and I have two children in elementary and high school. For the past three years I have volunteered to assist at the front desk, been an active PTO member and worked to help SCFCS whenever possible. I feel SCFCS is a great opportunity for the children of Manatee County and would like to serve on the SAC committee to support the goals of SCFCS. My wife and I are the parents of eight children, three of them SCFCS students. I am a firefighter/paramedic for West Manatee Fire Rescue and have lived in Bradenton for 32 years. I have served on the SAC for the past two years and have enjoyed watching our school grow. While SCFCS is currently one of the top middle schools in our county, there are always things that can be improved. I hope to be re-elected so we can continue to make our school outstanding. As a current member of SAC I would like to remain a voting member. My son is in the eighth grade and I have been active at SCFCS since his enrollment two years ago. As the PTO treasurer I feels this involvement provides continuity with fundraising and financial support as well as policy development to benefit SCFCS students.
