DIRECTORS NOTE: ANUPAMA is a drama close to my heart. The theme to be communicated is a challenging & interesting task.

The central conflict rests on the male domination prevailing in our society rooted in the property relation vs the growing consciousness of women for equality due to the rapid socialization in the realm of production system.As I have the privilege of being the playwright I knew what is to be communicated.I saw the plot construction woven on the status of three different categories of womens plight in the society.First is ANUPAMA a house wife of a middle class family who under the traditional thought lineage even leaves her job to remain as a lovely possession of her dear husband.Second there is Dr selina who inspite of being a self reliant woman facing problem to marry a hidu boy sidhartha thanks to the social religious stigma &custom.Last but not the least is kamali a divorcee woman from the working class whose relationship with a worker shows love in true colour.Dr selina can provide suggestion to PTST patient ANUPAMA but it is the real life of KAMALI that can transform her because it shows the future of man-woman relationship. To make my casts understand the thematic aspect I had to base my discussion on the seminal book FAMILY PRIVATE PROPERTY &ORIGIN OF STATE.They are to be helped in understading each of the characters conflicts as well as to make those round instead of flat I followed the Stanislavsky method of charater creation.A fusion of film and theatre is exploited to sort out the challenges posed by the script and also to make it attractive. Light is often used as the way of transition from one sequence to another .In respect of music I attempted to grab the psychological dimension .Shadow play is also exploited to be at par with the playwrights flouting of the unity of place.To present the subconscious stream of thought of ANUPAMA I used mask and sound effect and light effect.Remembering the two stages of sleep the first section is presented in realistic way and second section becomes symbolic.SAIKAT,husband of ANUPAMA is a character who inspite of knowing the need for equality succumbs to the tradition often subconsciously justifying his standpoint.That needs much understanding of his duality.On the other hand I intentionally presented kamali and ANAL,the worker in aplain easy manner as to me they represents the true manifestation of love that is not constrained by social custom or property relation.They are the representative of the society that has grown withi the womb of this moribund one.The costume designing and choice of colour is according to the mood of the situation.The stage is divided of basically 4 zones. IN the nursing home closed fishing nets are used as backdrop to suggest the caged status of the patient while in the chamber of session the net are opened.the scenes of KAMALI & ANAL are enacted in front middle to give prominence.All past comes into the middle-middle .
