Feature: End of an Era (2004 - 2012)

Marvel Comics concludes AVENGERS VS. X-MEN event this month which will ultimately integrate the X-Men into the larger Marvel Universe. Back in 2004 Brian Michael Bendis began his Avengers run which would bring the franchise back to prominence. Bendis began with breaking down the Avengers with AVENGERS: DISASSEMBLED which lead to the New Avengers title adding both Spider-Man and Wolverine to the roster. The villain at the time was the Scarlet Witch which put her into the center of another event called HOUSE OF M where the mutants of the Marvel Universe were decimated in 2005. Following the HOUSE OF M, the X-Men franchise went through the MESSIAH COMPLEX, MESSIAH WAR, and SECOND COMING, which added titles including the New Mutants, Uncanny X-Force, and Generation Hope. For 8 long years the franchises of both the Avengers and the X-Men had their own storylines which culminated with 2012s AVENGERS VS. X-MEN. Now as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative the Avengers and the X-Men form a new team: Uncanny Avengers.

COMIC ARTICLES
Comic Writers Bloc After a little over 12 issues Jim Lee has left the Justice League to another DC-related title. Rumors have been circulating that both writer Scott Snyder and Jim Lee will be teaming up for Superman: Man of Steel as the movie of the same name approaches next summer. Variant Covers, Deviant Behavior Variant comics were a hot topic as retailers charged over cover price for the first 30 days of a comics release. Retailers created opportunities of greed with this type of deviant behavior. The first comic with multiple covers was 1989s DC Comics Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight which was a sales success. Marvel Comics followed suit the following year with Spider-Man by Todd McFarlane in 1990 and again with Rob Liefelds X-Force, and Jim Lees X-Men. The encouraging sales only reinforced the fact that variant covers increased sales. Publishers get a boost for a particular comic which has a variant cover. Even second printings encourage collectors to complete their collections. However the multiple printings have also encouraged price gauging by retailers who want to hedge their variant covers with their regular sales. They will sell a variant comic with a price of $2.99 with 1:10 ratio for $29.99. The variant will cover the cost of the unsold comics without the variant putting the retailer into the black.

COMIC CRITIQUES DC Comics: New 52 Zero Omnibus HC

One year after the Flashpoint and the introduction of the New 52, DC Comics celebrates their one-year anniversary with Zero Month. Below are the top comics and a brief summary of their zero issues. The first week of Zero Month revealed the best Superman story to date, the arrival of a new Green Lantern, and the secret history of Stormwatch. The background of Earth 2 is expanded further as the Justice Society will become the greatest threat against Terry Sloan. Both Animal Man and Swamp Thing have given me reasons to pick up the books after reading their zero issues as well as Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire. The origin of Dial H is amazing and it works! These seem to be the strongest stories due to their one issue standalone tales. Action Comics #0 A boy steals Supermans cape to fight his mothers abusive boyfriend. The boy ends up being saved by Superman who stops a moving train from killing him. This is the best Superman story following the New 52 relaunch! The second part of the story introduces Erik Drekken. Animal Man #0 Anton Arcane kills the previous Animal Man leaving the Red to manufacture another Avatar and serving as an emissary until the new Avatar of the Red is born. Actor Buddy Baker believes he is given the powers of Animal Man through aliens however it is a ruse by the Red. The stage is set for Rotworld. Batwing #0 The adopted parents of Zavimbe suffer at the hands of Death Jack. Zavimbe begins his life as a vigilante which attracts Batman who offers him to become apart of Batman, Inc. Earth 2 #0 Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Terry Sloan battle the hordes of the Apokolips. However Sloan has other plans for our heroes and betrays them uses synthesized Kryptonite to drive Superman insane against Wonder Woman. Sloan destroys the nations which were enslaved by the Anti-Life Equation. G.I. Combat #0 The origins of the Unknown Soldier is examined however no explanation is given. The second half of the story features The War That Time Forgot. Overall this is sincerely the weakest of the New 52 Zero Month titles. Green Lantern #0 Simon Baz is selected to become the first Arab American Green Lantern. A known car theft mistakenly believed to be a terrorist after stealing a van full of explosives. Baz will be later selected to be apart of Steve Trevors team: Justice League of America.
