TO: Julio Trujillo, Mayors Bicycle Advisory Committee
FROM: Magen Dodge, Commander, Administrative Management Division
DATE: August 30, 2012
SUBJECT: Auto / Bicycle Accidents
Attached are the statistics you requested for auto / bicycle accidents from 2002 through
August 23, 2012. The statistics are summarized by day-of-week and hour and location.
Also included are bicycle citation violations and bicycle citation violations where there was
an accident. We cannot directly correlate auto / bicycle accidents with the citation issued at
the specific event.
SUMMARY

Auto / bicycle accidents have been on an increasing trend over the past 10 years. Year
to date auto/bicycle accidents have increased 13.2% over the 10 year average.
Over a ten year average 61% of the accidents occurred between noon and 7:00 pm.
The majority of auto/bicycle accidents occurred on weekdays.
Accidents in May and June in 2012 were significantly higher than the ten year average
for May and June.
In 2011 the top three neighborhoods for auto/bicycle accidents were Lincoln Park,
Capitol Hill and City Park West.
The top three neighborhoods from January through August 23, 2012 were Five Points,
Capitol Hill and Civic Center.
The majority of violations written for bicycle infractions were; bicycles subject to traffic
control devices and bicycles subject to traffic laws.
The highest violations for auto/bicycle citations were bicycles subject to traffic laws and
riding bicycles on sidewalks.
According to Traffic Engineering, motorists are at fault slightly over 50% of the time in
