WILDLIFE CLUBS OF KENYA AND THE CHANGIENI RASILIMALI FACILITY (Act!

Promoting conservation Of Coastal and Marine Resources: Through Community Participatory Approaches, for Sustainability and Improved Livelihoods.

Project contacts: May 2012 Project Background The forest sector plays vital roles in the livelihoods of the Kenyan population through the provision of invaluable forest related goods and services. Kenya forest are important for economic development, environmental services, social and cultural values. They are important for the conservation of biological diversity, regulation of water supplies, carbon sequestration and are a major habitat for wildlife. As important as they are, their sustainable development and management continues to be hampered by a number of factors including inadequate financial resources, increasing population pressure and poverty that exert pressure on the countrys forests resources. The coastal and marine areas are undergoing a rapid, often drastic transformation. These changes are detected as environmental, social and economic problems including land use and resource allocation conflicts, degradation of coastal ecosystems, depletion of commercial fisheries stocks, declining water quality from land based sources and impoverishment of coastal communities. There has been a lot of completion, over exploitation of marine resources around Malindi areas. There has been loss of species diversity affecting both fish and mangrove due to human activity

Project description Project Goals and Objectives. The overall goal of this project is to achieve sustainable conservation coastal forests and marine resources through capacity building and active participation of local people and promotion of improved quality of life. The project seeks to achieve this overall goal by targeting three main areas, which include, continued support of the already on going Mangrove conservation activities initiated through ReCoMap investment at Ngomeni area and Sabaki River estuary, advocate for sustainable harvesting of marine resources at Malindi and Ngomeni and empower communities to actively participate in green initiatives to improve their lives and enhance biodiversity conservation. Specifically, the intended objectives of this project are as follows: Objective 1: To advocate for marine resources sustainable exploitation and management of

Objective 2:To empower and promote active participation of the local people through capacity building and environmental decision making. Objective 3:To support and promote local conservation efforts for increase biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction. Project activities. Working objective 1: To advocate for sustainable exploitation and management of marine resources

Promote sustainable use of marine and coastal resources through demonstration on pilot projects on the same, for instance alternative beneficial uses of mangrove other than making charcoal. Assist the riparian communities in formation of Management committee and assist them prepare an action plan for sustainable use and management of the marine resources especially mangrove trees. Facilitation for the meeting of riparian management committee in the project implementation stages.

Train the committee on what they are supposed to be doing expected of them in the long run.

Help them make a guideline document which can help them on their daily operation. Engagement of the schools and the neighboring institutions in the sustainable utilization of the forest resources. Working objective 2: To empower and promote active participation of the local people through capacity building and environmental decision making. Support establishment of policies or programs that will facilitate efficient and equitable allocation of coastal and marine resources. Creating incentive for effective management and protection of coastal and marine environment. Identify area with environmental conflict and use appropriate mechanism for their resolution . Develop appropriate messages, targeting the public through the local media as a sensitization means. Promotion and / introduction of public forum where important public opinion can be captured and used in the implementation of the project. Establishment of partnership and networks that will facilitate adoption and sustainability of the project. Identify local conservation groups and train them on better, practical and sustainable ways of managing environmental resources. Assisting the groups in establishing viable and appropriate tree nurseries.

Board members and staff; Average organisation budget; Current/existing programme and durartion Project Mornitoring and Evaluation. Wildlife Clubs of Kenya shall develop a comprehensive mornitoring and Evakuation framenwork coveribng the life of the project. The M& E framework shall have the following elements: A logical framework analysis, programme mornitoring and evaluation, mornitoring and evealuation activities, the programme evaluation and analytical plan, programme specifica indicators and mornitoring tools.

Project Sustainabilty The youth groups and CBOs that will be trained and participating in the project will be required to confine with the project tasks assigned to them after the completion of the project. They shouls be self sustaining once they are enged in the income generating actiovities established by the project through the sale of timber products from established forest, shrimps, fish and bee bee keeping activities. The trained members can continue with the tasks about management of marine resources, conservation activities and income generating activities through disseminating their newly acquired skills with others. Regular supervison and evaluation on sustainable management of marine resources and conservation of biodiversity by WCK and othe collaborating partners. The anticipated Moringa project is likely to attract more people into it.
