Presently a B-737 captain and can be found at 18.165Mhz or lower when duties allow. Equipment are two (2) Rockwell Collins Aviation HF radios, 400 watts PEP, antenna is in the leading edge of vertical stabilizer, with an auto tuner good from 2MHz to 29MHz I have only RF gain, Audio Gain, and frequency control in one kHz steps.no filters for strong signals within 3kHz of my working channel, no notch filters, DSP, etc.
Left hand photo above is my view through the HUD on a night landing on runway 17L at DFW. Middle photoshows the antenna on the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer. An auto tuner is connected to the base for 2-29Mhz contious coverage. Right hand photo above is the radio tuning display head, This one display head can control VHF1, VHF 2, VHF 3, HF 1, and HF 1 frequencies by pressing one of the six buttons. To tune a frequency, the large concentric knobs on the right are used, this changesthe frequency in the Standby window. Once on proper frequency, the frequency is transfered over to the Active window with the double sided arrow button inbetween the two frequency windows. The small knob on the left is the 'RF Gain', labled HF Sensitivity. I leave that on maximum all the time for its calibrated in ten steps from 0 to 100 ( the setting appears in the Standby window for few seconds after adjusting it) and is essentially useless.Lastly the black TEST button is for breaking the squelch manually on VHF1 thru 3. Also very active in RC electric aircraft. numerous foam motor gliders, park fliers, one large (10' wingspan) Bird of Time glider converted to motor glider.

When not at the "office", look for me on 18.165 Mhz chatting with my friend Ivor , G4YIT, and his crew when band conditions permit. Otherwise I can be found on 3.864+/- Mhz in afternoon/evenings, and 145.150 Mhz FM (W1WQM/R) anytime. My location can also found via APRS:
