Lens Lab
Objective: Identify practical uses for lenses by forming and measuring images.

Part I: Methods
1. Sketch a converging lens.

2. Compared to the location of the object, where will real images be formed by converging lenses?

3. Write the lens/mirror equation. Solve the lens/mirror equation for F, the focal length in simplest terms.

4. Derive an equation for image height that doesnt have M in it. Write the magnification equation (include the height AND distance variables). Solve the magnification equation for hi, the image height, in terms of ho, di, and do.

Part II: Determine Focal Length of Lens

Directions: Choose an object distance and measure the distance to the real image that forms behind the lens. Repeat. Compute the focal length (F).

do

di

What do you think I wanted you to learn from this? Or What does this mean? Or What pattern are you seeing? (write, draw, explain, whatever -- but most of all, seek meaning) What will happen to the image formed by an object increasingly far away? For example, consider these distances: 1 km, 100 km, 1010 km. Answer with mathematical proof.

Part III: Make Predictions & Collect Data

Directions: 1. Measure the height of the object and determine where you will place the object (do) for each of the 5 cases. Include a sketch of your setup of lens, object location, focal point (F), and center of curvature (C) in each case. 2. Predict (by calculating) where the image will form & its height. 3. Use the optics equipment to set up each case and measure the image distance & height. 4. Refer to the applications below this table to describe a real use of each case.

Case 2 (at C) do = ho =

Case 3 (between C and F) di = do = hi = ho =

di = hi =

Case 4 (at F) do = ho =

di = hi =

di = hi =

Case 5 (in front of F) do = ho =

Match each application with a Case: Movie projector Lighthouse

Camera lens Photocopy machine Magnifying glass

Part IV: Ray Diagrams vs Experimental Results

Directions: Recall the ray diagrams youve drawn for lenses and compare them to the results from this lab. 1. Do the ray diagrams agree with your observations in the data chart? Why or why not? 2. Based on your ray diagram, describe the image when the object is at the focal length. 3. Based on your ray diagrams, where would the object have to be to have the image size be the same as the object size? 4. Calculate the magnification of the image when your object is at the center (2F) and again when behind the center (using the object distance you chose in Part I). Does this match your ray diagram? Why or why not?

Part V: Design a Lens

Directions: Choose an application and decide on the characteristics of the lens youll use. Justify your decisions with the lens/mirror and magnification equations. Applications: Movie projector, Lighthouse, Camera lens, Photocopy machine, or Magnifying glass. You are the designer, so decide on the following image characteristics youll have: do = ___________________ ho = ___________________ What image height, hi, is required? hi = ___________________ Based on your choices, determine the magnification, image distance, and focal length required: M = ___________________ di = ___________________ F = ___________________ Select a lens from http://www.edmundoptics.com/.
