Thesis exploring the notion that teaching thinking is important but extremely complex. This research suggests that if teaching thinking for understanding is the desired outcome then a suitable institutional culture must exist supported by a programme that provides opportunities to develop these skills. However, without rigorous teacher understanding of all these elements and willingness to engage in this pedagogy, thinking for understanding within inquiry cannot truly exist.
