We want to participate faithfully in the life of the broader SPO community. This may include attending the SPO Formation Program Courses and Prayer Meetings, meeting with a Mens or Womens Small Group, going on retreats together or other SPO activities. We want to handle our relationships with the opposite sex in a good, healthy way. We are committed to handling our relationships as men and women with wisdom and integrity. This includes engaging in romantic relationships according to SPOs pastoral approach. As one expression of this, our Households will have a curfew for visitors of the opposite sex. We want to honor the Lords Day together in our Households. One expression of this is celebrating the Lords Day in our households according to the SPO tradition. This will include dinner and some time for fellowship. We will each participate in the meal preparation, Lords Day preparation, and/or cleaning after the meal through a regular rotation. Frequency of Household or SPO Lords Day Celebrations will vary.

5.
STEWARDSHIP 6. We want to keep our Households in good order. We are each responsible for assigned chores. We will not modify the Household, either inside or outside, by painting, building, sawing, digging, hanging, nailing, or similar, without prior written permission from an SPO senior staff member. We want to contribute to Household expenses. We will contribute to the cost of Household operating expenses and do this in a timely manner according to our agreements.
7.
PRAYER & FORMATION 8. We want to participate actively and faithfully in Household Prayer and make daily personal prayer a priority. Household Prayer includes the Liturgy of the Hours, praise and worship, and personal prayer. We want to live a life of accountability. We will keep the commitments we have chosen to make and act in such a manner as to be above reproach. We will live our life in the light and be open to have others speak into our life. We want to honor and respect the service of our Household Leaders. commissioned to serve the unity of each Household. SERVING AND BEING ON MISSION TOGETHER 10. We want to grow in selfless love. We do this by responding to the many opportunities to serve each other each day, even when it is inconvenient. We want to be disciples on Mission together. We do this by opening our lives and our Households to be places where others can come in contact with Christ and the life of the Church. We also do this by personally reaching out to others with the love of Christ in our places of study and work. Household Leaders are

* per law any individual providing alcohol to an underage individual can be held responsible for the damage that individual causes
2. MINORS IN HOUSEHOLD Because of the significant liability involved, SPO abides by the following policy surrounding minors (those under 18) and Household: 1. 2. 3. Minors are not allowed to live in Household. Minors are not allowed to stay overnight in Household. This policy includes any Households that are not rented directly by SPO.
Minors are allowed as non-overnight guests in Household, provided they follow the standard curfew hours set for minors, namely 10pm. Minors who have a sibling of the same sex in household may stay overnight, provided the minor and the minors guardians/parents complete the Permission Form for Overnight Household Visitation of Siblings. On rare occasions, minors may be permitted to live in household provided they turn 18 shortly after moving into Household and parental waiver and permission forms have been obtained. 3. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Household members will not act in such a manner as to cause discomfort or humiliation by communication of a sexual nature, sexually explicit language, or any unwelcome physical contact. 4. CONFIDENTIALITY Household members will uphold the confidential nature of the information shared with them by other Household participants, and will refrain from disclosing such information to those who have no need for, or right to, that information. 5. CATHOLICITY Household members will strive to live in accordance with the Catholic Faith, which includes, but is not limited to, conformity and agreement with teachings of the Catholic Church. 6. DAMAGES TO HOUSEHOLD PROPERTY SPO will issue Security Deposit Refunds approximately 6 weeks after Household Agreement expiration. To document and calculate need for withholding funds from Damage Deposit the SPO Property Coordinator will conduct two (2) assessments of Household properties and consult with Household Leaders and Chapter Directors beginning one (1) month prior to the end of current Household Program season.
1st Assessment: Property Coordinator will visit the property and assess whether there are any damages that still need to be addressed. At this time, a VERY detailed cleaning list will be given to the Household Leader/Steward to delegate amongst the household members. If the household members do not satisfactorily clean the property themselves, SPO will hire a cleaning crew. Any cleaning charges that are incurred will be taken out of all the members damage deposits. 2nd Assessment: Approximately three weeks following 1st Assessment, any damages and all cleaning responsibilities that were noted in the initial assessment will be inspected. A decision will be made with the Household leader as to what amount (if any) should be assessed from the security deposits. Any cleaning charges assessed from security deposits will be billed equally across all Household members, including staff, regardless of time and effort put into cleaning. The members of the Household are in it together. Note, however, that an individual may be individually assessed for damage that they, specifically, are responsible for. Household members are always expected to repair/replace damages for which they are responsible. It is preferred that these happen out of pocket from the Household member rather than SPO needing to do the work necessary to repair said damages.
INAPPROPRIATE CONDUCT
Recognizing that living in a Household carries with it responsibility for appropriate behavior, SPO will not tolerate inappropriate behavior as outlined above. Without excluding other grounds, any of the following may be considered grounds for disciplinary action or removal from Household premises: Misusing, destroying, or damaging any Household property or property belonging to individual Household Members. NOTE: Household Members will be held financially responsible for such damage; Engaging in behavior designed to create discord among Household Members, or willfully withholding Household participation, or encouraging others to engage in such behavior; Any emotional, physical, and/or medical condition that creates discord among Household Members, results in an inability to live out Household commitments, or places an undue stress on Household life; Any immoral, disorderly, or indecent conduct toward another Household Member and/or SPO participant, including the use of abusive, profane, or threatening language; Lying or falsifying reasons for absence at, or tardiness to, Household commitments; Lack of satisfactory participation in Household commitments; Being intoxicated, or using or possessing illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia on Household premises or on any grounds used for SPO events; Alcohol and other substance abuse; Any acts of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, and/or sexual harassment; Engaging in slander, gossip, or spreading rumors regarding other Household Members, the Catholic Church, SPO participants, or Saint Pauls Outreach in general.
INVESTIGATIVE ACTION
If a Household Member is accused of inappropriate behavior, it is the policy of SPO to investigate all accusations of wrongdoing. All investigations will be dealt with according to the following standards: All facts will be carefully reviewed by the Household Supervisor and if necessary the SPO Executive Director. The Household Member will be given full opportunity to explain his/her conduct before any decision is reached; In the case of alleged serious misconduct, the Household Member will face an immediate 3-5 day removal, pending a proper investigation;
If an accusation is established to the satisfaction of SPO, either a warning or a discharge will be issued from the Executive Director. For a warning, the Household Member will have a probation period, and will need to show the necessary improvement or change. A removal will take effect immediately; the Household Member must leave the Household, return all Household property, and remove all of their personal belongings from the premises.

The Saint Paul's Outreach Household Program is an experience which allows young adults to live in an explicitly Christian environment patterned after the life and teaching of the Catholic Church. It is a place where Christians can continue to receive formation and grow in Christian discipleship and community living. At its heart are common meals and prayer times, chores, celebrations, small groups, prayer meetings, and inviting other students to share our life and faith. Each SPO Household is lead by a Household Leader, usually one of SPOs staff or senior students. You can find out more about this SPO program online at http://www.spoweb.org/connect/household. For your information, an overview of SPOs Mission, Core Values, and the Ideals and Practices of Household Life are copied on the last two pages of this document. Due to the nature of our life, a careful assessment of this applicants strengths and weaknesses is critical to the application process. Thank you so much for your time and effort in giving us an honest representation of your impression of this candidate. We may contact you in the future for more information. 10) A couple things to remember: a. b. You win people to household before the interview, not during it i.e. the household interview needs to be transparent and people need to know what they are committing to; There may be different types of houses (Dorm HH, Formative HH, Mission HH, more relaxed HH) - be sure to know what the likely options are before you conduct the interview (generally discussed at Senior Leadership Meetings) and keep those in mind to make a recommendation concerning the candidate; Most of the questions pertain to all Christian denominations. However, if the applicant is nonCatholic, please review the questions in I. c. Catholic Teaching and Practice. Explain in particular areas that are Catholic-practice only (i.e. the Eucharist and Reconciliation). Please note any questions or concerns. Also note that the Supervisor of the Household can grant exceptions for Household Members who are not Catholic especially with regard to liturgical practices.
c.
11) If you have any questions, contact the Recruiting Administrator before conducting the interview. 12) Be sure to know before the interview how the application process will work after the interview (timeline, contact person, what to tell the applicant, etc.). Applicants are notified of our decision on March 31. The NO Recruiting Administrator communicates the decision. 13) Print out the interview form and write on it during the interview or type in the document (especially if you are conducting a phone interview). That is what the grey fields are for. Your purpose during the interview is mainly to gather data. Judgments and decisions come later! 14) Also print out the SPO HH IDEALS & PRACTICES AND GENERAL CONDUCT POLICY 2013-2014, and SPO HH Requirements 2013-2014 documents (attached to the email you received about the interview), so that you can go through it with the applicant during the interview. 15) For SPOs Alcohol Policy, refer to the last page of this guideline.
28
DURING THE INTERVIEW: 1) During the interview, go through the interview questions as well as any additional questions/ concerns you might have. 2) Please DO NOT skip questions even if you think you know the answer the applicant will give. You may not. Besides, the point of the interview is to gather objective information. 3) Explain the mission of SPO and Household, values, Ideals & Practices, and standards of conduct as explained in the HH Ideals & Practices and General Conduct Policy document, which was sent to the applicant with the email notifying them of the interview. Please go through all the Ideals & Practices, especially noting: Life Together o o o o Household Members may or may not have their own rooms Household common meals (For details, see the SPO HH Requirements document. Be sure to go into detail! Plan your classes around that) (if applicable) Mens and Womens Groups meet every other week as part of the formation program. Also address other elements of the HH/SPO overall program Relationships with opposite sex: one question in the interview asks the applicants opinion and standards about dating and courtship. We are not asking Household Members to set aside romantic relationships with members of other households. Although we recommend setting aside romantic relationships for the duration of living in SPO Household, we want to win them to that approach because: In general, we want to handle our relationships with the opposite sex well; Living in an SPO Household is a special season to grow in love and service to the Lord, and to grow in our identity as Christian men and women; It is good to take some time to focus on just growing in our identity as Christian men and women; It allows for an increased availability to serve God and to serve others; One of our main goals is to build community among our households. Consequently, we want to invest in community building rather than exclusive relationships;
The men and women in relationships are strongly encouraged to engage in romantic relationships according to SPOs pastoral approach by: Talking to their Household Leaders or Pastoral Leaders; Waiting until ready (generally a freshman in college wont have the financial stability, etc. to commit to a relationship that will lead to marriage in the foreseeable future).
Prayer and Formation o Morning prayer: Liturgy of the Hours and charismatic praise and worship (3-4 times a week for about 30 min, followed by personal prayer for 30 min. Morning prayer could be as early as 6am.) (If this is part of your chapters household commitments, make sure it is clear in the interview as it constitutes a significant time commitment.) Participation in the SPO Formation program (courses every other week on Thursday nights from 7:30-8:30 pm, prayer meetings every other week on Thursday nights from 8:30-9:30 pm, meeting with a pastoral leader 2-3 times per semester, meeting with small groups)
29
o o
Regular Sacraments Having a Household Leader (note that in case of conflicts with the Household Leaders, the members can talk to the Household Supervisor)
Serving and Being on Mission Together o o Active in life and mission of SPO to bring Catholic Faith Alive on Campus Participation in mens/ womens nights which are usually Monday nights every other week from 7:30 9:00 pm and Outreach Prayer meetings/ SPOken nights on Monday nights every other week from 7:30 9 pm Being inviting and welcoming to others

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT): The preferred method of payment is Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). We ask accepted members to complete an HH ACH Authorization Agreement and send in a voided check with the account information. o o o If EFT is not a viable method of payment, they need to contact the Financial Assistant to make other arrangements; If account information changes for the monthly payment, they also need to contact the Financial Assistant; EFT makes payments easier for members, and avoids forgetfulness and late fees.
If a Household Member cannot make a particular months fee, then SPO reserves the right to increase the months fee according to the number of days that the fee is delayed. Members are also responsible for any bank fees incurred by SPO for insufficient funds. SPO reserves the right to decrease a particular Members monthly fee in light of circumstances, either for a particular period of time, or on a one time basis. Security deposit: amount of 1 months contribution (due with acceptance) As of last year, SPO implemented a more established policy and procedure for assessing and paying for damages of HH property. See the General Conduct Policy for more information. o o SPO will issue Security Deposit Refunds approximately 6 weeks after Household Lease expiration. To document and calculate the need to withhold funds from the Security Deposits, the SPO Property Manager will conduct two (2) assessments of Household properties and consult with Household Leaders and Chapter Directors beginning one (1) month prior to the end of current Household Program season. 1st Assessment: Property Manager will visit the household and assess whether there are any damages that still need to be addressed. At this time, a VERY detailed list of cleaning tasks will be given to the HH Leader/Steward to delegate amongst the house members. If the Household members do not satisfactorily clean the property themselves, SPO will hire a cleaning crew and any cleaning charges that are incurred will be taken out of all the members Security Deposits.
30
2nd Assessment: Approximately three weeks following the 1st Assessment, any damages and all cleaning responsibilities that were noted in the initial assessment will be inspected. A decision will be made with the Household Leader as to what amount (if any) should be deducted from the Security Deposits. Any cleaning charges will be deducted from Security Deposits and will be billed equally across all household members, including staff, regardless of time and effort put into cleaning. The members of the Household are in it together. Note, however, that an individual may be individually assessed for damage that he/she, specifically, are responsible for. Household Members are always expected to repair/replace damages for which they are responsible. It is preferred that these repairs happen out of pocket from the Household member rather than SPO needing to do the work necessary to repair said damages. 5) Explain the Alcohol Policy 6) Explain how the process will continue after the interview (The National Recruiting Administrator will notify applicant of our decision on March 31, unless other arrangements have been made). 7) There are a couple of things that need to be read to the applicant. Please do so during the interview. 8) There is space for your own reflections and observations at the end of your notes. The interview is meant for data collection. Judgments and recommendations should happen only after the interview when you have all the information.
31
AFTER THE INTERVIEW: 1) Take some time right after the interview to write down initial thoughts about interviewee and complete any answers and observations. A couple questions to ask yourself are: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. Is he/she friendly? Is he/she relatively normal? Is he/she flexible? Is he/she teachable? m. Does he/she catch the vision? n. o. Would you want to live with him/her? Would you want to have him/her in a HH youre leading?
2) Save word document as follows: LASTNAME FIRSTNAME HH Int MN 2013-2014 (e.g. SMITH JOE HH Int MN 2013-2014.doc), or make a copy for your own records if you used a printed version. 3) Discuss interview with mens or womens recruiting leaders (or leadership teams). Practical Application: The law states that: o there is to be no underage drinking anywhere; o any individual providing alcohol to an underage individual can be held responsible for the damage that individual causes. SPOs Alcohol Policy states that: o At SPO events and in evangelistic settings where some are under 21: There is to be no alcohol present. o In a house where all residents are 21 or older: Alcohol can be in the house; Alcohol can be consumed by all those over 21, at house functions, Lords Days, and other events where all guests are 21 or older. o In a house where some residents are under 21: There may be no alcohol at SPO events (evangelistic Lords Days, etc.) or house functions (Household dinners, Household Lords Days, etc.); Those over 21 can store alcohol in public places in the house (e.g. in a refrigerator) if they label it with their names. Alcohol must be labeled with an individuals name to prove that the alcohol belongs to someone of legal drinking age and thereby protecting SPO from liability*. o In a house where all residents are under 21: There is to be no alcohol whatsoever, not even for Lords Day cups. SPO Recommends that: o In a house where some residents are under 21: When drinking alcohol in the presence of those under 21, be mindful and respectful of the fact that they cannot drink alcohol; Alcohol can be present for passing the cup at Lords Day celebrations; Private consumption of alcohol is permitted to those over 21 outside of SPO events and Household functions. o In evangelistic settings where some residents are under 21 (households, retreat centers, etc.): It is permissible to use wine for the Lords Day cup; When those of legal age are drinking alcohol, they are to be mindful and respectful of the fact that those under 21 cannot drink alcohol.
*This does not include drinking alcohol at special ceremonial functions like Lords Day opening celebrations when the cup is passed. ** Per law, anyone providing alcohol to an underage individual can be held responsible for the damage that individual causes. This is a liability for SPO.

They will make decisions concerning the well being of the Household, which you may or may not agree with. For example, your Household has not been able to spend very much time together recently. During dinner you talk about some things you could all do together to foster relationships. You would like to have a brunch together after Mass (or other example). Other household members have different ideas. After hearing everyone, the Household Leader decides you will all go hiking together on a Saturday morning. You dont like hiking and you would rather sleep in. Tell me about a similar experience in your life.
2.
The Household Leader may encourage you in an area of the Christian life that you might be struggling with, especially if it negatively affects the Household. For example, maybe

However, your roommate always goes to bed one hour before you. This means he/ she wants to switch the light off. Tell me about a similar experience in your life.
